Our warm cosy bedroom with refreshment tray will give you a relaxing night after your journey. Our home is situated in a quiet part of Durham, 10 MINUTES FROM THE CITY on public transport. Convenient for the University and stunning Cathedral.
We love to have people stay with us!
Your bedroom contains a small double bed with electric blanket, wardrobe, chest of drawers, flatscreen TV with freeview / DVD player, free wi-fi and a kettle/refreshment tray to provide that early morning tea or coffee! Sweets and biscuits are often provided too! Your room looks out over our rear garden and all bedlinen and towels are provided. The room is for ONE PERSON only.
Your car can be parked on the double drive.
You will be sleeping in one of our 3 double bedrooms with sole use of a private bathroom one step away. In the bathroom a new power shower has been installed (Dec 2014). Toiletries are provided too.. We have a breakfast area which is yours to use, but the rest of the house is shared with us!
Interaction with Guests
At least one of us (but generally both) will be at home to receive you on arrival, and you are very welcome to a coffee/tea with us! After that, we will not disturb you, but we'll be available if you need anything.....
Brian loves to cook English breakfasts, and will provide one for you if required for £5. (Please let us know before you arrive). Otherwise in the morning help yourself to fruit juice, tea / coffee, fruit, toast and jam or marmalade. The table will be set for you... There is always soya milk in the fridge, sometimes coconut milk too. (Helen also has Vegemite for fellow lovers of that delight!) We are generally around at breakfast time, depending on how early you need to get away.....
Our neighbourhood is very quiet, despite being 100 yards from a Co-op corner shop, hairdresser and English pub (The Jovial Monk) which also offers a taxi service. The shop is useful for freshly baked items, drinks, sandwiches and pizzas / ready meals which can be heated in our oven / microwave. At the top of the street, the Newton Grange pub offers a comfortable environment in which to drink or have lunch/dinner. If you have a car, about a mile away from our home, stand the 13th Century ruins of Finchale Priory by the River Wear.
Attractions in the city include the magnificent Cathedral and Castle and beautiful walks along the River Wear. There is a plethora of pubs, coffee shops and restaurants (Italian / Indian / Mexican / Chinese / Thai etc) in Durham City which reflect the tastes of locals as well as the (phone number hidden) students who arrive in Durham every October.
Without a car, Durham city centre is about 40 minutes walk away through the countryside (on tarmac paths). We have a very regular bus service; the bus stop is 150 yards away and the No 64 will get you to the historic city centre in 10 minutes. By car you'll get to a parking space in Durham in 5-10 minutes. Car parking is by meter, from 30p to 50p per half hour, but free after 6pm.
Newcastle International Airport is approximately 40 minutes drive away. To get to our home from the airport, take the Metro train to Newcastle, then intercity train to Durham. From there, take a taxi (£5 - £8) or take a bus trip (No 64) from North Road. (Very near to the train station). Durham is on a main line train route to London (2 hours 54 minutes), Newcastle (15 minutes), Edinburgh (1 hour 15 minutes). The train station is about 6 mins away from our home by taxi, 10 mins by bus, or a 40 minute walk away.

I arrived at Brian and Helen's home a little weary from my travels and I received a wonderful and warm welcome. After showing me my room, Helen put the kettle on and we enjoyed a cup of tea and chatted about the area and also discovered we had lots in common. Extremely kind and gracious hosts. The room is cozy and characterful and the bed very comfortable. It was great to have a private bathroom which had everything you could possibly need for your stay.
Once again an extremely welcoming stay with my very friendly and professional hosts, Brian and Helen. A great location, easy to get into Durham city centre, very comfortable room. Many thanks.
Brian and Helen were welcoming from the start. I received emails confirming my reservation and making sure I knew how to find their house. The house is positioned very conveniently for Durham and is in a quiet suburban area. on arrival I was made welcome and shown around the facilities. The house is very clean tidy and comfortable and I had everything I needed during my stay. there was plenty of choice of good wholesome foods for breakfast. I would not hesitate to stay here again next time I am
visiting Durham and I'm very grateful to Brian and Helen for their hospitality.
Brian and Helen made me feel very welcome on arrival and throughout my stay. The room was very comfortable and exactly as described. The surrounding area is very quiet, so it was a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of the nearby city. A home from home. Highly recommended.
I had a wonderful time as guest at the home of Brian and Helen. Both of them were such excellent host. Though my car broke down on the motorway late in the night on the day of arrival, my host waited until I was in and safe, and the comfortable bed made it easy for me to have a good night rest after the stress of the day. Brian gave me a lift the next day and later introduced me to his garage, and my car was fixed and back on the road in no time with such great expertise. Their home was warm and friendly, and even though it was my first experience with airbnb, I felt really at home in their home and was not paranoid at all. Surprisingly I was offered the opportunity to join them at the private dinner they organised for some of their friends, as they already took me as an integral part of their family. Such great and warm experience!.
A pity that I could not stay their much longer and to have them as permanent landlords during my stay at Durham.
Within a short time, we had shared previous life experiences and future plans!. An atmosphere of peace and freedom was evident and that made a clear difference.
Another relaxing night with lovely hosts Helen and Brian. The addition of the private bathroom and new power shower is an added bonus to an already very comfortable stay. Highly recommended, a home from home.
The stay in Brian & Helen's place was fantastic, I wish I could stay longer, and I'm sure I'd like to stay in their place again if I get chance to Durham again. Brian is a nice gentleman, while Helen is a elegant lady. They helped me a lot in many ways. The room is neat and comfy with delicate decoration. And the home-made English breakfast is very yummy. I think it's not only a great accommodation, but also a good chance to experience local culture. Highly recommend!
PLEASE NOTE - This is the only listing we have on airbnb.
We are a retired couple whose children have flown the nest.
Brian is enjoying his retirement from an Architectural Design Department within a Local Authority. Helen worked with Victim Support County Durham for 13 years.
A few years ago our daughter was married in Pennsylvania. Brian found superb airbnb accommodation in Philadelphia, which gave him the idea of hosting in UK. Since then, we've been guests in Airbnb rooms in Nottingham, Coldstream and more recently (Dec 2014) Manchester to visit our son and his wife. So we fully appreciate being 'guests' and are getting to understand 'hosting' too.
We celebrated our 60th birthdays with a trip to Andalucia, Spain. However Greece is Brian's favourite hot holiday destination while Helen loved Zell Am See in Austria and Iceland. We've had great trips to see friends and family in San Antonio, Texas and Philadelphia USA.
Other places visited include Belarus, Poland, France, Belgium, Cyprus, Crete, Zakynthos and Corfu.
We also love Great British travel.... including Scotland, Wales, Wiltshire, Derbyshire and North Yorkshire...
