Welcome to Sydney!
Approx 25 Minute taxi ride from Sydney Airport to a neighborhood on the doorstep of the heart of Sydney.
We are located excitingly close to Sydney's key tourist sites and business district but free of its frenetic downside. Our relatively quiet neighborhood is a new discovery even for Sydneysiders. You are across Harbour waters from the City and Darling Harbour. Both locations are central harbourside transport hubs.
This is a heritage precinct with an unhurried atmospheric.
Your bedroom is on the ground floor close to the front door for easy coming and going.
Huge wardrobe and generous shelf space for books and/or your work.
We are keen cooks so our Kitchen is well equipped including a Leibherr fridge, Ilve stove and other useful equipment. You can even monitor television whilst cooking!
Otherwise, the area is full of cafes and restaurants both in Balmain itself or across the water in the City and Darling Harbour.
See Sydney Ferries timetables for connection to iconic places like Manly. And bus timetables for swift transport to City and Western Suburbs. Until late June 2015, Balmain East ferry is closed for upgrade but Balmain's Thames Street wharf is a simple 5 minute bus ride further away. And via the Harbour ferry you can reach the Opera House/Circular Quay in ten minutes.
Bus services are a speedy journey into the City via public transport priority lanes.
Return bus services depart from the bus stops on side of Queen Victoria Building.
Ideal for visitors without a car. Street parking if you have a car.
Owners', are frequent travellers' too..so this is a fellow traveller household.
You'll sleep well on a comfortable mattress and shower in our bathroom with a view!
We keep our bedroom locked when not in residence. A family member caretakes the house in our absence and uses the 2nd upstairs bedroom and our bedroom is their TV/loungeroom so everyone has the opportunity for privacy.
The large bathroom/laundry is up one flight of stairs and there's a downstairs toilet adjacent to your bedroom.
(When anyone books the whole house, one of the upstairs rooms, our Harbourside bedroom with double bed, wardrobe, desk and balcony is available).
Our contemporary open KITCHEN overlooks our rear deck and small Australian native garden with outdoor bbq and an outlook over Sydney Harbour. After a long day at work or sightseeing, you can relax here.
There's even a place where you can work/STUDY (outside your bedroom space) with plenty of desk room, photocopier and wireless cable internet.
Interaction with Guests
If we're around you are welcome to chat about the local neighborhood where we have lived most of our adult lives and of course, Sydney generally and Australia! We have terrific near neighbors too.
Balmain East is now one of Sydney's most desired suburbs which is ironic, as its largely terraced housing was originally the low-cost and low-life domain of sailors and other maritime workers. As a result, the neighborhood is sensationally located on the doorstep of all Sydneys key attractions and its central business hub. The suburb itself has dozens of gorgeous sandstone pubs and the local harbourside park is just a minute's walk away and includes a ferry wharf and bus stop from where you can travel Sydney's Harbour and swiftly reach the City day and night. But it's incredibly quiet for an inner city location. Safe to walk. Due to renovations next door recently, we had temporarily stopped hosting after being one of Sydney's first Air BnB hosts.
We walk alot and hardly require our vehicle. Buses and ferry services run long hours from nearby stops and into Balmain's central and sassy shopping precinct which is 15 minutes walk away. Balmain East, just 3 minutes walk away, also has a small shopping precinct with cafes, hairdresser, grocery store, hotel and doctors. Our local park is Iloura Reserve where you "own" Sydney and where there are big open grassed areas hugging the Harbour, chilrens play equipment, a basketball practice area and good shady areas for picnics.
See Transport App "Trip View" for timetables.
Other Things to Note
We have wonderful neighbors and we let them know you are staying. We have an alarm system. And, we have a regular cleaner and gardener. See Air BnB's Sydney listing "Harbourside City Home Life" for a long term rental option in Spring 2015.
When you book, we can inform you if you will be sharing with ourselves or our adult son. Thoughtful retiring times. No smoking inside or outside on our verandahs. (It is easy for you to use a large public park overlooking the Harbour within moments walk away and coffee shops within 3 minutes walk away) Your space is within a comfortable and rennovated historic Sydney terrace. It is our home and we like to keep it well maintained.
Most guests on quick visits snack at home and do the majority of their eating nearby in any number of restaurants/cafes the big park and/or local Balmain East pub called the East Village. And absolutely noone stays here who has not paid to stay in our house! You may use our well equipped kitchen for your own meals. We are foodies too! Leave the kitchen as you find it.
When you park your car, be considerate of others' and avoid parking over driveways or entrance gates to homes.
From May 2 - Aug 15, 2015 the minimum stay is 2 nights.
Downstairs bedroom. Easy exit through front door. Easy location alongside study and kitchen/lounge. 2nd Toilet same level.
Kirsty's place was absolutely prefect! It's location has got to be one of the best for reaching various places in Sydney with the ferry stop being so close!! The house itself is very homely and has lots of character which suited me and my family down to the ground!!
Kirsty's place has everything, nice bedrooms with comfy beds, a spacious and modern bathroom, washing facilities, and that lovely open plan kitchen and living space! I met with Kirsty before the trip as there had been a small issue with the 3rd bedroom which Kirsty doesn't normally rent out to guests. I was shown around the house and the thing that I liked the most was that Kirsty was very honest from
The get go and anything she thought may be an issue was quickly discussed and rectified so that both parties were happy! I found Kirsty to be a very organised and helpful host.. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and would recommend this property to anybody! I can assure you, you will not be disappointed staying at Kirsty's place!!
We rented the entire home over New Year and found it just as described in the listing. Communication with Kirsty was always easy, and we were greeted on arrival with thorough explanations of what we needed to know about the house. For getting round Sydney without a car, but also without staying in the noisy center, the location is ideal. We used the ferries every day - what a pleasant mode of public transport! I recommend a My Multi 2 or 3 card if you plan to use ferries daily for 6 or 7 days. Another plus here is the easy access to non-touristy Balmain eateries. We would stay again, and hope to have the chance to do so.
The reservation was canceled 132 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
The location of Kirsty's place is fantastic. We had wonderful walks for coffee and sight seeing along the shore; with great access via the ferry. The accommodations were very good; but as she notes the spaces are tight and with two of us there, we felt it to be fortunate that she was not there while we were there. Would recommend this place highly for a single person when she and husband are there.
We just needed a base to attend a family wedding at the Maritime Museum in nearby Pyrmont and it was ideal. Only a few minutes walk to the ferry, and two stops to Pyrmont wharf! Our very brief meeting (we were running late) with Kirsty was very informative and she was most welcoming.
It was very easy to find, the bed was comfy (though a double if you are used to a bigger bed for two!), lovely cotton sheets and bedspread, none of that horrible polar fleece now provided by hotels! The view is worthy of soaking up, plenty of interesting books to peruse and the bathroom large, clean and groovy!
We didn't eat there at all, rather doing breakfast at "Our Place" up the road at Balmain on their courtyard balcony - delicious but a bit pricey.
Highly recommended. Thanks Kirsty!
What I love about staying at Kirsty's is that it's like going home to mum and dads. I sometimes forget that I'm on a business trip when I stay there.
This place is comfortable and in a great location, close to the Balmain East ferry wharf. The neighbourhood is historic and full of atmosphere with numerous nearby coffee shops and restaurants. The views from our room range from the old industrial loading bays of Balmain round to Darling Harbour. Our hosts were welcoming and charming. We quickly felt at home.

About the Host, Kirsty
Travelled widely for work & with family! We have these 2 homes (near Bellingen and inner Sydney) where both our adult children were born. Our Bellingen Treehouse is our retreat. We have worked hard to regenerate our 13 hectare property and now enjoy a fully established rainforest environment around our house. Your fee for sharing it, helps us maintain and continue this vital regeneration work along the Never Never River and its precious water catchment. We work from home in Sydney or Bellingen, so hosting is our way to also support travellers' away from the normal hotel circuit -- as we like to travel too.
If we're home when you're visiting, we do work at night sometimes. We're average housekeepers keen on cooking and of course, cleanliness but not neat freaks! Into atmospherics! We love most music but not so much jazz/pop or country rather more R&B, Stephen Pigram and his brothers Kimberley music; indigenous artists including Gurrumul/Shellie morris/East Journey and Dan Sultan and the vibrant Mama Kin not to mention all the 60s and 70s music we grew up on!
Internationally we have lived in Italy and keep going back to visit friends and extended family. We've made films about the old Russia and books about Islam, Italy and international politics. We love to cook -- Italian and Asian our favourite cuisines but Bellingen also offers the visitor fabulous organic and home grown produce.
We are keen trackers of public and political affairs. actively supporting community's fighting inappropriate development. But our contribution is mainly to support a community's capacity and right to informed consent rather than as protestors'.
As hosts we are friendly but frankly, we work from home so we need to retreat to our desks once you're happily settled. Particularly because of working from home, we'd hate to be rude to you! So we figure it's best to be honest about this upfront. Most of our guests are independent travellers who are "over" hotels. They have work or sight seeing commitments and just need a bit of quick advice as they're in and out of our front door!
We hosted willing workers' on organic farms in The Promised Land for many years and our family loved the help and the variety of international guests and expert help. Very happy to answer questions and give you the good word on the places we fondly call home.
Suggestions on how we can improve your stay, most welcome! We aim to help families trying to keep their accommodation costs down as opposed to providing a fancy B&B service. This is possible by simply sharing our home and environment rather than running a guest house. And we can make suggestions of other accommodation where you might stay locally if you'd prefer to be totally pampered!
