Lovely apartment overlooking jungle in leafy Santa Teresa. Perfect for animal lovers!

The Space

My apartment in Santa Teresa is available for short-term and medium-term let while my family and I are away travelling. We are happy to rent our Rio home to clean, responsible guests.

Please note that our friendly dog Clara will be present during this time. She doesn't sleep in the main apartment (her bed is in the porch entrance area) and has 24-hour access to a large wood for running around. She does not need to be walked (unless you would like to walk her!) but likes attention, so this apartment is really only suitable for dog lovers. We will leave food for her and only ask that is is left out for her, with water, every day. We are renting the apartment at well below market rate to make up for the extra responsibility.

The apartment is fully furnished with washing machine, cable TV, DVD, fast wireless internet etc, and is in an excellent location just a few minute´walk from Largo do Guimaraes, and buses to Lapa and Centro pass by the apartment.
The apartment overlooks a small patch of jungle and has a huge balcony(with barbeque) visited by monkeys and hummingbirds , as well as a large living room with TV, lots of books in English and Portuguese, guide books and DVDs. There are two sofa beds - one double and one single - in the living room, which has a ceiling fan, and the bedroom has air conditioning and a comfortable large double bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers, full-length mirror etc.

The kitchen is fully equipped, the bathroom has a good shower with hot water, and there is a porch with hammocks.

Right next to the apartment you will find a pizzaria, an organic cafe and deli, convenience store, and two excellent bars (Bar do Bonde and Mike´s Haus). There is a supermarket just a few minutes´walk away. The location is safe and tranquil but very well connected by public transport - buses and combis for Centro and Lapa pass by 24/7 and there is a taxi rank just round the corner.

Prospective guests, please note that, while this is a nice, well-equipped apartment in a great location, it is not purporting to be a luxury hotel and it is certainly not in the luxury price range. If you want a really excellent budget option, this is the place, but if you are looking for first-world luxury unfortunately you won't find it in Rio at this price range!

Guest Access

Guests have access to all the house facilities - washing machine, fully-equipped kitchen, wifi, cable TV, DVD Player, balcony and barbeque.

Interaction with Guests

Guests have the privacy of their own apartment, but I am quick to respond to any queries by email. For longer stays I will have a friend on hand to take care o any issues that might arise (such as lost keys).

The Neighborhood

Santa Teresa is known as the artistic heart of Rio. Although located just minutes from the city center and the lively nightlife of Lapa, it has a 'small village' charm and visitors will quickly feel at home. There are pleasant bars and restaurants right next door to the apartment, (email hidden)ly drinking and dining scene just 10 minutes' walk away. Cobbled streets, colonial mansions, beautiful views and a bohemian vibe are all part of what makes Santa Teresa unique.

Getting around

Buses for Lapa and Centro stop right in front of the apartment building, and run every few minutes. By bus it is just a few minutes to Carioca metro station, which offers quick access to the beaches and other sights such as the Maracana stadium. The Aerocoop taxi firm has reasonably-priced taxis from the international airport (other firms are more expensive).

Other Things to Note

Future guests, please remember that Brazil is still a developing country and First World standards generally don't apply. Internet can sometimes crash and take a while to come back, power cuts can happen in stormy weather. This is Brazil!

  • Four of us stayed here for three weeks during the World Cup. The host Lucy is very knowledgeable and helpful with lots of good advice. The neighbourhood, Santa Teresa is a wonderful area with good bus service, good shops nearby, fascinating buildings, friendly people and an interesting history. The apartment is a good size but wasn't as bright and clean as the website photos appear and the couches are not as shown. The Internet wifi went down but Lucy resolved it within a day. The dog Clara is a darling. She is very good company, good fun and is very easy to care for. The deck out back over the jungle is great and having the monkeys eat from your hand is a thrill. The apartment is very good value for a city with very expensive hotels. Get into the bohemian spirit of Santa Teresa and you will really enjoy your stay. Thank you very much, Lucy.

    Response from Lucy:

Thanks for looking after Clara! I will take up your issues about sweeping with the cleaner. Clara had been having daily medicinal baths - but as soon as she runs outside she needs another one!

  • We loved this apartment in tranquil area of Santa Teresa. The garden , the terrace and the animal life with monkeys in the trees and their lovely house dog Clara made the visit excellent. They bought food for us and left some things to eat, and were very helpful and quick in responses. Santa Teresa was only difficult to live in for one reason: transportation, specially during carnival, but outside that period it´s a perfect spot in the very urban and hectic city of Rio Janeiro to relax in, quite a village atmosphere really. I can highly recommend the place! We miss you Clara many hugs Jens and Dani

    P.S. Pas de problème d'insectes!

A wonderful experience! The apartment is in conformity with the description. I felt home during this month! Clara (the dog) was good company, easy going and very protective! The neighborhood of Santa Teresa is just beautiful and buses are very present. Due to its location, the property is quiet and cool. A pleasure to return there after busy days, or busy evenings! I definitely recommend this apartment!
P.S. No bugs problems for me!

  • The apartment was as described. We had no problems with anything and Lucy and her partner were very prompt to reply the few times we contacted them.

Would definitely rent from Lucy again, we had a great month while living in their home.

  • We spent a wonderful 2 months in Lucy's flat in Rio :-) Being in Santa Teresa was lovely; besides being a wonderful neighbourhood full of restaurants and bars, being outside of the standard tourist zones of Leblon/Ipanema/Copacabana helped us explore the rest of the city much more.

The apartment itself is spacious, with a great terrace for hanging out in the back, and was clean. Lucy was great about responding promptly to any questions we had, whether about the flat or Brazil/Rio in general.
There was a mix-up about our arrival date, but Lucy generously offered us a discount which made up for the inconvenience.

One note, getting taxis to go down from santa teresa can be a hassle--it's best to have a few taxi companies' numbers if you use them frequently. The buses are cheaper and just as good though!

Also, previous reviewers have commented about bugs in the flat. We did have some, mostly mosquitos, wander in from outdoors, as expected when there is a patch of tropical forest out back, but no more than that. We didn't spray daily as was recommended, just every 2-3 days, which turned out to be enough.

Overall, we had a great time and would love to come back someday :-) Lucy is very generous and easygoing--we were happy that the end of our stay in Rio was extended by a few days so we got to meet.

  • Three nights into our planned one-week stay, my wife and I left this apartment to stay in a hotel. We saw several roaches, despite having sprayed the apartment quite a bit the previous two days. We didn't feel the apartment was up to the standard we expected. Lucy's response was to insist that her partner had told us we needed to spray frequently to keep the roaches at bay (actually, he had not) and to generally disclaim responsibility. No refund for those four nights was offered. Her emails insisted that it is a common problem in Rio, but of all the wealth of written information about the apartment, the neighborhood, and the city provided before arrival, nothing Lucy wrote would've warned us we had booked an apartment where it was likely we'd encounter lots of pests. Had we known that, we would've booked a different apartment. Out of a dozen airbnb experiences on multiple continents, this was our first negative one--I hope when others book this apartment in the future, they are better appraised of what to expect.

    Response from Lucy:

Roaches in Rio are common, can fly, and are not a sign of dirtiness or an infestation. The apartment overlooks a patch of tropical jungle, which attracts visitors ranging from monkeys and giant butterflies to bugs. These guests stayed at the height of Brazilian summer, when the trees teem with wildlife. We leave plenty of sprays to keep bugs at bay but some will still make their way inside from time to time. Most travellers to tropical countries are already aware that bugs come with the territory, and our house manual makes it clear that it is necessary to use the sprays and plug ins provided. My advice for travelers with an abject fear of creepy crawlies is to look for somewhere that doesn't have a balcony opening onto tropical jungle!

  • Really nice stay; Santa Teresa is a great neighbourhood - good places to eat and drink and not too far from Gloria/Lapa if you need to get the tube.

We also filled up the humming bird feeder - the came everyday and fed the monkeys who were a little more ellusive but came down the tree when a banana was in view.

Lucy is really helpful and they have quite a few quide books just in case you need some inspiration.
