We are a retired married couple and our children have flown the nest...
We live on a quiet cul de sac, approximately 40 minutes walk to Durham centre through the countryside (on tarmac paths). A 6 minute car drive, or a 10 minute bus ride (regular service close by) will get you to the historic city centre. There's also a nearby taxi service.
We have a small 2 storey semi detached house with only one bathroom with wc, bath and shower. So the bathroom would be shared with us. All bedrooms and bathroom are on the first floor. On the ground floor we have a separate small dining room, lounge and separate kitchen. Just off the kitchen there is a small breakfast area looking out into the rear garden.
Guests would use a bedroom which contains a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, flatscreen TV with Freeview / DVD player, and Tea & Coffee making facility with kettle. (also many books to read and travel information!). All bedlinen and towels are provided. It looks out on to the rear garden. The room is for ONE PERSON only.
Good access to Yorkshire, the Northumbrian coast and countryside.
Your car can be parked on the drive.
You will have use of the internet, use of the kitchen and breakfast area and we can provide a cooked English breakfast, if required, at £5 per person. Otherwise help yourself to tea / coffee, fruit, toast and jam / marmalade.
Our home is about 100yards from a Co-op corner shop; useful for freshly baked items, drinks and sandwiches. We are also just 5minutes from the Newton Grange pub which serves lunches and evening meals. ((website hidden))
Main attractions in the city are the magnificent Cathedral and Castle and the lovely walks along the river. There is a plethora of pubs, coffee shops and restaurants (Italian / Indian / Mexican / Chinese / Thai etc) in Durham City and a few pubs close to our home. About a mile away from our home, stand the 13th Century ruins of Finchale Priory.
Newcastle International airport is approximately 40 minutes drive away and is also accessible by train from Durham. Durham is on a main line train route to London (2 hours 54 minutes), Newcastle (15 minutes), Edinburgh (1 hour 15 minutes). The train station is about 8mins away from our home by taxi, or a 40minute walk away.
Helen and Brian are very nice and helpful. Their house is well located with a large shopping area nearby. The room is clean and pretty, with a soft yet supportive bed. Quietness is essential as in most UK houses, sound gets through wall easily. Overall strongly recommended. Thanks Brian for the help on my car! Adrian
I had a lovely stay with Brian and Helen. They were very friendly and helpful and the room was very comfortable. I stayed one night to
pick up my daughter from the university. It was convenient being able to park the. car in the driveway, and I had a key to come and go as
I wished. I will certainly stay there again next time
I am in beautiful Durham.
I couldn't have thought of better hosts for my first days in Durham. Helen and Brian are very kind, caring and open to discussion. They were a precious help for me, who didn't know Durham at all.
The bedroom was perfect, with tourist information, tea and biscuits.
Definitly a pleasant stay.
Staying with Brian in Durham was a pleasure. I arrived late on a Sunday night but this was all easily arranged beforehand with Brian. I got cups of tea on arrival. The room was nice and quiet. In the morning I helped myself to a quick toast and coffee. Brian was around and saw me off with directions for the rest of my journey.
Greeted and hosted warmly. Pleasant room with lots of tourist info and maps for local area. A very welcome tea tray in the pleasant room stocked with all manner of goodies. There was also a telly in the room. We shared plenty in common and Brian and Helen are very generous and friendly hosts. Thank you!
Local bus to city centre close by : journey to centre took about 15 mins.
Brian gave me a warm welcome and offered me tea and a sandwich because it was late, and drove me to my appointment in Durham AND car hire on my last morning which was very helpful and generous. The room is very clean and comfortable, bed luxurious, TV, WIFI, lots of sockets for recharging laptop phone etc., all mod cons. The cooked breakfast was very welcome. Highly recommended!
This was my first experience of airbnb, up in Durham for my son's university open day, and I found Helen to be very welcoming and friendly. The room was warm, clean and comfortable, with nice big cups for the tea! And fresh milk too. The bathroom is right next door so pretty well ensuite. The house itself is easy to get to on the number 64 bus, which runs frequently from North Street in town. When I was leaving in the morning, I saw a bus about to come round the corner and I knew it had just passed the stop, but the driver saw me and stopped for me anyway. You'd never get that in London. All aspects of the stay highly recommended.
Excellent Value For Money. A very comfortable bed in a peaceful location.
Hosts went the extra mile, I was picked up from & taken back to the train station. So much easier than relying on public transport.
Located on the outskirts of Durham the city centre is a ten minute bus ride away. The local Co-op grocery store and The Jovial Monk pub are just round the corner.
Because it really needs a guest toilet I have given this accommodation four stars instead of five.
Thank you and Helen for the hospitality. Great breakfast everyday waiting for me, a lot of tea and coffee in my room, with biscuits and cookies. Very clean house and great location to get the bus which takes 10 minutes to get to Durham, the supermarket and pub just around the corner. I will definitely stay there again if I go back to Durham. Everything is just like in the pictures!! Brian gave me a precious ride to the train station after I left the house :) that helped me a lot! Again, thank you!
I cannot recommend staying with Brian and Helen more strongly! They went out of their way to make me feel welcome and make my stay comfortable. They are lovely people and very hospitable. They even showed me around town and gave me a lift when I needed it. Excellent stay and the area is well worth a visit!
