About This Listing
At the edge of the forest, surrounded by birds and giant tree ferns, our house makes an ideal base for birders - or to just kick back in a hammock on the porch. Bamboo beams, woven ceiling and black palm floors inside, with views over the treetops.
Two bedrooms with a queen-size bed in one, and three individual beds in the other. Open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area open out to terrace overlooking the garden and forests. There is an additional guest cottage which could accomodate a guide or other travelling companion.
Forest near house (and the view from the porch) provide great birdwatching. There is a walking trail through the forest - about 45 minutes - steep in places but beautiful.
Mindo is a gem, only two hours from Quito. The birding is world-class. Our house is at 1450 m, with beautiful views of the 19,000 ha Mindo Nambillo Protected forest. Many outdoor activities including waterfalls, forest walks, tubing, rafting, ziplines. Or you can just enjoy coffee on the porch and watch a steady procession of over a dozen hummingbirds feed at the feeders and flowers around the house. Mindo has some nice little restaurants and cafes, and basic groceries for cooking at home.
House is approximately 4 kms from the center of Mindo on a paved road. A car is convenient for getting around Mindo and the surrounding areas, but buses from Quito can drop you off on the doorstep. And we can suggest drivers in Mindo that can take you around as needed.
Other Things to Note
We have a caretaker and his family who live down the hill and are available to help orient you and help out. He also has two dogs which spend most of the time at his place, but sometimes wander up to say hi. They are mellow labs. Arrangements are possible with caretakers' wife for cleaning and laundry.
We are also happy to provide suggestions of things to do, places to see, guides to contact in the Mindo area.
Amazing place!! So beautiful. Otherworldly and relaxing. Beautiful walks around the house, amazing birds, bright and airy modern house, gorgeous grounds, extremely helpful care-takers, great kitchen, very comfortable bed, great natural history books in the house. The only problem we had was one night of mosquitos. The first two nights there were none. The third night it rained and we got devoured! Overall, highly recommended.
Thanks for sharing your appreciation for our home. We think it's a very special place too!
Sorry about the footwear and the dogs! We'll be sure to include this detail in the house manual.
We've never had problems with mosquitoes like you experienced. But will definitely look into getting some bed nets - just in case. Thanks for letting us know!
