I have a stunning little cabin up in the Blue Mountains, sitting quietly beside a creek. You won't find anything quite like it.
The building is an old shed that I have rebuilt from recycled materials; it is hard to describe, but it has affectionately been labelled 'The Hut'. There is one large 'warehouse' style room with a loft bed, a day bed (both queen sized), a desk below the window and big slow combustion stove. The second smaller room is the sitting room/kitchen with an old school gas stove and everything you need for making a feast! Except a fridge...please read on.
This property is deliberately simple. Power is solar, water is gravity fed from a water tank up the hill, there is a loo with a view just behind the hut and the shower is outside in an old wine barrel. You may just have to trust me on this one - but once you have bathed with currawongs warbling or under a starry sky, you can be transformed.
Now in talking of the simple charms, the hut is still extremely comfortable. There is instant gas heating and gas hot water. I supply lovely flannelette sheets, and soft towels. There are books and rugs and wood for the slow combustion stove (for your first night). There is no internet, TV & phone service is spare. And yet it is not completely isolated.
The hut is only 5 minutes drive from Katoomba and the world famous Three Sisters. You can even catch the '697' bus from the train station. But then again, once here, it is best to stay... Hike down to Minni Ha Ha Falls, explore the extensive bush walks or jump across the creek and wander up the track to Leura for a beer at the Alex.
It is a hard place to describe in a few words so if you are curious, please send me a few words and I will respond happily. If you are going to book, please have your verifications sorted first. Thanks.
- There is NO 240 Volt power but there IS hot running water
- Breakfast (tea, coffee, dried fruit, oats & UHT milk) and kitchen basics supplied
- It is very private but NOT isolated
- Yes it is very warm. I have designed it this way:)

Such a beautiful spot!! I was unlucky and it rained most of the time I was there, but to be honest it didn't really matter when you're in a place as nice as Josh's cabin! I don't think I would want to stay anywhere else in the Blue Mountains region.
Thanks again Josh!
This is a fantastic place to stay if you are visiting the Blue Mountains of NSW. The cabin offers complete privacy in a secluded location giving you the impression you’re the only people within miles, yet within minutes you can be in the wonderful quaint village of Leura enjoying a coffee and taking in all the village has to offer.
A stay at the cottage will be an experience you will never forget from the wonderful shower, a toilet with the most amazing view to waking up in the morning to the sounds of native birds.
Josh is a fantastic host who makes sure all your needs are met for whatever you require from the best places to visit for coffee, dinner, bakery or a drink to the most fantastic walks through the native bushland.
Within a short stroll is the most amazing waterfall and pool straight out of a Hollywood movie. Get up early and enjoy the experience before anyone else turns up.
My wife and I stayed at Josh's cabin to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, we couldn't have wished for a more romantic setting and an unforgettable experience.
We will definitely be going back and look forward to experiencing the cabin during the winter months and having a glass of wine in front of the fire.
A stay at this stunning Katoomba Cabin is something you will not regret and will stay with you for a long time after you leave.
My husband and I along with our puppy Milly decided to stay at Josh's Cabin for 4 nights as a bit of an impulse adventure and escape from Sydney. We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay! The glowing reviews and even the pictures don't do the place justice - once you arrive it's apparent how much TLC he has put into the place and the closer you look, the more discoveries you make and the more you appreciate his design aesthetic and attention to detail.
Josh as a host was great. I think he could probably sense from my questions before we arrived that the mountains were a little out of my comfort zone but he went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable - giving us mosquito net over the bed and even drew maps by hand showing us trails we could take our dog on.
A few observations from our stay -
- The birds are amazing. Crimson Rosellas everywhere.
- The Cabin is a short drive to Leura or Katoomba but we found ourselves wanting to stay in the natural beauty mostly
- It rained while we there but that was one of my favorite parts. The rain in the mountains is almost magical
- Not having phones/tvs etc did not take anything to get used to. I only charged my phone in the car so I could take pictures.
- I was a little worried about bugs but they were not an issue at all. I was actually surprised with the lack of bugs (surprised but not complaining!) We left the windows open the nights we wanted a breeze and fell asleep with the wood burning heater on the nights there was a bit of a chill
- Outdoor showers are kind of the best things ever
If you were like me and are a little hesitant to get "off the grid" - please take the plunge! You won't regret it. We look forward to visiting again.
What a magical place!
For those of you who want a unique experience, isolated from the rush of the 21st century and close to the Australian bush this is for you!
Josh has assembled..yes assembled! ..an environment where every element is personal with its own special history. Its all been lovingly put together with a particular creative flair.
This roomy cabin has everything you need and more. Birds abound, the creek bubbles away and at night the stars dazzle. Your sundowner on those two chairs tastes especially good!
Go for it! You won't regret it....
This place is absolutely fantastic. Exactly as described. Right from the start, Josh was informative and completely accommodating. He even sorted out a minor problem for us during our stay in spite of being in the middle of a holiday overseas! We went to the hut for a writing retreat and it was absolutely perfect. The views and the solitude were great for getting creative work finished. If we needed a break we could take the short walk down to the breathtaking Minni Ha Ha Falls or cook up a feast in the cute little kitchen which has the best little antique stove. (I wanted to keep it!) The outdoor shower was bliss on the chilly nights. The cabin is styled with a keen design eye. Reclaimed materials and furniture give this little hut tremendous heart and character. Also with a 40 minute walk or 10 minute cab to town you are presented with fantastic food choices and excellent wine. If you're looking for a relaxing place to get away from it all for a couple of days, this is the one.
The Hut is a "must" for the Blue Mountains! Amazing property and the house is filled with simple personality. From the outdoor shower to the wood stove - it's a unique and relaxing place. Joshua was a great host and gave us all the insider information for the area. Make sure you take a dip at the nearby falls!
Loved the hut! Make sure you are prepared to only charge your phone in the car or at local cafes, but then forget about it and just relax in the tranquility of this special place! It's like magic, almost instantly you find yourself forgetting about what time it is and the idea that you have to be anywhere or do anything. Joshua has set it up very well, so you have everything you need to enjoy time with your loves ones, which included our little dog who was allowed inside as part of the family. Thanks for a beautiful break away Joshua!
Staying in the Hut was a magical experience. I felt instantly at home and was made to feel very welcome by both Josh and Sharni. Every inch of the cabin is full of rustic charm, from the outdoor bathing tub to the delightfully eclectic selection of crockery and cookware. I felt relaxed and inspired to draw and sing - feeling both isolated from the city and completely at one with nature and the peaceful surroundings. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful space...! Liz
Everything about this experience was perfect - from Josh's friendly email welcome, to the information about the property, the warm bees-wax aroma that greeted us at the door, and the simple charm of the hut itself.
We loved the relaxed environment and, the lack of distraction, meant kicking back and enjoying each other's company was easy and automatic. It's also a great place to work! Josh's bench proved to be an excellent space for rolling out the butcher paper and drawing up mind-maps - proof that we don't always need 240V power:) As for the mobiles, Telstra worked a treat and we recharged our phones in the car.
Josh also provided info about local cafes, hangouts and walks - the closest being Mini Ha Ha Falls and a heap of fun. Take your swimmers - the water's fab! And the wildlife and bird-calls are a delight.
I can't recommend this space highly enough and look forward to visiting it again in the future.
Thanks for having us! Ev
We were really excited to stay at this cabin and when we did we fell in love with it! Every wall and piece of furniture has had its own life before becoming a part of the cabin. Josh has considerately intertwined the stories of each piece to make a space that is really special and engaging. There has been a great amount of respect given to the beautiful surrounds too! The large windows let you feel enveloped by nature and the comfy bed gives you a great view into the bush. Everything is so perfectly simple, from cooking a meal to eat by candlelight on the fantastic stove (cutely named Adelaide I think.. :) to taking a shower outside while you watch the bush, these simple pleasures make you feel like you have unwound, even in a short visit (as ours was!). Josh is a lovely, genuine guy which makes everything very comfortable from the time you make contact and his cabin makes such a wonderful impression that you leave hoping to visit again.
