The Cottage is a charming Cape Cod-style home on Martha's Vineyard and has two B&B rooms available for single or double occupancy for minimum 2-night stay. Located between Edgartown and Vineyard Haven it is right on the main bus route and bike path connecting you to the ferry or the two town centers. The quiet neighborhood and completely private beautiful cottage garden offer a chance to relax in the hammock after a day of sight-seeing and the large deck is perfect for a glass of wine before going off to dinner or just hanging out, whether for breakfast or during the day and evening. It is minutes away from Sengekontacket Pond where you can launch your kayaks! It is a 15 minute bike ride to State Beach and Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Vineyard Haven and the State Forest are easily reachable along the beautiful bike path between my house and the towns, The main bus line runs right past my street! By late June, the gardens are up and blooming -- in 2012, a new butterfly bed has been added! The garden is designed as a haven for a variety of birds (including hummingbirds!) which you can enjoy watching from the deck or hammock. Each year, new additions are made to enhance its tranquillity and beauty. Fresh herbs are grown and used in breakfast dishes. Breakfast with guests is always a treat as interesting conversation spontaneously arises!
Wifi throughout the Cottage is available. Parking is readily available at my home.
Accommodations include TWO SUNNY ROOMS, a ground floor bed/bath with a queen-size bed ($110.00/night). The downstairs bed/bath have been refurbished and updated for guests! Maximum number of guests downstairs is two. The UPSTAIRS TWIN ROOM will accommodate a third person. The spacious upstairs room/twin beds/shared bath ($95.00/night) has a sunny bathroom which is lightly shared with me. A FULL BREAKFAST is included each morning which includes a variety of fruit, juice, homemade breads, specially prepared eggs if desired, and tea/coffee. The Cottage will close in September this year but come to visit me in Venice, Italy. My beautiful apartment has a comfortable twin room and a lightly shared wonderful newly renovated bathroom available from October 1, 2012. It is centrally located in the heart of the city close to all services and on the beautiful Fondamenta San Felice, close to the spectacular areas of the Miseracordia, Rialto, Ghetto and public transportation -- all within comfortable walking distance. Breakfast is included as at the Cottage (allowing of course, for an Italian twist!). Please visit the listing, "Spectacular Affordable Venice!" for further details and reviews.
You are welcomed to use the sitting room, deck and garden.
Interaction with Guests
Breakfast is the time when we can visit while I serve. I strive to give guests as much privacy as possible when they are in the Cottage.
The Line #1 runs right from the end of my street (a 5 minute walk to the stop!) connecting you directly to the towns of Edgartown, Vineyard Haven (and the Steamship Authority in Vineyard Haven). From both stops, you can connect to buses all of the island. Bike shops are numerous if you prefer to rent by the day or longer. Of course, if you prefer and make your ferry reservation in time, you can travel around by car. You can taxi from the airport, rent a car or take public transportation (transfer to Line #1 required). I'm about 10 minutes from the airport.
Must be over 22 years of age
Maximum 2 persons/room
Please! Don't think us difficult! The Cottage is going green. We do ask that guests help us by limiting shower-time to 10 minutes, especially as it is understandable that you might need to shower twice daily after the beach or other summer sports. Also, all wet items must be hung in the bathrooms or if you prefer, dry your personal towels and wet bathing suits in my clean, aerated basement that features a dehumidier. It molds easily here in an island environment. NO food or drinks (except of course, water!) are absolutely not permitted in guest rooms.
Please! Give me one or two days notice as to when you will be arriving so that I can be here to meet you. It is not recommended that you bike to the Cottage for the first time, from the ferry at night. The entire path is not lighted; buses and taxis do transport bikes -- two per bus on the front bike rack.
We had a mother daughter weekend with a close friend and her daughter as well. We were very much welcomed upon arrival. Our host may have been somewhat taken back when she noticed that we arrived with 2 coolers of appetizers and wine to enjoy thru the weekend. Nancy was very gracious to us as guests, although the setting was more as a home stay rather than a bed and breakfast. The home was shared living space with she and her daughter. This was not a problem for us since we took advantage of every minute to explore the island. The continental breakfast were very good with fresh baked goods and fresh fruit and Italian coffee. She preferred that we shower outside which in the beginning caught us off guard. But, it actually was a very pleasant and refreshing experience Sitting and relaxing on the beautiful landscaped yard and deck made it very comfortable to enjoy appetizers and a glass of wine. My biggest disappointment was the fact that there was no air conditioning and it was a very humid weekend. Dressing and sleeping was a bit rough for the moms. Also being 2 1/2 miles from town made traveling a bit tough. I would stay closer to town or bring a car. I would recommend Nancy's place if you come with a car and if you can acclimate to NO air conditioning. Otherwise Nancy was a very gracious and sweet host.....
Thanks Ceil for your kind review. It was so nice meeting both you and your mom. I do note that I do not have airconditioning as generally, the Vineyard is a pleasant and cool as it has been this week. I try to be as environmentally careful as possible. I think that often, people do not read or remember all of the information which I provide including the location. As you note, I am outside of Edgartown but if people make use of the public transit right at the end of the street, it is not a problem. I'm sorry that did not work for you. Many older folks do stay but if you are not used to walking, then I agree, people should try for a location more central for their needs. My home is really set up for people who like to bike, kayak and generally move around, whether younger or older given its location to the bike path, the Land Bank Trails and Sengekontacket Pond. At any rate, as I am now severely limiting my hosting after this, my 6th year, I am glad that I met all of you and wish you all the best. Nancy
We spent three days at Nancy's home and enjoyed it thoroughly. Nancy is a warm and welcoming hostess. We really enjoyed her fascinating stories, her terrific coffee, and her tasty and healthy breakfasts, and we appreciated her generosity with her beach towels (we were traveling on scooters and hadn't packed any!) and her willingness to share her lovely home with us. I hope our paths will cross again some day, Nancy!
We had a lovely stay here in MV! Nancy was so warm and welcoming. We really appreciated the breakfast - especially the fresh fruit and coffee! The location was easy enough, just about 3 miles from downtown. We didn't find it difficult to find by cab and most cabs knew where to go. Don't miss the outdoor shower - it was a great experience! Overall, we enjoyed our stay!
The hostess was very welcoming and greeted us when we arrived. The location is quiet and off the main hwy. Beautiful backyard with birds everywhere. Outside shower is wonderful but not as private as I would like. Bring a robe to get back and forth to the shower.
The breakfast was over the top. Excellent variety of food. We had breakfast with another couple who were also staying there.
The hostess has strong views about politics so liberals will feel very comfortable here.
Thanks so much for your comments! And you are right! I do believe that we should take care of each other and at the least, offer the kinds of services and opportunities that ensure people's dignity. Of course, being liberal, I'm always interested in others' viewpoints -- well, maybe not Trump's! Be well. . .as I wind down have guests in my home -- a fascinating experience -- I certainly will reflect upon the many viewpoints that have voiced around the breakfast table!
We enjoyed our stay here. It's pretty much right between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs, which was a pretty good home base for people with bikes, but wouldn't be very walkable (though there are nearby buses). The list of rules was off-putting, including no putting you bag on the bed without first laying down a towel and no turning on lights in the house (just in case you would forget to turn them off later), but she gave us some good advice and we loved the back porch.
Hi Devin. Thanks for your comments. This is a homestay, not a hotel; after having hundreds of guest through and being fully-booked requiring change-overs every couple of days, one learns to ask for simple courtesies, e.g., providing a beach towel and asking if you wouldn't mind putting it on the quilt before putting your bag on the bed. Also, being environmentally aware does require that we are careful, in this fragile environment, about electricity, water and recycling. So, as we realized that the automatic flood light on the walkway, lighted guests' trip into the house and into the bedroom, we felt it unnecessary to keep lights on, making it easier for guests, since they are upstairs and downstairs, to not have to be concerned about who was in or not. This is people's time away, and having to worry about necessary details is something I try to keep to a minimum. It's all a matter of experience over many years of hosting. All best wishes.
Nancy was a fantastic host! Very gracious and accommodating. Her home is meticulously well maintained and scenic, and is situated perfectly on a quiet street in Edgartown.
We stayed 3 nights and we woke up every morning refreshed and ready to enjoy the island. Breakfast was great and chitchatting with Nancy was fun! Would recommend staying with her to absolutely anyone! Thank you again for a wonderful trip, Nancy!
We enjoyed our first ever visit to Martha's Vineyard. Nancy and her daughter were very friendly and talkative. It's an easy 1/2 mile walk to the bus stop if your bags are on wheels. You will want to take the bus, bike or drive to get anywhere because this home is in a remote neighborhood that doesn't have anything in walking distance; we recommend the bus. Unfortunately, we picked the hottest two days of the year and this home, like many here, does not have air conditioning. The breakfasts of muffins, juice and fresh fruit were delicious! I enjoyed the outdoor shower but it made my wife a little nervous. The indoor shower can't be used because she has trouble with dampness. The yard is beautifully landscaped with a nice deck and an oversized hammock for relaxing. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom that has a very comfy queen bed and a private bathroom just outside the door. Nancy works at her computer in the kitchen/dining area so she is always nearby if you have any questions. I feel this was a great value.
Dear Mike! Many thanks for your lovely review and comments regarding the Cottage and what I am able to offer. As I always say to guests, it is absolutely not essential if one is uncomfortable to shower in our spacious outdoor shower. If one is nervous, as Carla apparently was, she would be welcomed to shower indoors. It is a Vineyard tradition, as noted in the description which I hope guests will read prior to booking, as we are aware, living on an island, of how to keep homes as comfortable as possible, particularly when we are not airconditioned. That is why is it build is a roomy, enclosed hot and cold water space, typical of most Vineyard and Cape homes. I'm sorry that Carla was uncomfortable as the majority of guests enjoy the fresh-air, treetops, sun or moon and stars overhead when outside!
It is true that the Cottage is not directly in town (as noted in the description and on the google map) but we have many homes that actually are remote, a mile or more down a dirt-road and so, the Cottage is actually located in a well-serviced neighborhood on a paved road. I just wanted to clarify as access to the bus is a 5 minute walk from my home on a lighted street.
I know that you booked very last minute and so, perhaps, didn't have time to read carefully the amenities, etc. However, it was a pleasure to have met you and wish you and Carla all the best! Nancy

Our home on the Vineyard is a special place for guests who wish to enjoy the beauty and vitality of this incredible island. Instead of just 'the playground for the rich and famous," the Vineyard is a microcosm of America -- its strengths and weaknesses. Come and be a part of it! Until 2011, I hosted international students through my project. But, having enjoyed the guests who brought the world to my doorstep since 2010, I am now only hosting Airbnb guests as I enter my 5th year of hosting. And now, I'm able to share my beautiful home in an historic area of Venice with you! Please visit Spectacular Affordable Venice! Please come to this magical, historically significant city!
