About the historic neighborhood of Getsemani:

Getsemani is the most thriving area in Cartagena, the last authentic neighborhood in the old town and yet to be fully gentrified; it is the neighborhood where true “Cartageneros” still live. Getsemani boasts a unique bohemian atmosphere and a neighborhood feel you won’t find elsewhere in the City, mixing history and tradition with with an eclectic offer of trendy bars, restaurants and discos.

Casa Marta is located in front of the historic Iglesia de la Trinidad, the heart of Getsemani where locals and tourists meet and hang out every day.

It was at the Plaza de la Trinidad where Cartagena’s independence from Spain was declared on 11 November 1811; hence the “Getsemanisenses” are fierce people proud of their roots and heroic past. Getsemani is a place full of history and heritage.

Excerpt from Wallpaper Magazine (August, 2011 issue):

"Café Havana, the salsa club that has turned the 'lively' part of Cartagena's old town, Getsemani, from no-go to must-go in recent years"

Casa Marta is absolutely wonderful. It looks exactly like the photos and the location is perfect - just around the corner from a bustling plaza in Getsemani, yet still quiet. Marta and her staff are so lovely, making you feel like a local and better yet, part of the family. Unfortunately we do not speak great Spanish but we found the language barrier to be not a problem - thanks Translate! The room was clean, comfortable, quiet and cool; the breakfast was delicious. They made sure we were in good hands - we felt so coddled - and gave excellent restaurant recommendations. We fell in love with Cartagena, a large part of which is due to our experience at Casa Marta, and we will definitely be back!

This is a very nice, friendly guesthouse tucked away in a prime location off of Plaza de Trinidad. Staff was very nice and accommodating, even offering to prepare me an alternative breakfast when I wasn't hungry one morning and didn't finish mine. They were always available to help with anything we might need in terms of transport as well.

Marta was a perfect host. We were greeted very warmly and given a lot of information about the city and where to go. The neighborhood was perfect in Getsemani within walking distance to Old Town and located just near the Plaza Trinidad where we had some local entertainment at night. The room was nice, complete with air conditioning, refrigerator and even amenities like soap and shampoo. We had to leave at a very early hour and we were even provided with a breakfast to go! What a pleasure it was to stay at Casa Marta!

Marta made us feel welcome immediately in her beautiful colonial home. The house is across a narrow street from la Iglesia de la Trinidad which has a plaza out front where people gather in the evenings, so there's a lot going on in the neighborhood. Neither Marta nor her employees speak English, so it's a help here to be able to speak at least some rudimentary spanish. When Marta introduced us to the neighborhood and the city though, she typed into a translator, so we had no difficulty understanding. Miguel and Albi were great helpers-- I can't say enough good about them. Every morning they served a lovely breakfast of fresh juice, fruit, coffee and another item unique to Colombian breakfasts. When we needed to find a grocery store Miguel walked us there and back, and again when we needed a bank he walked us there as well. The neighborhood is safe and eclectic, which is a combination we loved. It's a short walk to the walled city and only a 6,000 peso (about $2.20 U.S.) taxi ride to the ritzy area with the beaches. Our room had an overhead fan, separate air conditioner, fridge, walk-in closet and bathroom with shower and another overhead fan. it was cleaned every day with the sheets changed often, which if not done automatically is something to ask for in the stifling afternoon heat.

Great location in Getsemani, and a warm welcome from Marta and her family. The room had everything we needed, and was quiet and cool.

I am a retired lawyer and a proud native of Cartagena, the most beautiful city in the world! :-). I love meeting new people and showing them a bit of my culture and my wonderful city. Since I have the free time, I decided to open the house and welcome guests from the world over, share stories and learn from other cultures....traveling without moving!
