About the historic neighborhood of Getsemani:

Getsemani is the most thriving area in Cartagena, the last authentic neighborhood in the old town and yet to be fully gentrified; it is the neighborhood where true “Cartageneros” still live. Getsemani boasts a unique bohemian atmosphere and a neighborhood feel you won’t find elsewhere in the City, mixing history and tradition with with an eclectic offer of trendy bars, restaurants and discos.

Casa Marta is located in front of the historic Iglesia de la Trinidad, the heart of Getsemani where locals and tourists meet and hang out every day.

It was at the Plaza de la Trinidad where Cartagena’s independence from Spain was declared on 11 November 1811; hence the “Getsemanisenses” are fierce people proud of their roots and heroic past. Getsemani is a place full of history and heritage.

Excerpt from Wallpaper Magazine (August, 2011 issue):

"Café Havana, the salsa club that has turned the 'lively' part of Cartagena's old town, Getsemani, from no-go to must-go in recent years"

  • My boyfriend and I had a great stay at Marta's house. We loved the location and she made us feel really welcome - just the right mix of leaving us to do our own thing but providing tips/recommendations when I asked for them in my sketchy Spanish!

  • Marta and her staff are wonderful hosts! If you stay at casa Marta you can really experience something special. It's like being home...
The house is set in the beautiful Barrio Getsemani and you can visit all the major Cartagena's attraction on foot. The rooms are very confortable and breakfast is simply lavish. You will immediately feel welcomed and pampered.

  • Marta' s casa was everything we had hoped for and much more! The room and bathroom were very nice, comfortable and very clean. Kitchen and common area are beautiful and inviting . The casa is in perfect location in the heart of the Getsemani district block away from the main plaza where we had great time hanging out , eating and people watching every evening/ the best part about our stay however was meeting and spending time with Marta. She was kind and very friendly making sure we were comfortable throughout our stay. Marta Is also a friend now, we enjoyed very much her company and are greatf for the opportunity we had to get such unique insight into Cartagena , it's culture and people from someone like Marta. Highly reccomend staying at her casa! Marta, thank you for everything and we miss you!

  • Casa Marta is Martas private home with two nice, large, clean, well-equipped rooms for guests. It is located in an ideal part of Getsemaní: just a short stroll from shops and restaurantsbut though in a quiet street. Marta is an extremely helpful, friendly person with a great sense of humour. She knows a lot about Cartagena and Colombia in general. Recommendable!

  • My travel partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Marta. We stayed here on our second visit to Cartagena on the way back to Bogota and I wish we would have stayed here longer. The beds were the largest and most comfortable of all five places we stayed in Colombia with many pillows and ultra soft and comfortable sheets.
The location of Casa Marta is prime with many up and coming bar and restaurant spots that are much more hip and relaxed than locations in the more popular streets of the walled city. Waking up in Getsemani was preferable since the neighborhood was quiet, relaxed and only blocks away from the haggling of street vendors in the center of the walled city.
The staff at Casa Marta is very helpful and accommodating especially Marta who arranged a taxi to the airport and sent us off with a warm hug. I would come back to Cartagena just to enjoy the relaxing stay at Casa Marta. Thank you Marta!

  • Staying at Casa Marta was great! She was able to easily direct us to the boats to purchase our tickets for our day trip to the islands and to the historical center which is very close to her house, walking distance actually. We felt very safe in her neighborhood during the day and night. Our room was spacious with ceiling fan and and great AC unit and fridge. Oh! and breakfast was delicious both mornings! Marta was truly a great host and if in town again we'd stay with her again. Thanks Marta!

  • Marta is a fantastic host. She picked me up at the airport, showed me around town the first night I arrived, helped me in organizing my further travel to and lodging in Barranquilla with her family there. And on top of this, as I was traveling alone, even put me in touch with friends of my age that took me out to great venues at night.

The facilities (especially the beds) are of very high quality, the breakfast superb. Location: about 5-10 minutes by foot to the most interesting sights of the old town.

Will definitely stay there, again. Marta has become more than a host to me, she has become a friend.

  • I stayed with a friend at Casa Marta for three nights and had a wonderful time. The rooms as well as the entire Bed & Breakfast are beautiful, super clean, well kept and the breakfast was delicious. The location is very convenient as well. But what made our stay so special was the owner Marta who took amazing care of us, was very helpful, showed us around and was just a great host - we immediately felt like being part of the family. It was hard leaving Cartagena and we'll definitely be back at Casa Marta as soon as possible!

  • Had a very good time in Marta's house. Before booking we were looking at different hostals but decided to go for this very small accomodation since we wanted to come closer to the real Cartagena-life. The experience went far above all expectations. Marta is just a wonderful host, very entusiastic and young in mind. As a little family with two small kids (aged two and five) this was far better than all the hotels and hostals we have been to before. Marta simply became a spare grandmother and we were taken care of as family members since we entered the door. The "downside" was that our kids didn't want to leave the house - they just wanted to stay with Marta...

We also found the area of Getsemani more interesting than the walled city since it gives a more "real life" feeling than the other very touristic area. Plaza Trinidad right by the church and by the footsteps at Casa Marta is full of good vibes and atmosphere. A place where everybody from old people to small kids gather at nights. Lots of small sales booths open in the evening selling different local specialities, empanadas and fresh juices. Just wish we could have been there longer than our two nights and three days.

  • Casa Marta lives up to the high starred reputation she has attracted. The accomodation is comfortable clean and homely but it is Marta and her nephews who make this experience 5 star. The location of Casa Mara is perfectly located to a plaza ful of great eating drinking people watching, full of locals young and old. If weare lucky emoughto return yo Cartagena we would love to stay tjerr again
