this place has a GREAT location, you can not wish for a better one in Chiang Mai. Bert was a very helpful host, keen to answer all our questions very fast via email (he is working a lot, so we didnt really have the chance to meet him in person too much). Though the room itself is a bit low-key, and the wifi was quite poor, for us the location was the top priority and we were more than satisfied! We absolutely recommend the place.
My sister and I had a lovely stay at Bert's place in Chiang Mai. Bert and his family were extremely helpful and their place had all the amenities we needed for our short stay in addition to being very well located in the old city. Thank you for your hospitality!
This is a room on the top floor of a nice home in a superb location. The airbnb location isn't correct. The place is a couple of blocks north of the Tapea Gate on a quiet street, near the coolest restaurants in town.
The room is small, but guests have nearly exclusive access to the rooftop, a fine place to sip a sunset beer.
We loved this place and the hosts Bert, Moo, Tims and Bert's beautiful mother...who tirelessly tried to teach us Thai language.
The only drawback is the dogs that sing in a fine harmony to the 4am noise at the nearby Wat (church).. We found it charming foe about 30 seconds 1-3 times in the wee hours, then we fell right back to sleep in this very quiet area.
It was a wonderful stay. I was traveling solo, my first time to Southeast Asia and I'm a grandmother of seven. I knew I needed to be babied to get my rusty travel nerve back. My list of what I needed were five, cozy, safe, friendly, economical and good location.
Bert's home stay answered all of the five but at the end of the month I left with so much more. Bert's house is located in the old city part of Chiang Mai. The locals refer to it as the heart of Chiang Mai. When I left I had a bigger heart from all the love and attention I received. I loved his family and his delightful son and his sweet mother. That month will stay with me forever. Thanks
We stayed with Bert and his family for the month of November. They are really friendly and hospitable hosts, and the house is about as centrally–located as you could ask for, in terms of the major tourist attractions of Chiang Mai's old city. The room was clean and modern, the A/C worked very well, although many nights we just opened the windows. We had to do some work while were there, and although the wifi wasn't the fastest in Chiang Mai, it was reliable, and the one time it did go out, Bert was very quick to fix it. The only real negative thing I can think of is that every day at about 5am and 5pm, when the bells ring at the Wat across the street, all of the dogs in the neighborhood seem to howl incessantly. This woke us up almost every morning – but it only lasts a few minutes, and definitely not something that should deter you from staying here. Plus, the early morning is the best time to go out and see the city before it gets too hot – and if you're not a morning person, its no problem to just go back to bed!
We were lucky enough to visit during Loi Krathong (lantern festival) and we were invited to join Bert and Moong at a really nice riverside condo complex for a party. That was a really great evening, with an unforgettable view of the skyline of CM lit up with thousands of floating lanterns and fireworks. We also had a great pizza night in the house.
There are TONS of options for guesthouses and places to stay in Chiang Mai, but in the end, I'm really glad we chose this place – there is something fulfilling about staying with a local family, especially one as friendly as Bert's. If I return, I'd definitely try to stay here again, and I hope to meet our new Chiang Mai friends again sometime in the future!
I enjoyed staying with Bert and his family. They are lovely people and I feel very fortunate to have found such a great place to stay while I studied in Chiang Mai. The house is in a very central location and the room is comfortable. The house is modern and I felt very safe. They treated me like family.
Bert's and Moo's place was absolutely fantastic. I could not ask for a better location at the center of Chiang Mai. The house is beautifully done up and the other family members living in the house were polite and gracious. Everything met or exceeded our expectations. Bert and Moo were helpful and warm but also left us plenty of space to explore the city on our own. They also took us out for dinner at a great local steamboat/hot plate place. There were countless other little touches that made us feel very comfortable (Bert's mom lent my friend one of their bikes, they left us bottles of mineral water every morning, etc etc etc) - this place is highly recommended!
About the area, there was a great (though a little expensive) coffee place that had pretty awesome ice coffee close to the moon muang street, and a little restaurant with reviews on paper plastered over the wall that was really great for no-fuss reasonably-priced food. You go up moon muang and I think take the second left, where a wet market is, and walk till you see the restaurant. You'll see it when you see the reviews pasted on the wall.
We had an amazing stay in Chiang Mai at Bert's house. The house is located in a perfect neighborhood. Everything is close by and easy to walk to. Restaurants, laundry, massage, cooking school: everything is within a few seconds / minutes of walk. We can even use free bikes to get around town.
The room was clean. The A/C worked great (and this was a big + because it was hot). Bert's wife and son were extremely welcoming. They also gave us 2 bottles of water every day, as well as clean towels.
Since Bert is also a travel agent, he was very helpful at making calls for us (we do not speak thai), so we were able to book great day trips.
Bert even gave us a ride to the airport the morning of our departure.
We would definitely stay here next time we come to Chiang Mai. We felt at home.
Everyone in the family, including Bert's mother, was friendly. Stayed for three nights and the best bit of our stay is that Bert had initiative and was forthcoming in ensuring that our questions were answered and our stay a comfortable one. All in all, a pleasant stay and location is good as it is in the old city and yet quaint enough for a peaceful rest and sleep.
The room at the top of Bert and Moo's house is a perfect base for your stay in Chiang Mai, it's cool, clean, comfortable and quiet, but only 5 minutes walk down the side lane to Thae Pae Gate, shops, cafes, money-changers, and Sunday walking street (a must-do). Bert offered free use of a bicycle, but the old city is so compact, I could walk anywhere. The night bazaar, Warowat and flower markets were all only 15 minutes walk, and I never felt unsafe anywhere.
The cafe next door is a very pleasant little nook for breakfast, the massage place 10 mts around the corner is highly recommended, and the laundry next door to that is very handy.
Coming back to the house each evening felt like coming home, so welcome did Bert and his extended family make me feel. Sitting at their kitchen table, chatting about our respective lives and travels, being taken to their favourite cafe for dinner, with their delightful son, Thames, and receiving a hand-made gift from Bert's lovely mother made me very thankful I had chosen this accommodation.
And if you wake in the early hours, enjoy the canine chorus accompanying the temple bell. Truly wonderful!
