This space is our home. We love it so much that we want it to be your home too!
Before you check-in, let us know what we can do to make you feel most at home.
While you’re visiting, it doesn't matter what time of day or night, if you need something in order to be comfortable, just send us a text and we’ll always do our best.
This room is located on the third floor of the house. It's the largest and most private room of the listings. The bathroom is located across the hallway.
This house is special because of the wonderfully interesting guests, coming and going, and of course the family (us!) that's usually around in some form. It's always full of people, sometimes long term, sometimes short term, but always there for a purpose. Whether for academic reasons, a wedding, vineyard, a concert, residency interview, to explore, in route to another place or moving to Charlottesville, the people who have stopped off here make it a beautiful, ever changing, space.
We consider our home an artful home. We constantly are changing the space to inspire and support our goals and aspirations. We take an active role to use recycled and repurposed supplies in our project and are always working toward the goal of living a sustainable lifestyle. Our home is a wonderful reflection of our family. It's a fun house with lots of color, books and space to entertain. Anything we have is for your use- read the books, cook in the kitchen, entertain your friends.
You will find artwork on the walls created by "Gwandma" (Amanda's Mom) who is a fiber artist, bent on finding a re-purposed use for any and every thing! You will also find paintings, drawings, notes, and pictures from Tim, Savannah (our 8 year old daughter) and Amanda's travels and art experiments. Feel free to ask us about what you find or see. We encourage following curiosity wherever it may take you!
Finally- I'm repeating the first part of this message, because it's really the MOST important to us. Whatever you may need to make your stay more comfortable, please, just ask. It doesn't matter what time of day or night, our purpose really is to make your stay as welcoming as possible (and then some)!
Located 5 minute walk to the Corner and UVA, 5-7 minute drive or 15-20 minute walk to the Downtown Mall.
Our house is your house: washer and dryer, common areas (living room, dining room, kitchen). There is a large front and back deck for you to relax on and soon a garden and renovated backyard.
If you need a ride somewhere, let us know (with a polite amount of notice), we have a car and are happy to give ya one. If ya need a bike, we have three adult bikes and a 20" kid's mountain bike.
Interaction with Guests
We love our home and spend a lot of time in it and are an active family. We won’t intrude on your privacy in any way- but if you want to chat or hang with us, we’re around and you’re always welcome. We love to cook and bake and spend a lot of time in the kitchen (and love to share). You will quickly notice the art and books around and there is usually some sort of project underway.
Let us know if you need anything at all before or during your stay, we love to do anything we can to make you feel at home!
Note on Pets: One of our dogs is going on 11 years old. She's fine with adults, but not predictable with kids. Please instruct kids, if you have 'em staying with us, not to pet Lady. The other pup, Sandy, is fine and will just lick your face off if you'd let her, but we don't like to take risks with Lady. Our cat Butterscotch come and goes and tends to want to cuddle with guests more than us, just a fair warning :)
Those with allergies, be advised. We try to keep the cat out of the rooms, but again, he loves our guests, it's not always easy!

Friendly neighborhood. Across from school and large field we like to kick a soccer ball around in and let our dogs run about. Walking distance to grocery store, local brewery tasting room, restaurants, library, coffee shop, playground, park, etc.
3 blocks from bus stops on Preston, on one side, and Main Street on the other. Walkable to UVA and restaurants on Main St. or Shenandoah Joe's (best coffee!) and the Three Notch'd Brewery on Preston. Two bikes available upon request and we’re happy to provide rides if you plan ahead with us (to and from airport, train station, or anywhere, generally, you need to get to).
However, due to Amanda's job in Richmond, we can only offer rides on weeknights and weekends.
Other Things to Note
We have two bikes available if you'd like to borrow them.
We are also happy to pick ya up and drop ya off from the airport, train station, game, bar, or whatever you may need...just plan ahead with us so we can make sure we're available.
If you're bringing a pet and need us to help in any way, let us know. We are happy to walk, play or feed your little fuzz balls.
Smoking outside is okay, not inside.
Dinner party, for example, is okay. Kegger, not so much. :P
The Tolkas were super welcoming and easy-going. All details were clearly emailed before arriving and I had no worries about how to get there/where my room was, etc.
Very close to downtown restaurants/shops and easy to get to things.
The room is bigger than it looks in the picture! Very airy and sweet.
It was a lovely, comfortable stop on my tour. Would definitely stay here again.
P.S. Sandy the dog was a great host, too!
The Tolkas are super nice and relaxed folks! The place was clean and very comfortable, I would totally recommend staying with them to anybody! Thank you for everything!
Amanda and Tim and Mom Terri were lovely people. Their home is fun and very artsy. Lots of stuff to look at and enjoy. The room was lovely and just as the pictures show. I was grateful they allowed me to keep my triathlon bike in the house for my rae the next way. We had a litte trouble finding some things in the kitchen - paper towels and/or sponges, silverware at first (figured out it was on the island after a long scour of drawers which felt invasive and uncomfortable) and coffee in the AM. there was a Keurig but no coffee that we could find with which to fill it. We were up early and didn't want to disturb them, but we were dying for a little juice before we hit the road.
Amanda and Tim were fantastic hosts, welcoming me on my arrival, and making sure I had everything I needed for my early turnaround the next morning. Walking distance to downtown and the train station make for great outings; the spacious, bright room to come back to a great comfort. Looking forward to being able to stay again, and for longer!

About the Host, Amanda & Tim
I'm Amanda and am usually booking for both myself and my husband, Tim. We travel a lot together and often have our daughter Savannah (8) and our other two daughter (canine form), Sandy and Lady Godiva as well as our cat, Butterscotch. We love taking random road trips- we've driven from Charlottesville, VA down the coast to Savannah, GA and over to New Orleans on a whim before! We just began traveling internationally together for our honeymoon! He's been to over 30 countries and can speak 4 languages (Spanish (fluent), Portuguese (fluent), French (nearly fluent- I say he is, he is humble), Italian (nearly fluent).
I work, full time, on our 5 bedroom house to keep it constantly changing, it's my living work of art, my home and family. I'm perpetually trying to figure out what to do with the outdoor space, love to be creative in the kitchen or just be in the kitchen (I just tend to end up in that room), cuddling with our kids and being a hostess to our Airbnb guests!
Tim is a freelance consultant, journalist, editor and English teacher who also works at home and loves the company of our Airbnb guests for good conversation over coffee or wine. We love books, they surround you in our living room and I don't think there is a room without one! Our favorite authors are Lawrence Durrell, Ranier Marie Rilke, Henry Miller, Italo Calvino, Alessandro Baricco, Robert Louis Stevenson, and D.H. Lawrence (new discovery)just to name a few. We love music, from jazz to electronic and have just started collecting vinyl. You'll notice art surrounds you in our home, either on the walls or in progress...we always are venturing into a new creative endeavor!
We'd love to have you stay with us. We're an active family and we love company, but are happy to guard your solitude if you'd prefer more alone time whiles staying with us. You might not always catch us at home, during your stay, as we will hopefully be traveling often, but we'll always do our best to make you feel at home.
We hope to see you soon!
