The country house is located in my mother's ancestral village.
To get there, we can arrange for the pick up, otherwise head southeast from Marrakech towards Guemassa (take the scenic Guemassa Route 212).
For nature lovers, hikers/trekkers and those travelers passing by on their way south or east seeking to explore the traditional and deep Morocco, you would love the tranquility and the vibrance of this village on the foothills of the Atlas mountains. There are few travelers and very few expatriates living here in this hidden valley. Once you start hiking, you will only encounter sheep herds, white tailed foxes and other wildlife as well as various types of birds. There are weekly souks nearby where you can meet the natives, buy local Berber rugs, straw mats and other locally made products and handicraft or just sit down under a tent and enjoy some mint tea. The listed price includes the use of the kitchen, three rooms and living room, garden, terrace, garage and all other amenities. There are bicycles that you can use for free.
The rural house is furnished and has modern amenities. It is located 35 km south of Marrakesh with gorgeous views of mountains, hills and river beds as well as nearby olive groves and hidden valleys. Great for hiking, trekking, wildlife and bird watching. If you drive east towards the mountains through the scenic country road, there is Lake Takarkoust, 19 km away from the House. The road to Lake Takarkoust (see map attached to photos) with barely any traffic except for the occasional sheep ... rolling hills, canyons and hidden valleys, mountain views and blue skies. There is a river bed teeming with wildlife and birds. Great country for trekking, horse riding and exploration. Ancient Berber village with centuries old irrigation system (Khattarat) and the remnants of old dwellings. In the nearby Sunday Souk you can get some good bargains and meet the natives from the various villages and towns of the region. Nearby village center (Larba'a Frouga / Guemassa) has taxi and public bus stops, several stores and cafes, a gas station, a mechanics' garage, a pharmacy and a clinic.
The house has two bedrooms downstairs and a large room upstairs. The listed price includes the whole house including the large room upstairs (with long Moroccan couches with dual usage both as a living room and a bedroom for several persons). The upstairs room has a dome and provides 360 degrees views of the mountains and the village). It gives access to a large balcony. There is also a large terrace upstairs with a day bed and rugs where one can relax and enjoy the scenery and the tranquility of the place. The house has one full bath with a bathtub, 2 toilets, a kitchen area and a living room. Large beautiful garden. Amenities include electricity, hot water, refrigerator and tv. Wireless internet (3 G) and mobile phone networks are available. Large garage for 2 vehicles. There are bicycles that you can use for free.
The property has also a well. A Cook is available for a small charge and so is a guide/driver if you need one but you need to make reservations in advance.
If interested in long term house rent, we can offer a special (discounted) price.
Marrakech international airport is 40 minutes away and located right on the scenic road to Guemassa (Regional Route 212). Nearby roads will take you to famous and interesting towns Essaouira and Agadir on the Atlantic ocean (1.5 hour drive each way), and to Marrakech on a scenic road for around 35 minutes, to beautiful Lake Takarkoust which is 19 km on a scenic country road. Let's start by saying that communication before and during our stay was first class. Ahmed is a kind and considerate host and left the impression that he genuinely wanted us to enjoy our holiday. He replied promptly to all our questions and was quick to put in place any requests we made (a trip to a supermarket on the way from the airport recommended).
We found the house and grounds lovely and the views exactly as pictured in the listing. The Atlas mountains are breathtaking.
We were met at the airport by Samir who was waiting for us despite a delay in passport control. He brought us to the house and ensured that we were orientated before he left. The following morning he arrived, by arrangement, and drove us to local shops. The situation of the house is somewhat isolated; you can't just walk out of the door to a shop or restaurant and visitors need to accept the need for transport arrangements. That said, Samir or his father were very willing to assist and were equally friendly and keen to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. We used their driving/guiding services several times and truly felt hospitality and kindness.
As with previous airbnb stays, we are staying in a home rather than a purpose designed and equipped tourist facility which (for us) presents overall advantage. As indicated above, guests need to be aware that they are in a fairly remote position and bring realistic expectations around that. That said, we liked the house and gardens very much and loved afternoons on the balconies. Lacking transport, you will need to create your own entertainment in the evenings.
Overall, I would recommend the house to you and, as already suggested, found Ahmed to be the most considerate and diligent of hosts.
We loved our stay in the village - even when we arrived very late, we were welcomed by Ahmed's brother and wife for tea. The house was exactly as we wanted and expected. It was incredibly lovely to have views of the mountains from the terrace where we spent most of our days during our stay. Before our arrival, Ahmed promptly followed up with queries on a cook and driver, and also recommendations for places to travel within the Marrakech region. Ahmed communicated on days when we were with the driver, which was very helpful as we didn't speak French or Arabic. I would recommend to be very clear on an itinerary - we only had a rough idea of what we wanted but as we needed a car/driver, we found it was challenging to communicate on days when we had not planned in advance. This would be easily overcome if you speak French/Arabic. The break was definitely what I had expected in travelling to a place like Morocco. Thank you to Ahmed and his family for their hospitality.
We have just come back from a three weeks` holiday at Ahmed`s house and are still thrilled by the experience. The house suited our requirements perfectly with plenty of space in- and outdoors, a lot of atmosphere, fantastic views of the Atlas mountains from the terrace. Everything was as described (only exception: no internet networks) and in best working order (hot water, shower, gas oven, washing machine). The e-mail-communication with Ahmed in the weeks before was perfect, too: Ahmed answered our mails without delay and for us it was helpful that we could communicate in English.
Ahmed`s mother, who lives nearby (5 km), gave us a very warm welcome, although it was almost in the middle of the night when we got there from the airport. Whenever we had a question, we could ring her and got an immediate answer and support.
The village of Ait Abdoullah is very scenic and absolutely calm: apart from the occasional moped the only sounds you hear is the call of the muezzin, the cobbling of the sheep passing by, the beautiful singing of the birds and the rustling of the palm trees in the wind.
There are a couple of shops in the village, but for serious shopping of bread, vegetable, fruits, dairy products you have to go to the next junction 4 km away. We usually took the car, but it would be nice to have a bike to cover the distance. This is the only possible improvement we could think of; maybe Ahmed can get a bike for the use of future guests.
The local people always greeted us very friendly, whenever we went for a walk. We even had some really heartwarming encounters, which showed that you do not really need a shared language to communicate.
As Ait Abdoullah and the nearby places are not touristy, you can`t expect people to speak foreign languages. We made the experience that many people only know a couple of French words and phrases. Shopping sometimes took its time, but in the end we usually got what we had been looking for.
We had a great holiday and can only recommend the place when you are interested in getting an idea of rural, non-touristy Marocco.
We just had a great experience at Ahmed's place. Not too far from Marrakech but still out of the way. If you look for a well deserved rest and atmosphere this is the place for you.
Ahmed - though far away - called in on us to check whether everything went as we pleased and if he needed to take care of something. His mother was very welcoming too and offered us her hospitality as well!
Our son had a great time with the local kids playing soccer and showing him around.
The house is abundant in atmosphere, the terrace is great, the view of the Atlas magnificent. Great for hiking. We did the cooking ourselves with stuff from the local shops, breakfast in the still baking december sun on the roof. We'll definitely return!
