We serve gourmet, French press coffee, and fresh made muffins on your first morning. Have it on the patio in the garden! We love visitors and can help steer you to the best of Durham, including cheap eats and gourmet treats, hiking/biking trails, museums, events, and the nightlife scene.
When we have airbnb guests staying in our outside cottage room, you would share the guest bathroom that is across from your room. If needed, guests can also use the other bathroom/shower in the house.
When we've had double bookings we've had great luck with everyone--instant parties have formed with a bottle of wine around the dining table or out on the patio. We seem to be under some fortunate moon that brings very compatible people here -- charming, interesting, and with advanced social skills.
If you're interested in our outside, more private room, look for our other listing titled "Creamsicle Cottage Near Duke+Dwntwn". (click on our profile and then look on the left for our other listings). That room is much larger and more private with microfridge and microwave for the same price, but you have to come into the main house for the bathroom/shower.

Interaction with Guests
We enjoy or morning coffee with our guest and have had many pleasant evenings on the patio sharing a glass of wine and hearing of their travels.
Just a mile or so from Duke or downtown, we live in a quiet, tree-shaded neighborhood of cottages and bungalows that are being lovingly tended with gardens and plantings. Our neighbors are an eclectic mix of teachers, artists, retirees, young couples and Duke professors. We meet each other frequently on the street as we walk dogs, jog, push baby carriers, tend gardens or just stroll the streets of an evening, so there is a strong sense of community and fellowship.
We will pick up guests for free from the Amtrak or the bus station. Parking in front of our house is easy and free.
We offer $20 pick up or drop off from RDU airport--cheaper than taxis or Uber/Lyft. We also give lifts around the downtown/Duke area for $5 if we aren't busy.

We must pre-approve guests who visit and/or stay over who are not part of your initial reservation.
Lovely stay at the garden house. The room was clean and ready for our arrival. Towels, shampoo, and a fan was available for our use. The morning muffins and coffee was an added bonus. We felt very comfortable coming and going as we pleased, and enjoyed sipping coffee in the garden.
The location is excellent and Mesa&Stuart had a very helpful guidebook with restaurant recommendations and maps. The couple has a cat and dog--both were very sweet and quiet. As someone with allergies, I appreciated that the room was free of pet dander.
A half-hour in the garden when I arrived was like a day at the spa ... It's filled with beautifully tended plants, the soothing sound of running water, and a lyric poem composed of the wings and songs of birds. I actually stayed later than I'd planned in Durham just so that I could enjoy the morning in the garden. Mesa (the grand gardner) and Stuart (the rock-lifter and water engineer) have created a really lovely spot - you'd never know that you are just a couple of minutes from downtown!
I also greatly enjoyed them - two intelligent, artistic and engaging people - and their home, with its tasteful yet eclectic decor. And yes, all the other essentials are there: They were there to greet me, explained everything well, and were very gracious in accommodating my need for fridge space. The bed was comfortable, the room was quiet, everything was clean. I really did feel at home.
The location was absolutely perfect. It was 5 to 7 minutes' drive for everything I was going to: the Asher art museum at Duke, a bookstore downtown, a great tapas restaurant (Mateo), and the American Tobacco Historic District. Yet despite being so close to town, the neighborhood was quiet and plenty of street parking.
All in all, totally charming, an excellent value, and a lovely stay!
As always, Stuart and Mesa are wonderful hosts. I have stayed at their home so many time, I have lost count. I would highly recommend staying with them. Thanks again, Mesa and Stuart. See you soon. Liz
Had a great stay. Mesa & Stuart were super friendly, the room was perfect size/cost, and the location was convenient to downtown and all our activities. Durham was a ton of fun, if we ever return we'll stay here again. Thanks!
The garden house was so beautiful and peaceful! I sat in the garden daily and relaxed. I highly recommend staying with Mesa and Stuart when passing thru this beautiful city.
Mesa and Stuart are amazing hosts. They really took the time to make us feel welcome. Their backyard is magical. They have great stories and great insights into Durham. They even took us to a Durham Bulls game!
Mesa and Stuart's house is beautiful, welcoming and quiet, in a lovely neighborhood near downtown Durham. I loved the guest room, and it was a peaceful place to relax while exploring the city. Mesa and Stuart themselves are wonderful and welcoming to guests while also providing space. We had a great conversation over tea, and I would be happy to stay with them again!

About the Host, Mesa & Stuart
I am a teacher, writer, photographer, reader, traveler, and lover of children and animals. I love big long novels, hiking to remote canyons, exploring side streets in European cities, and walking my dogs. My husband, Stuart, and I travel as often as we can, and like to stay at hostels, monastaries, and off-beat lodgings. My husband is a musician, web designer, movie buff, and, as I was told nearly thirty years ago when I first met him and his friend was describing him to me, no matter what we do,he always has more fun than anyone else.
