A self - contained spacious one bedroom flat in a 100 year old Grade A listed historic building beside Edinburgh Castle, one of the best addresses in Edinburgh. You have a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with shower, double bedroom,TV and free wireless internet. From the flat you can walk to most of the main attractions of the City. The Castle is literally just next door. The Royal Mile is a lovely place to stroll, situated just 2 minutes from the front door. There is no parking at the flat but you will not need a car as shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment are all so accessible.
There is easy access on foot from Waverley Railway Station (10 mins walk). The direct bus from the Airport has it's final stop just outside the railway station, so this is also very convenient.
The flat is on the third floor (no lift/elevator) and from the living room is the best view in Edinburgh. You can see for miles!
Due to the age of the building there is some on going plaster works on the public stair, and a few small "quirks' inside the flat. However, none of this should detract from the enjoyment of staying in such a special place.
"Beside the Castle" came highly recommended through an acquaintance. I am so grateful for the recommendation because this place was amazing! I was close to everything in Edinburgh! One block to the Royal Mile another block to the Edinburgh Castle, and yet nestled away in the quaintest of quiet courtyards. I was staring out the windows day and night unable to believe that I had such a view of the city and the firth. The flat itself is spacious, beautifully furnished and supplied, and has a modern well-equipped (dishwasher and clothes washer/drier) kitchen. It should be noted that the flat is a walk up and not suited for someone with limited mobility.
Accueil sympathique.
The location and apartment were amazing! Literally steps away from the castle and old town. The views from the place were incredible and the apartment was very spacious and modern.
My husband and I had a fantastic time in Edinburgh and the highlight was staying at this apartment! We arrived early in the morning and were allowed to drop our bags off at the apartment after 11am while the lady was cleaning, which worked out brilliantly. The location cannot be beaten and the views are magical! Literally walking distance to absolutely everything Edinburgh has to offer. We didn't take a single taxi or bus other than the bus from the airport to city centre! The tub/shower is a little fidgety, but we were provided with instructions that helped us get it working. Only downers are the decor and furnishings are modest, it's up 3 flights of stairs, and the building is very old. However, Yvonne's our overall experience was simply wonderful. We ended up ordering takeaway multiple times simply so we could sit in front of the windows and enjoy the view! If we return to Edinburgh, we wouldn't want to stay anywhere else but here.
Excellent communication up front. Yvonne was quick to accept our request to stay at her place, and immediately forwarded me to the caretaker of this particular location who took care of the actual stay.
The neighborhood is great: it's literally the first building directly east of the castle and the view is spectacular. Be warned as the ascent to the apartment from the station where the bus from the airport drops you off is pretty steep, especially for people like us from the Netherlands who don't understand what a slope really is ;-). The apartment itself is on the 4th floor so you have to do the climb and then ascend a few flights of stairs. Winded at the top, but it's worth it, and a great workout!
Since the apartment is right next to the castle, basically everything you care about is not only within walking distance, but you can actually see it from the living room. It's right between the oldest parts of Edinburgh (where all the sights and cafés are) and the more modern city center where all the shops and public transport hubs are. It's kind of neat being able to look over at the castle from wherever you are and pointing out the apartment you're staying in, too.
During out stay one of the caretakers got in touch to ask if a handyman could stop by to fix a broken window handle. We of course agreed and upon our return one afternoon found that the window had been fixed. Very proactive and nice of them to reach out that way.
Some minor quibbles: since the apartment is obviously quite old, it doesn't keep heat in quite as well as you're used to at home, and initially the broken window handle mentioned above was causing the window to randomly blow open. The caretaker also indicated that the boiler was acting up and may break down randomly, and the shower and toilet might have trouble getting hot or flushing respectively because of "water pressure". None of these were issues during our stay and we accept that it's part of the experience but they're obviously things that can be improved :-)
Thanks Rahul for your detailed review. I do try to emphasise the climb (especially to the more senior visitors), but as you say it may not stand out well enough in the description. Usually after a few days most people acclimatise!
You are right about the various quirks and plumbing, I am assured by the professionals that this is to do with the height of the building above the water mains and not something that they can remedy, so we have just learned to live with it and hopefully these issues will not detract from anyone's enjoyment of the place. I am pleased all worked out for you in the end. kind regards Yvonne
We enjoyed the great location. It was so easy to get to all the major sites, in fact many of them are on the doorstep!
The apartment is a good size and was warm as a respite from the rather cool weather we had during our visit. We walked to the Sunday market in Stockbridge and had a lovely home cooked meal that night. The cheese shop over the road from the market was also fabulous.
Contact with Yvonne, John and Gill was great.
This is a great apartment in a wonderful location. It's big and attractive, close to all the sites, and if you are lucky enough to catch a clear sunny day in Edinburgh, the view is fantastic- all the way to the sea.
Also the man who met us was quick to get to us and friendly, even though our train was late and we arrived at the apartment almost an hour later than expected.
We've stayed at Ivonne's place for three days in March! it was awesome!!! When we arrived we were received by John who was an amazing host!! everything was perfect: apartment, location, City, host!! thank you so much for this amazing experience!!
You are not buying a stay in one bedroom flat here. You are buying a piece of history, enjoyment of an A grade listed building which was build at 1892, with stunning view.
Do you mind cranky boiler? I bet it has been replaced already by the time you are reading this. Do you mind climbing a hill every evening on your way back (if getting back from a new town)? I suppose Edinburgh is not quite for you then. I love the place. And I adore everything.
Everything was perfect. John and Gill were amazing hosts. Really, nothing much to say here. Perfect place to stay in Edinburgh. Period.
Really great location for a trip in Edinburgh. If you are lucky with the weather then the views from this place are amazing. You are so close to the Royal mile you don't even need to look at a map. Loved it!
