About This Listing
Private bedroom downstairs in 6-bedroom house. Comfy, queen-size bed, shared bath, kitchen. My Cantonese grandmother and little sister live here, so you must get along with them. West Portal neighborhood is quiet and safe. Easy public transportation.
Bright and spacious, two-story single-family home in a quiet, safe neighborhood close to shops and public transportation.
Six-bedrooms, two-bathrooms, a small kitchen for limited use. (I grew up here with five younger siblings.)
Important: There will be other guests & tenants living here and sharing a bathroom. My grandmother and little sister (15 years old) live here, too. Family members drop by occasionally.
You must be comfortable interacting with different people. Grandma only speaks Cantonese, a little bit Mandarin and English. The rest of us speak English and some Cantonese.
Your room is downstairs. It's private, has a window, and one queen bed that sleeps up to 2 people. There's a dresser, mirror, desk and chair.
It is adjacent to the downstairs living room, shared bath, backyard, and other bedrooms downstairs.
You would normally enter through the front door, upstairs, and walk down a flight of stairs to get to your room. Must be comfortable with stairs.
Guests have access to common spaces including the kitchen, backyard, bathrooms and downstairs living room.
Kitchen use is limited because it is small, but comes with a coffee maker, microwave, toaster, fridge space, hot water, plates, utensils, etc.
There is a stove that may be used for a little bit of cooking, but usually grandma is cooking in the kitchen and uses the stove and oven.
A few breakfast items are provided including coffee, fruit, cereal, milk and juice.
Laundry machines are in the garage and free to use. Please wash only large loads to save water and energy.
The bathroom downstairs is shared with other guests and tenants, though there is another bathroom upstairs that anyone can use if necessary. Shampoo, soap, and towels are provided.
Interaction with Guests
I expect guests to be independent, friendly with others, communicative, tidy, and easy-going.
I am 30 years old, Chinese-American, born and raised in San Francisco, mostly in this house. I love meeting new people! I usually greet guests on the day they arrive, show them around the house, and answer questions.
From there, you're on your own, but you can always call or text me with questions.
I travel between San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland, usually with a tool in hand fixing things, cleaning. I'm at the house often during the day when you're probably out and about.
My girlfriend lives in Berkeley/Oakland and I spend a lot of time there.
My grandmother and sister, Jana, are very friendly people and happy to answer questions, though they will keep mostly to themselves.
Grandma speaks Cantonese, understands Mandarin, and makes her best effort to communicate in English. She's always home.
Jana speaks English very well and is learning Mandarin!
West Portal Neighborhood is residential, quiet and safe. Very close to public transportation.
West Portal Avenue, two blocks away, has everything you need: coffee, bagels, restaurants, drug stores, book store, movie theater, you name it!
We are close to Twin Peaks, The Sunset Neighborhood, St. Francis Wood, and Forest Hill.
Nearby grocery stores are Safeway at 17th Ave. and Taraval St. (10 blocks away), produce stores on West Portal Ave (4 blocks away), Trader Joe's at Stonestown (10 minute drive), and Whole Foods on Market St. (15 minute bus and walk).
Walgreen's is a major drug store where you can buy toiletries or snacks and it's on West Portal Avenue as well.
San Francisco weather is unpredictable, often foggy especially in the summer. Please wear layers and always bring a jacket.
If you're looking for a place to eat or hang out and the fog is getting you down, take MUNI towards Downtown and get off at Castro or Powell Station. It tends to be sunnier there.
My favorite neighborhoods are: Castro, Noe Valley, The Mission, Duboce Triangle, Lower Haight, Inner Sunset.
Other Cities to Visit: Berkeley, Sausalito, Oakland, Palo Alto.
Public transportation is preferred as parking is difficult in this city.
We are a couple blocks away from West Portal Station, a major hub. There you can find MUNI streetcars L, M, K, and buses 17 and 48. If you take MUNI downtown, you can connect to BART or Caltrain to get to the East Bay or South Bay.
I'm happy to show you how to get around and where to buy a Clipper Card to use on buses. Also, (website hidden) Maps is a great tool for figuring out which buses to take.
The walk to the West Portal Station is easy and it is safe to walk around here at night.
I do drive, but parking around here is very limited. If you have a car, please note that all parking in our neighborhood is 2-hour parking 8am to 6pm Monday through Friday.
A half-mile away, there are some streets that allow cars to remain parked for a week at a time. It's better not to have a car unless you plan on parking only at night or on weekends.
Other Things to Note
This neighborhood is a hidden gem and we hope you love it and treat it well. My family is dear to me and their comfort and safety is my priority, so only the most well-behaved houseguests will be allowed to stay. So far all of our experiences have been wonderful!
Be very nice, step lightly, say hello to others.
Keep quiet after 10 pm and before 7 am. You may enter and exit during quiet hours, but be quiet for others who may be sleeping. Please limit cooking and showering at night while others are sleeping.
No unauthorized guests allowed in the house. No drugs, no smoking indoors, no pets, no drama. Use indoor voices. Please limit drinking alcohol in the house and eating over the carpet.
Please help keep common areas clean and respect other people's privacy.
My little sister is still a minor and I want her to feel safe at home.
We showed up earlier than we had planned for our check-in time throwing everyone off kilter but Nancy took it in stride and was very gracious despite us throwing a wrench in her plans. Our room was lovely, clean and comfortable. The other guests were very pleasant and we had an absolutely lovely time. Nancy was an amazing hostess and we had a great time chatting with her when she was around the house. We would most definitely stay here again!!
We stayed in Nancy's family's home in West Portal for about five weeks and it was perfect! It's a 5 minute walk to the Muni station, and I don't think I ever waited longer than a minute for a train. I loved all of the shops and restaurants on West Portal Ave. and Taraval - we ate out a ton and never felt like we were "too far away" from things going on in the city. West Portal has it's own scene and community to enjoy and some might even say that it's one of the only neighborhoods that feels like "old San Francisco."
The home is super clean and inviting. Nancy has prepared for the amount of travelers coming in and out by giving everyone labeled areas of the kitchen and bathroom for their stuff. This made living with a bunch of other people very easy!
Nancy and her family are very kind. Nancy was always checking in with updates on what housemates were coming and going, and she has breakfast available every morning.
And last, but not least, my favorite part was the bed. It was SO COMFORTABLE. Sometimes Airbnbs give you the extra bed or just a futon, but this felt luxurious and amazing.
Thank you, for the excellent hospitality, Nancy and family!
A really nice house, close to the metro station and a supermarket.
Nancy's House is very clean and well organized.
Nancy and her familly are peaceful and kind.
A good experience.
Thanks a lot!
Nancy was a wonderful host. She was really accommodating when I checked in later than planned as I was stuck in the airport. Myself and Brian loved staying there and will be recommending friends for sure! Brilliant location and super clean!
Nancy was an excellent host, her home is in a great area. I was running a little late on my check out date and she was okay with it. Nancy's home is quiet and peaceful. She does a great job picking tenants as everyone was warm, open and inviting.
Nancy is a thoughtful host. She takes care of every little detail to make you feel welcome. The bedroom was just as described, nice and comfortable. The bathroom was shared with other guests, but it was always clean. The neighborhood is perfect, calm and quiet but with easy access to transportation and great restaurants and stores around. Loved my stay!

About the Host, Nancy
I'm 30 years old and originally from San Francisco, eldest of 6, Chinese-American. I moved back to the Bay Area in 2013 after living in LA for 4 years. I did my undergrad at Stanford, got my MBA at UCLA and have worked in interior design, product design, graphic and web design.
I love to hike, throw a football, and watch the sun set. I garden on sunny days and cook when I'm inspired.
You will usually see me with a tool in my hand. I like construction and DIY projects. I built a fence recently and fix things around the house. I really like to clean.
My wonderful girlfriend, Cathy, lives in Berkeley and my (large) family lives in San Francisco. I have a house in Oakland. I split my time between San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland and cross the bridge almost everyday.
I love meeting people and sharing my home, and that is why I host. As a host, I want to make sure that you have everything you need to start your day right and that you have a pleasant home to return to. You'll have plenty of freedom to explore the City on your own. I'm pretty hands-off after the first day, but I'm always near my cell phone if you need help, unless I'm camping or on vacation.
As a guest, I'm quiet, independent. I like to start my day early and sleep around 11 PM. I prefer nature to cities, I like to read books, I love coffee, I travel with my girlfriend who likes the same things.
My motto? I count my blessings.
