Great for families or small groups, our cozy 2-bed apartment occupies the ground floor of a beautiful Edwardian-era red brick house in Ottawa's Centretown on a quiet residential street. Close to Chinatown & the Glebe. Be downtown in minutes!
Our house was built in 1904 on a street originally set aside for railway engineer's residences. Its character has been preserved over the years! :)
We live in the upstairs apartment with two small children and two cats, and have set aside the downstairs unit entirely for our guests to enjoy. It is fully furnished, and has hardwood floors on the ground level. Have a look at our floor plan sketch to get an idea of the layout.
The large south-facing living room features an old electric fireplace & mahogany mantlepiece, and a south-facing window looking out over the street. A great place to curl up and read a book, have friends over to chat, or pull out the laptop and get some work done. Note that we do not have a TV.
There are two bedrooms that will comfortably sleep 4 people.
The master bedroom (12' x 9.5') has two single beds that can be pulled together to form a king size bed for a couple to share.
The second bedroom (11' x 9.5') has a double bed that can comfortably sleep a couple.
The self-catering kitchen has brand new wooden countertops, slate floors, and a gas cooktop & oven. All the essential tools are available: fridge, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, cutlery, dishes & cups, and cookware. There's usually tea and coffee around, but please remember to bring your own food & drinks.
There is a back entrance with covered outside storage area that houses rubbish & recycling bins.
The 3-piece bathroom includes a bathtub / shower and dual-flush toilet.
We provide the basics (hand soap, toilet paper, hand towels and bath towels). Please remember to bring your own shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
The basement is unfinished (but clean), and houses the laundry room with a new washer & dryer. It also has tons of storage space for guests that stay around a bit longer.
Heat, cooling, water, electricity, gas & internet are all included.
Please note: the apartment does not include a TV.
Families with children: we can provide booster seat/highchair, travel cot, baby bath, potty, plates, cups and cutlery for the wee ones, safety gates and a variety of toys.
Guests have private access to the entire apartment:

Interaction with Guests
We live upstairs and are easily contactable when we're home. Of course, the keypad access on the front entrance means you don't have to speak to us if you're feeling shy ;-)
We live in a quiet & friendly neighbourhood at the edge of Centretown, in downtown Ottawa. Picturesque houses line the streets, preserving the beautiful Late Victorian & Edwardian era architecture of the area.
Here, we enjoy easy access to shops & restaurants (Chinatown and the Glebe are both within walking distance). We're also close to the Rideau Canal, which is a great place to go jogging, cycling, or skating in winter.
There are a lot of families with young children in the area. We have several small parks within a 5 minutes walk. McNabb has play structures and an outdoor wading pool, a great place to take the kids on a hot summer's day! Bigger parks are within walking / cycling distance.
As far as work goes, being in Centretown means we can get out to client meetings in minutes without a long commute! If you've got business in downtown Ottawa, this area is perfectly located.
Being in Centretown has its advantages! Walking is a great way of getting around, if you feel like stretching your legs you can get to:
* The Glebe (10 min)
* Chinatown (10 min)
* Parliament Hill (20 min)
* Byward Market (40 min)
* Dow's Lake (20 min)
* Ottawa University (30 min)
* Carleton University (30 min)
Bring your bike and cycle around Ottawa. We've got lots of cycle paths, and some beautiful spots to stop for a picnic along the Rideau Canal and the Ottawa River.
There are several OC Transpo bus stops within walking distance. Buses go direct to downtown, and Carleton University.
For inter-city travel, Ottawa Central Bus Station is a 5 minute walk around the corner.
Located just north of the 417, our apartment is 2 minutes from the highway, and easy to get to.
Gatineau Park is a 20 min drive away, and is a great place to visit. If you're around in September / October, be sure to take a peek when the leaves change colour... stunning!
Taxis are an affordable way of getting around Ottawa quickly & hassle-free. Blueline Taxi and Capital Taxi are well-respected companies.
The airport is a 20min drive away, and couldn't be easier: there's only 1 main road out of the airport, and it takes you right into our neighbourhood!
No smoking, please.
Please help us keep the place clean by tidying up after yourself. For longer stays (2+ weeks), take garbage & recycling out on Thursdays.
Please use shared internet responsibly (no illegal sites or activities).
We spent 2 weeks in this delightful space while waiting for a new grand baby to arrive! Nika and Steve were very kind as we tried to arrange the best time for our stay.
The photos and comments are 100%.
The apartment is very nicely located within walking distance to buses and some nice restaurants -Jax for breakfast!. The kitchen is very functional and our hosts kindly had coffee, tea and paper supplies to get us started.The beds were comfortable,towels numerous and the space was very clean and tranquil.
We truly enjoyed the kindness of Nika & Steve and our stay in Ottawa. We will return!
The best host I ever met in my entire life
I stayed for last 7 month with my wife and son, Nika & Steve showed us not only hospitality but friendship.
They treated us like neighbor not guest ( But I'm not saying they neglected the obligation as a host)
Location is good. you can reach downtown or big supermarket 20 minutes walk. Or you can easily get bus terminal if you want to visit other car ( or nearby there are a few rentcar store within 10 minutes walk)
I definitely stay again this housed if I have another chance to visit Ottawa
It was great - just as advertised. We had a lovely time, and were glad to be able to book at the last minute in an emergency situation for us. Roomy, well-equipped. Just what we needed. A-1 location and set up. Parking room in Ottawa is a plus too.
We had a fantastic time at the apartment. It was beautifully presented throughout and full of nice touches like coffee, books for all of us to read and adapters for UK plugs. Steve was quick to respond to messages and when we met Nika she was kind and helpful. The area was lovely, both quiet and central. Our boys both loved their room and none of us wanted to leave. We will certainly be recommending it to friends and family. Thanks Steve and Nika!
We were in Ottawa for 5 days and we were very pleased with the accommodations at Nika and Steve's. Nika met us and gave us info we needed for our stay (how to adjust air conditioning etc) and was very welcoming. The house was as advertised and was very clean and we felt at home during our stay. We were especially grateful that parking was included as we drove down and used our car to get around.
We would definitely recommend staying here if you go to Ottawa.
In our previous lives (ie. before we had our lovely little girls) we enjoyed travelling backpacking-style and were fortunate enough to be able to tour the world a couple of times. Our favourite moments from these travels include awkward misunderstandings in China, seemingly suicidal hiking trips in Taiwan, and the thrill of "catching a wave" in Hawaii.
These days we consider ourselves lucky if we survive a weekend of car-camping in the hills of nearby Gatineau Park, as this is all we seem to manage with two jobs, two kids, and two cats.
Our friends would probably describe us as easy-going, approachable, and a tad nuts, if in a good way. We can't really sit still, love tinkering around the house and socialising with our fantastic family, friends, and neighbours.
We both work in IT, like all sorts of (more or less) electronic music, and have been known to watch 5 episodes of Supernatural in a row on a school night.
Since we have always been exceptionally well received by locals and friends during our own travel adventures, we would like to return the favour by offering travellers to Ottawa the same warm, secure, and enjoyable welcome.
