The Cottage is a charming Cape Cod-style home on Martha's Vineyard and has two B&B rooms available for single or double occupancy for minimum 2-night stay. Located between Edgartown and Vineyard Haven it is right on the main bus route and bike path connecting you to the ferry or the two town centers. The quiet neighborhood and completely private beautiful cottage garden offer a chance to relax in the hammock after a day of sight-seeing and the large deck is perfect for a glass of wine before going off to dinner or just hanging out, whether for breakfast or during the day and evening. It is minutes away from Sengekontacket Pond where you can launch your kayaks! It is a 15 minute bike ride to State Beach and Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Vineyard Haven and the State Forest are easily reachable along the beautiful bike path between my house and the towns, The main bus line runs right past my street! By late June, the gardens are up and blooming -- in 2012, a new butterfly bed has been added! The garden is designed as a haven for a variety of birds (including hummingbirds!) which you can enjoy watching from the deck or hammock. Each year, new additions are made to enhance its tranquillity and beauty. Fresh herbs are grown and used in breakfast dishes. Breakfast with guests is always a treat as interesting conversation spontaneously arises!
Wifi throughout the Cottage is available. Parking is readily available at my home.
Accommodations include TWO SUNNY ROOMS, a ground floor bed/bath with a queen-size bed ($110.00/night). The downstairs bed/bath have been refurbished and updated for guests! Maximum number of guests downstairs is two. The UPSTAIRS TWIN ROOM will accommodate a third person. The spacious upstairs room/twin beds/shared bath ($95.00/night) has a sunny bathroom which is lightly shared with me. A FULL BREAKFAST is included each morning which includes a variety of fruit, juice, homemade breads, specially prepared eggs if desired, and tea/coffee. THE COTTAGE WILL REMAIN OPEN THROUGH SEPTEMBER 10, 2014. IT WILL CLOSE FOR THE SEASON AFTER THIS DATE.
AND, I HOST IN VENICE, ITALY AS WELL!
The Cottage will close in September this year but come to visit me in Venice, Italy. My beautiful apartment has a comfortable twin room and a lightly shared wonderful newly renovated bathroom available from October 1, 2012. It is centrally located in the heart of the city close to all services and on the beautiful Fondamenta San Felice, close to the spectacular areas of the Miseracordia, Rialto, Ghetto and public transportation -- all within comfortable walking distance. Breakfast is included as at the Cottage (allowing of course, for an Italian twist!). Please visit the listing, "Spectacular Affordable Venice!" for further details and reviews.
You are welcomed to use the sitting room, deck and garden.
Interaction with Guests
Breakfast is the time when we can visit while I serve. I strive to give guests as much privacy as possible when they are in the Cottage.
The Line #1 runs right from the end of my street (a 5 minute walk to the stop!) connecting you directly to the towns of Edgartown, Vineyard Haven (and the Steamship Authority in Vineyard Haven). From both stops, you can connect to buses all of the island. Bike shops are numerous if you prefer to rent by the day or longer. Of course, if you prefer and make your ferry reservation in time, you can travel around by car. You can taxi from the airport, rent a car or take public transportation (transfer to Line #1 required). I'm about 10 minutes from the airport.
Must be over 22 years of age
Maximum 2 persons/room
Please! Don't think us difficult! The Cottage is going green. We do ask that guests help us by limiting shower-time to 10 minutes, especially as it is understandable that you might need to shower twice daily after the beach or other summer sports. Also, all wet items must be hung in the bathrooms or if you prefer, dry your personal towels and wet bathing suits in my clean, aerated basement that features a dehumidier. It molds easily here in an island environment. NO food or drinks (except of course, water!) are absolutely not permitted in guest rooms.
Please! Give me one or two days notice as to when you will be arriving so that I can be here to meet you. It is not recommended that you bike to the Cottage for the first time, from the ferry at night. The entire path is not lighted; buses and taxis do transport bikes -- two per bus on the front bike rack.
Nancy! She's the main reason we keep coming back to Martha's Vineyard. It's our fourth stay at her lovely quaint abode. We cannot get enough of her pleasant demeanor. She's fun and engaging. Luckily her daughter, Christina was there during our stay (we had a pleasure meeting her the first time around however she was away during our second and third visits). Additionally, her cute little furry canine pups, Alice and Baxter made us feel even more welcome.
People, if you spend 20 minutes with Nancy, you will feel as if you've known her as a dear friend of 20 years.
Great company. Nancy and other guests were very welcoming and easy to talk to. Very comfortable and LOVED the outdoor shower. Come and go as you please and the bus route is right at the end of the street. I do not recommend renting a scooter/moped.
Very comfortable, clean and safe place. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom which was very conveniently situated with a private bathroom right outside the door. There is no AC but leaving the bedroom door open made the room more airy and you can feel comfortable doing so. Nancy met all our needs and helped with directions. Her complimentary breakfast was excellent! Fresh fruit (kiwi, strawberries, blueberries and bananas), oatmeal, fresh baked muffins, vanilla yogurt and expresso coffee. It was a great deal for an affordable vacation!
Nan was lovely and received us on time with a wonderful smile. The room was nicely made and came with a few important (but understandable) house rules given that the accommodation is indeed a 'homestay' such as -
1) no drinks / food besides water in the bedroom,
2) do not apply sunblock in the bedroom,
3) [highly encouraged] outdoor shower usage (which was great / very much normal on Martha's Vineyard),
4) leave shoes at the door so as not to track sand / dirt inside, and
5) hang towels, swimsuits, etc. to dry on the lines in the basement / outdoors to reduce house humidity.
Nan was an incredibly personable host who has lots of interesting stories to share, which made breakfast conversation quite enlightening. It was also very nice that she offered some fresh fruit, yogurt, and cereal at 8:30am in the morning if you chose to join!
Transport was easy via bus. The Vineyard Transit Authority stops 2 blocks up the street from Nan's cottage and goes directly between Edgartown and Vineyard Haven, which makes it simple to catch other routes from these two major (website hidden), I definitely think that the stay was economical and worth the price! There are few options cheaper and as lovely on the island, so as long as you are comfortable with a homestay atmosphere, few house rules, and bus transportation (or bikes if you choose to rent), I think it's a great choice for you!!! :)
Meghan! Learned a lot in your 'short' course at breakfast that I have carried over into a discussion with a doctor at Yale ed as well. It's all connected and I'm so appreciated of your insight and Joe's as well. It was lovely to have had you both and I hope to see you again. I let Alberto know you would be studying and to look out for you. Best wishes and love to both of you! Nan
We had a fabulous time in Martha's Vineyard while staying at Nan's house. She greeted us upon arrival along with her sweet pups, Alice and Baxter. The room was just as described in the listing. It was quite comfortable and private right off the kitchen with it's own bathroom. There was plenty of room for our luggage, which we had plenty of since we were in town for a wedding! It was also conveniently located about 5 minutes from downtown Edgartown.
Breakfast was delicious each morning, as was the coffee. We enjoyed conversation around the breakfast table each morning with Nan and other travelers. It was also nice to be able to store food and beverages in the refrigerator even though we did not have full use of the kitchen. With the weather being beautiful during our stay, we took full advantage of the outdoor shower - just wonderful!
Overall a great experience. Would recommend to other travelers.
Andrea! Many thanks for your delightful review -- it is much appreciated. Since the website become more complicated (a current guest just told me -- she is a marketing expert -- that there are a lot of sections now to navigate. I guess that under 'amenities' it notes that there are fresh sheets and towels but this is a homestay and so, I religiously (of course!) provide fresh, ironed sheets when guests are coming in and fresh towels every two days. It would be impossible without staff and with work commitments to keep up with daily laundering, ironing and changing sheets so this is a simpler concept of staying 'at home.' If I failed to provide those fresh towels 3rd morning in, I do apologize! Unfortunately, because of the boundary blurring of professional and non-professional settings has created for some, expectations that are not a part of the settings that are chosen. But, I'm glad that for the rest of it, you were pleased! All best wishes. Nan
Thank you so much for hosting us! We had a great stay in Martha's Vineyard. You were a wonderful host, extremely welcoming and always reaching out to sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. We especially loved all the great conversations, your breakfast in the morning and that Italian Coffee, oh so good! Also the outdoor shower was amazing. Definitely will stay with you again when we return to the island. Thanks again for everything. We had a blast!
