About This Listing
Greetings from San Francisco! I love to welcome people into my home! Please make it easy for me to say yes by carefully reading my ENTIRE LISTING, and including ALL of the information I've requested before sending an inquiry.
San Francisco Short-Term Residential Registration Number STR 93
Possession of a San Francisco Short-Term Rental Registration Certificate certifies that the registration certificate holder has agreed to comply with the terms of the San Francisco Short-Term Residential Rental Ordinance (San Francisco Administrative Code 41A). This ordinance does not require an inspection of the unit by the City for potential Building, Housing, Fire, or other code violations.
THE LARGE MASTER BEDROOM features a queen bed with luxury linens, down blanket, and fluffy down pillows. An armoire hides the TV; a vintage rosewood dresser and spacious closet will hold your clothing. Guests appreciate the table and chairs set up next to large windows with views of the Pacific Ocean, providing a lovely private place to enjoy a cup of coffee, or work at your laptop. Your private bathroom, although somewhat small by American standards (but very common European-size), has everything you need, and is very clean.
As you can see from my reviews, many first-time Guests have enjoyed my home. Here's how to be accepted:
• Be Verified. It takes just takes a few minutes. Trust and transparency are keys to success here. It is important that I know who is staying at my home with me!
• Have a completed Profile that tells me about yourself. (Some Hosts won't even consider people new to Airbnb.)
• Have a clear photo of your face on your Profile before sending a booking request.
• Include what your plans are during your stay (sightseeing, visiting family, attending a conference, etc.). The hospitality I am offering is best suited to Guests with daily activities planned.
• Include reassuring comments about how you will treat my home with respect.
• Let me know you've read the House Rules, and that they are agreeable to you (this is a must).
• My home is not set up to accommodate children. Some Hosts have kid-friendly, family-style homes, with toys, and safe areas for children to play; my home does not. Completely not. Really really not. Please don't ask.
• We are LGBT friendly.
• Check-in is between 3 PM and 8 PM. If you have a special situation that would cause you to arrive outside of these hours, please advise me *before* you submit a Reservation Request. Check-out is by 11 AM, and is not flexible, as we must have adequate time to prepare for incoming Guests.
• SECURITY DEPOSIT: Please note that Airbnb does NOT charge Guests this amount, you are NOT paying this up front, so a security deposit should be absolutely no deterrence to anyone. The Guest is never billed any of it except for what they do in damage.
• You're welcome to make coffee and tea, which is provided. Kitchen usage is limited to light food preparation (making a salad or sandwich), and use of the microwave (to reheat leftovers you've brought home from a restaurant, or heat-and-eat food).
• Parking is a rare commodity in SF. I encourage Guests not to rent a car while they are in SF. Public transport is very good, it's a very walkable city (hills notwithstanding!), parking is a nightmare if and when you are able to find a spot, and there are ride-sharing platforms such as Lyft and Uber.
That said, I may be able to offer driveway parking for one small or mid-size car by prior arrangement. Larger vehicles will not fit. Please park in the space to the right, so that you do not block access to the garage at any time, day or night. Please be sure your car is parked as far forward as possible; it is illegal for your car to hang over or obstruct the sidewalk, and you may be ticketed and/or towed.
Interaction with Guests
I cannot stress this enough: The best Guest-Host interactions come from clearly understanding what a listing offers, and what behavior is expected. When you check the "I accept" box when submitting your Reservation Request, you are reaffirming that both you AND your travel partner (if applicable) have read this entire listing at least once, and agree to its terms.
If you are looking for absolute quiet, this may not be the right place for you. We are sharing a house in the middle of a large, metropolitan city - not a Zen Retreat. Some days are peaceful: others not so much! If you're accustomed to city living and urban noise, you'll be just fine here.
The Inner Parkside/West Portal neighborhood is on the southwest side of the city. We are 2 miles (3.5 km) from the Pacific Ocean, the San Francisco Zoo, and Golden Gate Park.
West Portal Avenue has a quaint village-type atmosphere, offering bistros, bakeries, coffee shops, taverns, antique shops, galleries, wine bars, progressive toy stores, boutiques, and a movie theater which shows first-run films.
San Francisco has a wealth of public transit options, including buses, light rail, historic trolleys and, of course, its cable cars!
The L/Taraval streetcar stops on our corner, and will connect you to the Castro District, Civic Center (San Francisco Symphony/Opera/Ballet, etc.), Chinatown, Union Square, the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf. The #28 bus, located on 19th Avenue, takes you through Golden Gate Park to the Golden Gate Bridge in about 12 minutes. The cost is $2.25, and exact change is required.
Other Things to Note
PLEASE BE PUNCTUAL! Delays happen. A good Guest sends updates. If you find yourself in heavy traffic, or your flight is delayed, please send me a message. Arriving hours later than we agreed upon because you decided to stop for dinner, or to visit a local landmark, is inconsiderate. My home does not have a 24/7 Reception Desk!
WATER CONSERVATION, RECYCLING, AND COMPOSTING
California is struggling in the fourth year of a devastating drought. The Governor has imposed emergency regulations that require communities to cut back greatly their water usage. You can help by limiting your showers to five minutes or less, and not running the tap while shaving or brushing your teeth. Put cups and glasses in the dishwasher instead of washing them by hand. Making water conservation a part of our daily life, and using water more efficiently at our homes and businesses, is now more important than ever! Care for natural resources everywhere you are in the world. Some people don't want to be energy conscious or responsible when they're on vacation. If you are one of these people, please do not book! Frankly, we are only willing to welcome guests who will actively help us save water, and keep within the regulated limits.
It is your responsibility to read these rules before submitting a Reservation Request, and to be aware of and follow all of them throughout your stay at my home.
* NO VISITORS
For the safety, comfort, and security of everyone, only those Guests whose names have been provided in advance as part of the reservation will be permitted to enter the premises.
* WATER CONSERVATION
SHOWERS MUST BE LIMITED TO FIVE MINUTES OR LESS. Even better: please consider skipping a day. California desperately needs everyone's cooperation to conserve water!
* NO SMOKING
In the case of violation of these first three important house rules, the reservation will be immediately terminated, and all fees forfeited.
* QUIET HOURS are observed between 11 PM and 8 AM.
* NO SHOES
Please remove your shoes upon entering the house. Socks, slippers, or bare feet are all good with us!
Guests sometimes book places that aren't suitable for their needs, because the price is right or the location is right. Please include the word "ALCATRAZ" in your inquiry, to show me that you have read this entire listing, that you understand and agree, and would make an ideal guest!
From Jul 1 - Aug 31, 2015 the minimum stay is 3 nights.
En-Suite bathroom: it's small, but it's all yours, and very clean! Towels, soap, and hair dryer provided.
Alexina was a wonderful host! This being our first experience with Airbnb, it couldn't have been any better! The room and private bath were perfect for our little weekend get away! Great location and excellent host would definitely recommend.
Alexina home was exactly as she describe it! Also very warm, clean and neat! She is a lovely person. The neighbouhood is perfect to know another part of SF...in our way we passed though Twin peaks and we enjoyed the views a lot! Thank for everything Alexina...hope we could come back to SF one day!
The whole experience was great from beginning to end. Alexina was very responsive to my emails and texts and was flexible about check-in times with my plans changed at the last minute. She extend a warm welcome with oranges, chocolates and water, and we had a great chat about our mutual love of history before I turned in for the night. The bed was SUPER comfortable. (If it wasn't a business trip, I would have stayed there the whole day.) The neighborhood is great and the room is just as advertised -- spacious, super clean, well-appointed, and very safe. I would definitely stay with Alexina again!
The room is exactly as lovely as pictured! The location is wonderfully convenient to San Francisco's excellent public transportation system. The neighborhood is a safe, quiet, residential area that has the feel of a suburb. It is only a short distance to the ocean, and a few blocks away is Sushi Raw - the best sushi ever! - and other restaurants and shops. It takes a bit of travel to get to tourist destinations, but the Muni is everywhere, and Alexina is ever-ready to provide tips and directions. The Muni rides were worth coming home to a safe, clean home.
Alexina clearly takes joy in hosting. She set out clementines and chocolates as a greeting, and provided coffee and tea as well as cupboard and refrigerator space for our use. Her generous and kind spirit was evidenced by her offering us a jacket from her own closet when the weather was colder than we expected! She welcomed us into her home, which she shares with her adult son, Andrew, whom we did not have the pleasure of meeting. Although we didn't speak with her often because of our busy schedules, it seems she enjoys visiting with her guests who want that sort of interaction while at the same time respecting our privacy. Staying with Alexina has the feeling of visiting a long-lost relation.
The care that Alexina takes of her home is evident in the perfect presentation of the room. She provided maps and toiletries and a strong reliable WiFi signal. Every detail she could include, she has. We also greatly appreciated knowing that Alexina is renting through AirBNB fully legally. Guests should be aware that pretty much everything is audible throughout the home via the heating vents. Of great importance to us, the master bath is truly private, as it adjoins the bedroom, creating your own lovely enclave.
In sum, if you want to be welcomed into a lovely, well-cared-for home, with a private bath, in a quiet neighborhood, Alexina provides an exceptional experience.
The staying in Alexina's home is wonderful ! The room is pretty nice and clean and the bed is comfortable,which mAke me feel like living in my own house. The site of the house is excellent because there is a lot of delicious restaurants in the Main Street which just takes me 5min walk! Finally, Alexina is so nice that she share us a lot of wonderful stories and tell us how to have a excellent tour in San Francisco ! We enjoy the time talking with her!
It was a great stay, the room was nice and spacious. Nicely decorated and a very comfy bed. Also the en-suite bathroom was very convenient. Alexina made sure we had all we need, like very nice shampoo's and there was nice fruit and chocolates on our arrival which was great.
It's a bit far from the downtown area so its best to use Uber to get to that part of the city. To get to the Golden Gate, we used the bus which was convenient and only 20 min trip.
We liked the carpool option on Uber, because we met locals for good tips around the city.
Thank you for your kind review, and for choosing to stay with us on your road trip. San Francisco is a small and compact city, so reaching anywhere downtown using public transportation generally takes 20 minutes or less, even to the farthest reaches. Ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft are also fun alternatives, and support the sharing economy!
Alexina was a wonderful host and made us feel very welcome. She has great knowledge of San Francisco and gave us some great ideas regarding how to navigate the city which was extremely helpful. Her home is very comfortable and welcoming.

About the Host, Alexina
I sing with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. My passions are history, museums, restoring vintage furniture, and reading fascinating biographies. I enjoy cooking ethnic cuisine (my favorites are from Mediterranean countries), and traveling internationally as often as possible. Favorite destinations are Florence, Italy (I go there every year for 2-3 months) and visiting relatives in Finland.
For many years, I taught English one-on-one through a unique home stay/language immersion program. Former students were Japanese accountants and bankers, a Swiss politician, a German lawyer, an Italian language school director, a Spanish public administrator, a Corsican air traffic controller, and French and Belgian teens prepping for university TOEFL exams. I'm still in touch with many of them. and have visited some of them, and former house guests in Hungary, Northern Ireland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and England.
Since 2004, I've been offering my guest master bedroom to more travelers from all over the world. It's a fabulous way to share cultures, and to be an ambassador for my native San Francisco.
I'm also an enthusiastic Airbnb guest, and have rented a room in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as well closer to home in California, and entire apartments in Florence, Italy, for several months at a time. My adult son, Andrew, has welcomed and hosted guests in my absence, and has also been an Airbnb guest in Italy twice.
