Welcome to Juniper House! We designed our backyard guesthouse to be a bright, cozy loft, full of sunlight, exposed wood, tasteful furnishings and colorful finishes.

Enjoy a private, 600-sq-ft space with an outdoor patio in a quiet, close-in Portland neighborhood, just blocks from light rail and within walking distance to a wide variety of great restaurants and watering holes. Perfect for couples and longer stays.

The space
Built in 2018, our guesthouse offers comfortable living in a small space, with special attention to craftsmanship, aesthetics and environmental responsibility. Inside and out, you'll find sustainable elements such as the exterior juniper siding, sourced from small mills in Eastern Oregon's rural communities, to a two-story wall clad with Douglas fir lumber salvaged from our old garage.

Here's a rundown of what you'll find in each part of the house:

LIVING ROOM
French doors lead into a light-filled living space. Transom windows and skylights built into a vaulted ceiling bathe the space in light. A handpainted floral mural adds fun and color to the space. Relax on a comfy sofa or the chair in the reading alcove. In warmer months, open the french doors and the sunken front patio is an extension of the living room.

KITCHEN
A full-size GE gas range and Whirlpool microwave make it easy to cook from scratch or reheat your restaurant leftovers. Stocked with essentials: coffee, tea, oatmeal, sweeteners, olive oil, along with a selection of condiments (mayo, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, etc) and spices (dried basil, cumin, coriander, etc). High-quality knives, plenty of pots, pans and cooking utensils, and a dishwasher to save clean-up time.

We provide whole-bean coffee (and packaged tea) and a Chemex and French press to make it. Or visit one of six coffee shops within a 10-minute walk; the nearest (The Stacks) is just three blocks away.

BATHROOM
Hidden in the reclaimed wood-clad wall is a door to a wallpapered bathroom with earth-tone finishes and and a bright, garden-like feel. There's a fully tiled shower, a linen cabinet with plenty of towels, and a long shelf behind the sink to accommodate all your toiletries.

BEDROOM
Palm fronds and flowers are the backdrop to an upstairs sleeping alcove with a queen-sized bed, a 10-inch memory-foam mattress and comfy bamboo-lined pillows. There's a closet with a washer/dryer and another for your belongings, in addition to a two-drawer dresser.

OUTDOOR SPACE
During warmer months, enjoy your morning coffee on a private sunken garden patio, lined on one side by plants including a Robust Green Juniper, a Japanese red maple and golden bamboo, and on the other by jasmine vines climbing a wooden fence.

Guest access
You'll have access to the entire guesthouse and its front patio.

Other things to note
There's no TV, but there is a wireless speaker and Wi-Fi sufficient to stream to your devices.

In the sleeping alcove upstairs, head clearance around the queen bed can be tight for tall guests.

No smoking or vaping of any substance is allowed on the property. Also, please refrain from using strong perfume or fragrances during your stay. These can be extremely difficult to get out.

Neighborhood highlights

The guesthouse is set back from a quiet street in a neighborhood with quality amenities: within a 10-minute walk you'll find a New Seasons Market (Portland's best local grocery chain), multiple coffee shops (the closest just three blocks away), and a plethora of restaurants and watering holes including Mio Sushi, Milk Glass Market (lunch takeout), Backyard Social (upscale bar), The Old Gold (pub grub), La Bonita (Mexican), Spitz (Mediterranean Street Food), Atomic Pizza, and a couple of bars.

We're also a half-block from a designated bicycle boulevard, and four blocks from a light-rail stop that will take you downtown in 15 minutes. The Mississippi Avenue and Alberta Arts business districts are a short drive away.

The neighborhood's small commercial nodes also feature a healthy mix of neighborhood-serving commercial (bike shop, yoga studio, hair salon, mini-mart, etc). The Peninsula Park Rose Garden is well worth a visit between May and October; it's a bit of a hidden gem, even to locals.

We moved to Portland in 2000 from the other coast after realizing this was the place we wanted to call home. We love the walkable neighborhoods, support of small businesses, the food and arts scenes, the biking and transit options, and the connection to the outdoors. We enjoy meeting new people through Airbnb, both as hosts and as travelers!
