The Space

Welcome to Sydney!

Sydney is made simple to explore if you stay here on the Balmain Peninsula opposite Sydney City and a short ferry ride from Circular Quay (and trainstation) and Darling Harbour which are both central harbourside transport hubs. Ideal for visitors without a car because of its close location to central Sydney and within 5 minutes walk from the East Balmain ferry service to Circular Quay and Darling Harbour.

The walk from our front door is through a large local Park hugging the harbourside (great for morning/evening exercise too). This is a heritage precinct with an unhurried atmospheric but within minutes of bustling central Sydney and its sights. See Sydney Ferries timetables for connection to iconic places like Manly. And there's a frequent bus service to City and Western suburbs from same location.

Rain permitting, one bedroom has a small private balcony for a relax overlooking Sydney Harbour to Darling Harbour/Jones Wharf/Anzac Bridge. Double Bed with desk and small wardrobe. Share bathroom with plus 2nd downstairs toilet.

Downstairs Kitchen with Leibherr fridge, Ilve stove and other useful equipment. Otherwise, area is full of cafes and restaurants both in Balmain it itself or across the water in the City and Darling Harbour.

Owners', are frequent travellers' this is a fellow traveller household in a low key inner City location on the Balmain peninsula....a bit like Brooklyn Heights!

You'll sleep well on a comfortable mattress and be close to the key sites and work centres (City & Darling Harbour) of Sydney.

Guest Access

The terrace has 3 bedrooms. We keep one for ourselves. Upstairs bedrooms have their own outdoor terraces on the upper floor. We only use our room and if you stay, you can use the 2nd room for your family or friends (see charges). So, if you book one or both rooms, you are the only guests. Our fully equipped contemporary kitchen overlooks our rear deck and small Australian native garden with outdoor bbq and an outlook over Sydney Harbour.

Interaction with Guests

We work from home but travel for work alot, sometimes weeks or months at a time. But if we're around you are welcome to chat about the local neighborhood where we have lived most of our adult lives and of course, Sydney generally and Australia!

The Neighborhood

Balmain East is now one of Sydney's most desired suburbs which is ironic, as its largely terraced housing was originally the low-cost and low-life domain of sailors and other maritime workers. As a result, the neighborhood is sensationally located on the doorstep of all Sydneys key attractions and its central business hub. The suburb itself has dozens of gorgeous sandstone pubs and the local harbourside park is just a minute's walk away and includes a ferry wharf and bus stop from where you can travel Sydney's Harbour and swiftly reach the City day and night. But it's incredibly quiet for an inner city location. Safe to walk. Due to renovations next door recently, we had temporarily stopped hosting in 2013 so our guests weren't subjected to early morning noise. But previous guest reviews from hosting in our Harbourside bedroom (double bed) are viewable. Note, the 2nd room has a queen bed and is a much larger space with balcony. Television -- our contemporary media system downstairs is located in our shared areas. The Harbourside bedroom (pictured) has no TV system. The other bedroom has a flat screen TV. Both bedrooms have working desk areas. Our place is ready to share again! In fact, we are keen to host someone long term as we'll be traveling alot later this year and next.

Getting around

We walk alot and hardly require our vehicle. Buses and ferry services run long hours from nearby stops and into Balmain's central and sassy shopping precinct which is 15 minutes walk away. Balmain East, just 2 minutes walk away, also has a small shopping precinct with cafes, hairdresser, grocery store, hotel and doctors. The local Darling street, Balmain wharf is 5 minutes walk away. See Transport App "Trip View" for timetables. You don't need a car here as you can travel to most places by public transport and swiftly and via priority bus and taxi transit lanes during peak hour times.

Other Things to Note

We have wonderful neighbors and we let them know you are staying. We have an alarm system. And, if you would like a long-term stay, we have a regular cleaner and gardener that we would include as part of your monthly fees.

  • The location of Kirsty's place is fantastic. We had wonderful walks for coffee and sight seeing along the shore; with great access via the ferry. The accommodations were very good; but as she notes the spaces are tight and with two of us there, we felt it to be fortunate that she was not there while we were there. Would recommend this place highly for a single person when she and husband are there.

  • We just needed a base to attend a family wedding at the Maritime Museum in nearby Pyrmont and it was ideal. Only a few minutes walk to the ferry, and two stops to Pyrmont wharf! Our very brief meeting (we were running late) with Kirsty was very informative and she was most welcoming.
It was very easy to find, the bed was comfy (though a double if you are used to a bigger bed for two!), lovely cotton sheets and bedspread, none of that horrible polar fleece now provided by hotels! The view is worthy of soaking up, plenty of interesting books to peruse and the bathroom large, clean and groovy!
We didn't eat there at all, rather doing breakfast at "Our Place" up the road at Balmain on their courtyard balcony - delicious but a bit pricey.
    Highly recommended. Thanks Kirsty!

  • What I love about staying at Kirsty's is that it's like going home to mum and dads. I sometimes forget that I'm on a business trip when I stay there.

  • This place is comfortable and in a great location, close to the Balmain East ferry wharf. The neighbourhood is historic and full of atmosphere with numerous nearby coffee shops and restaurants. The views from our room range from the old industrial loading bays of Balmain round to Darling Harbour. Our hosts were welcoming and charming. We quickly felt at home.

  • Great location with amazing views of Sydney! Tons of cafes and shops in the area and a quick ferry ride to the city.

Kirsty was amazingly quick with her responses and very helpful with providing information upon arrival.

Look forward to staying again on my next trip to Sydney!

  • Nice simple room in great location. Very quiet, close to ferry, with lovely harbour and city views from the little balcony that comes with the room. Its a small house with a shared bathroom, but the bathroom was always free when I needed it. Nice waterviews even from the bathroom! Kirsty was very nice and helpful. Would stay there again.

Travelled alot for work & with family but always return to our retreat overlooking a fresh water river from which we can drink, watch platypus swimming at dusk & swim to cool down in the heat of summer... rare find in the world these days! We have these 2 homes (near Bellingen and in Sydney) where our children were born. The Promised Land Treehouse is our retreat. Its where we raised our children. We work from home so hosting is our way to support travellers' away from the normal hotel circuit. It's how we like to travel. If we're home when you're visiting, we'd often be on the telephone or at the computer...and at night, monitoring news services...having said that, we're not huge TV watchers...but we do work at night sometimes. We're average housekeepers keen on cooking and of course, cleanliness but not neat freaks! Into atompsherics! We love most music but not so much jazz/pop or country. more R&B, missy higgins, john butler & gurrumul/shellie morris/east journey, mama kin and all the 60s and 70s music we grew up on! Internationally we have lived in Italy and keep going back to visit friends and extended family. We've made films about the old Russia and books about Islam, Italy and international politics. We love to cook -- Italian and Asian our favourite cuisines but Bellingen also offers the visitor fabulous organic and home grown produce, so enjoy it whilst you're here. We are keen trackers of public and political affairs. actively supporting community's fighting inappropriate development. But our contribution is mainly to support a community's capacity and right to informed consent rather than as protestors'. We travel widely and have written books on Islam and Italy. As hosts we are friendly but frankly, we're busy and we like our home so we will want to be left to our normal routines rather than feeling you need entertaining... Particularly because of working from home, we'd hate to be rude to you! So we figure it's best to be honest about this upfront. Most of our guests are independent travellers who are "over" hotels. They have work or sight seeing commitments and just need a bit of quick advice as they're in and out of our front door! We hosted willing workers' on organic farms in The Promised Land for many years. Very happy to answer questions and give you the good word on the places we fondly call home. Suggestions on how we can improve your stay, most welcome! We aim to help families trying to keep their accommodation costs down as opposed to providing a fancy B&B service. This is possible by simply sharing our home and environment rather than running a guest house. And we can make suggestions of other accommodation where you might stay locally if you'd prefer to be totally pampered!
