Situated on 165 acres, this century-old cottage is part of a working family farm complex that includes three historic homes, outbuildings, and local landmark 'big red barn.' The cottage is freestanding in a landscaped yard abutting fields growing alfalfa, wheat, and potatoes. A humble home with all of the basic comforts, it is a clean, light and bright respite in the countryside.

The space
Guests can walk right out the cottage door to the dirt and gravel roads that border the irrigation flume and canal - which make great walking paths. Though a fairly busy rural highway fronts the farm, walking these roads (only accessed by farmers and the ditch-rider) surrounded by fields, is a peaceful way to enjoy the farmland. This is a working farm, so depending on the season, you may see planting, irrigation, or harvesting operations.

Being on the Pacific Flyway, the Klamath Basin is a birder's paradise. You may see a bald eagle, barn owl, pelican, Canada goose, cormorant, pheasant, sandhill crane, red-tailed hawk, egret, dove, quail, turkey vulture, red-winged blackbird, robin, mallard duck, sparrow, or a magpie - to name a few. Deer also call this farm home and often wander through the farmyard.

You may also see and hear an F-15, as the Basin is home to the 173rd Fighter Wing of the Oregon National Guard. Nearby Kingsley Field trains pilots and supports combat operations. We often feel we get to experience admission-free airshows.

Guest access

Location

Klamath Falls, Oregon, United States

The farm is located in the Henley area, ten miles (20 minutes) from Klamath Falls city center. We are within 70 miles of Crater Lake National Park and within 40 miles of Lava Beds National Monument. Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge is a mere 18 miles away. Alongside two-lane Highway 39, we are "on the road to and from Reno" making it a convenient stop for thru-travelers.

Boundless outdoor recreation opportunities exist in the region including hunting, fishing, birding, boating, hiking, and cycling. An Arnold Palmer "sweet sixteen" signature golf course is within 20 miles, at the Running Y Ranch. The Favell Museum, a treasure trove of Native American artifacts and the Klamath County Museum, with logging and agricultural artifacts, are two excellent resources for area history.

Upper Klamath Lake and Lake of the Woods are both within 50 miles of the cottage. Upper Klamath Lake is a large, shallow freshwater lake used to support local agriculture. It's not ideal for swimming but very popular for sailing. Lake of the Woods is a beautiful mountain lake, optimal for watersports, and includes a historic resort with marina and lodge restaurant.

We are Charley and Nancy Thompson, retired from the vegetable seed business and teaching respectively, living on the family farm established by Charley's grandparents in 1920. We raised three daughters, and recently celebrated fifty years of marriage. Spending time with friends and family - which now includes six grandchildren, enjoying our lakeside cabin, community volunteer work, gardening, and rooting for the Oregon State Beavers are amongst our favorite pastimes.
