Private, charming, modern, tranquil, unique, gorgeous and sunny 1.5 acre riverfront property on the Russian River in the Sonoma Wine Country with fruit trees, hot tub, fire pit, gourmet kitchen, grill, all the amenities and a large PRIVATE BEACH!

The Space

The house is both cozy and modern. It is a fully remodeled mid-century cabin, designed by the me, the owner (I'm an architect). Inside you'll find light and airy living spaces with gorgeous exposed redwood wood beam ceilings, fir floors, skylights and dozens of windows (all with gorgeous views). The house is appointed with striking vintage furniture and a fully equipped modern kitchen (including gas cooktop and convection oven). The house is also equipped with a modern tiled bathroom, a wood burning stove, stereo, hi-speed wifi, tv/dvd, sumptuous linens and gas heat to keep you warm at night if you are too lazy to build a fire.

The house opens to 2 decks (furnished with stainless steel gas grill, dining tables and lounge chairs) overlooking the yard, the river and beyond. Moving outside, the house is framed by fruit trees (plum, apple, fig, pear, orange, etc), olive trees, grape vines and bay laurels. Under the orange tree, with a view of the river, is a large hot tub, which is adjacent to a fire pit and a tomato/herb garden. Moving towards the river, the cultured order of the yard gives way to a gently rolling meadow, which is flanked by an asparagus patch and maple and walnut trees cradling a hammock (of course with river views). Descend a little further and the native river habitat of willows, wild grapes and mugwort lead you to the beach made of only sand, pebbles and sun carved by the flowing waters of the glorious Russian River.

The beach is 130' long and has gorgeous views up and down the redwood lined river corridor as well as a view of the Hacienda Bridge. The river is shallow and calm in the summer (perfect for boating or tubing- canoe and innertubes provided), but the mighty Russian River grows immensely and dramatically thunders to life in the winter. The Russian River is home to ducks, great blue herons, osprey, hawks, river otters and wild turkeys as well as salmon, steelhead, bass and sturgeon. The property is very sunny (no redwoods), yet has shade trees (with hammocks) for comfort in the summer. The air is scented with bay leaves, lemon balm, fennel, mugwort, redwood and orange blossoms…

Summer is hot and lush, but the water in the river is the perfect temperature for cooling. On winter mornings the sun rises through river fog wisping through the hills and between the redwoods, which almost always burns off and ends up sunny and clear. The nights are cool all year round, which is why the local wine is so good (and so necessary!).

Interaction with Guests

When my house is rented, I am exiled to San Francisco- so I am not on the property at all. You will have complete privacy (but unfortunately not the pleasure of my company!). However, I try to be reachable by email, text or phone at all times.

The Neighborhood

A block away is Sunset Beach State Park with several beaches and trails. Hacienda beach is a hop/skip/jump away. A block away in the other direction is Westside (email hidden) landmark), which follows the river and meanders through miles and miles of vineyards and dozens of some of the best wineries in the world (ending up in wonderful Healdsburg). Away from the river are mysterious majestic redwood covered hills that eventually lead to the dramatic rocky Sonoma coast with its beautiful and dramatic beaches.

The area has great restaurants, organic farms, wineries and artisan food makers of all sorts.

Getting around

The property is only 10 minutes off the Highway 101 River Road exit- which is only an hour drive from the Golden Gate Bridge (less if you are less than law abiding). Nearby are Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Graton, Guerneville, Occidental and Jenner. There is a bus that stops 2 blocks away from the house that goes directly to Downtown Santa Rosa.

Other Things to Note

There is an adorable black cat named Willis who is convinced that he lives in the house. He is EXTREMELY friendly and a total cuddleslut. If you let him, he will spend as much time in your lap and/or in your bed as possible. There is cat food in the house if you want to feed him, but there are other neighbors who feed him as well, so don't feel obliged.

  • Beautiful place on the river, just as described. We arrived a little early and ran into Jay. He (email hidden) who really wants you to enjoy your visit. We will definitely go back.

  • We had such a great time! The house is very charming and it's a great location right on the Russian River. We had great weather so it was great being able to sit outside and grill. Thank you so much, Jay!

  • Amazing place right on the Russian River! Tons of light, perfectly secluded without being far from a ton of tiny towns to explore and loads of great wineries a few minutes drive away. Would go back in an instant.

  • Two days on the Russian River felt like a whole week. This place was great. Jay has done a really excellent job designing the place and making it feel rustic & relaxed, but also sleek and modern. The location on the river is excellent for wandering down to the private beach or just sitting on one of the balconies and enjoying the afternoon. Love all the hammocks and fireplaces. 5 out of 5 stars and I am sure I will be back again at some point.

  • Jays Place was a great experience! Wonderful place for a peaceful birthday celebration and our dog loved the private river! Great place to rejuvenate!

  • After a few weeks of being on the road and working long hours, me and my boyfriend came here to spend a few days away from it all. Jay was amazingly friendly and gracious, he offered us some freshly picked Asparagus when we first arrived, answered all our questions, and let us check out late seeing as no one was checking in after us. The home itself is BEAUTIFUL and perfectly situated on the Russian River. You're nestled in the woods, but just a short bike ride to Guerneville. Prior to the visit, Jay made himself available to answer any questions we had and definitely ensured we were taken care of throughout our stay. If you're looking for a quiet getaway not too far from San Francisco, this is the place. You will have all the luxuries you can imagine in this cozy cabin. I've already raved to my friends and colleagues about this place and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to visit.

  • Great place. Perfect for weekend getaway. Very central location good for tasting or stops in town. Well stocked kitchen and a great deck to enjoy a morning coffee. Jay's instructions are very detailed, helpful and humorous. Would def go back.

    April 2014
  • Jay was super responsible throughout the whole process, answered all questions I had related to the house and things to do in the surrounding area and the house itself was beautiful and comfortable. Top marks all around, will definitely be coming back.

    March 2014
  • Jay's house is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway. The location is great for visiting wineries and wandering around the towns of Guerneville and Healdsburg - and then returning to a private retreat. The description is right on, and the house is well stocked with anything you would need to cook a meal or otherwise enjoy the space and the surroundings.

Over the past 30 years I have travelled extensively to so many amazing locations over 4 continents staying at all sorts of places- including 5 star hotels, divey guest houses, hostels, dorms, cabins and camping in the mountains, jungle, desert and beaches. When traveling in places with no tourist infrastructure, I have stayed in houses, barns, schools, a hospital and even a bank! I am so lucky to own home in this magical place and I like to make it available for travelers to enjoy and remember. I live in the house part-time and live in an apartment in San Francisco the rest of the time. My dog juno travels back and forth with me and we often have foster dogs tagging along as well.
