After a long drive, Monica took us in with open arms. She is a wonderful conversationalist, very pleasant person and really made us feel comfortable. the room was a good size, bed was cozy with an electric blanket and the view, you have to see it to believe it. it's absolutely stunning. Breakfast was scrumptious. We really really enjoyed our stay and wish it could've been longer.
We LOVED staying with Monica. She was not only hospitable - but stayed up late when we got in quite late our first night to make sure we got in safely. Her home is in an absolutely beautiful, peaceful area. Not much better than sitting on the patio and eating her amazing brown bread! Breakfast was excellent! We felt taken care of above and beyond what was expected.
Monica made our first night in Ireland an absolute delight. A fantastic location, a fantastic hostess, salt of the earth and so helpful. Even her homemade bread was special. Great view. Great advice of planning our travels in the Beara Peninsula and onto Dingle
Monica was great and made me feel completely welcome. The views from her house were amazing (once the rain cleared!). The house is 6km from the nearest village Allihies so it has peace and quiet in spades. And she went above and beyond anything I would have expected from my host when she offered to share her family meal with me or drive me into the village, as I had been cycling in the rain all day. Much appreciated!
Monica, thank you for taking us poor travellers in and serving us the warm tea and the best homemade flapjacks these mouths will ever eat after a strenuous journey from the Ring of Kerry (and an almost unbearable ship ride to Skellig Michael earlier that day). We took the "wrong" road into the Allihies to reach her, when you actually just have to drive to Castletownbere first, then go towards the Allihies. Monica had told us this, but since we were so exhausted, we just put in Allihies into the Navigational system and it took us the long, but beautiful way around. After texting back and forth, Monica guided us home. Monica's place is just over a big mountain overlooking the bay and an old ruined castle. The rooms were clean and spacious and breakfast was healthy & fresh with Monica's homemade soda bread, fruit salad and a variety of cereals and yoghurts. If you want to eat out, Castetownbere has a lovely Cafe Restaurant, only 15 Minutes away with the car. Without exaggeration, a major highlight of our trip was actually getting to know Monica, enjoying her stories about her interesting family, her views of life in Ireland, as well as laughing from her particular brand of humour. We were honoured that we got to stay in the home of one of Ireland's most formidable human beings.
Monica is a lovely host, very friendly and charming - and a smart person, wo likes profound discussions about a lot of topics. She has a good sense of humor. The room is large, clean and with an exceptional view of the atlantic ocean. Monica serves her guests a large and tasty breakfast and offers a lot of help. Everyone who is looking for a combination of breathteaking scenery and a very warm Irish welcome should stay at Monica's Place.
About the Host, Monica
I am a retired Primary School teacher. I love my home which is small, simple and comfortable, on the shores of the Atlantic. I enjoy travelling; I do a house swap (or two! ) each year and thoroughly enjoy the experience. Meeting people of different cultures has always fascinated me. My adult children have all flown the nest but visit frequently.
