The house has a private veranda/living area on the ocean, a garden, and a private solarium on the beach. There is also a nice area upstairs where you can have massages and relax (the back part of the upstairs area is locked, for the owners to keep their belongings).
The compound has a swimming pool with salted water, located right behind the house, shared by the other villas (it is usually very quiet, except sometimes in Christmas time)
The guests have a kitchen at their disposal with an excellent trained cook (Italian and kenyan) who can shop for you as you wish (tips: crabs, raw fish, octopus, fish fillet, gnocchi, vegetable soups, fried zucchini, fried seaweed, chapati chocolate mousse and more). You can walk on the beach and up to the riff with low tide, relaxing in the natural swimming pools. with the high tide you can go snorkeling with a local dau (sailing boat), watch wild dolphins, walk on the long white sandy beach.

Interaction with Guests
The owners of the house are seldom there. When in the house we try to help the guest as needed without interfering. You will be told if the owner might be there or not, and you can request them not to be around if you book the whole house.
The house has few hotels on the right side, but outsiders have no access to them. The bay receives lot of tourists around November-February every year. Mainly Italians and Kenyans. The bay anyhow remains quite private and wild.

Nyumba Ya Madau - House rules and Information
1.The staff of the house is composed of 4 people: the cook, Gabriel, the waiter Mwalimu, the cleaner, and the gardener, Cornelius.
2.Gabriel should be your reference point. He will shop for you and prepare the meals according to your preferences. Delicious fresh fish can be bought from the beach daily. Seafood is bought from the market thus it should be asked one day in advance. Gabriel is an excellent cook and very versatile, he has been with the Italian family for 20 years. Agree with him on the menu and ask for his specialities i.e. seafood, spaghetti with crabs, gnocchi, chocolate mousse, fried vegetables, soups etc…enjoy !

Alice leaves in a dependence of the house and is always available. She takes care of your rooms and laundry and you can ask her to baby sit, and give her a little tip. The staff breaks after lunch for few hours and you will not see them around unless you need them.

10.The house has a private beach and the swimming pool in in the compound.
1.We have a trusted masseuse, Anastasia, and there is a massage bed in the house. I recommend the 1h or 2h massage with final facial massage with aloe (from the garden). The price is 1000 Ksh/hour, including transport. She can be called by Gabriel or by you directly, in advance.
2.The hotel nearby has a renowned spa.
1.The ocean has strong ties, every 6 hours. It is a splendid daily natural show but it needs to be known so that you can organise your activities in the beach. An updated timetable is framed in the house
2.With the low tide, you can walk up to the riff and indulge in the natural swimming pools and on the white atolls. You can also take long walks on the beach (exit the house and turn left for a quieter excursion).
3.With the high water you can have trips on a daw, ask the staff to help you locate a boat.
4.The best time to swim is when the sea starts withdrawing, the water is 1m high and calm.
1.Omar is our trusted taxi driver. He can be called anytime. The transfer from Malindi airport and town costs 1500 Ksh (2000 with the van) and it takes 20 min, and from Mombasa (phone number hidden) with the van) for around 2h.
2.If you wish to go to Watamu village (6 Km) I recommend you to take a taxi or a bodaboda outside the hotel nearby, Gabriel will help you.
1.The House is located in the southern side of Watamu, towards Mayungu village. If you come by car from Mombasa, turn right at the Watamu junction and once you reach Watamu village turn left (follow the sign for Jacaranda and Twiga, opposite direction from Hemingway hotel). Drive on the 6 km coral road. Our compound, Nuymba Baharini Village, is the last one, after Twiga hotel (local people will be able direct you). In the compound drive until the end of the road, the house is the one of the left on the beach with white bougainvillea outside.
2.There is a better road but might be more difficult to locate. On the Mombasa-Malindi road, you turn around 6 km after the Watamu Junction, at the Kijiwetanga junction (before the Bosco farm). Follow the road until the end, you will arrive right in front of Twiga hotel. Turn left and after 20 metres you will see the Nyumba Baharini village gate.

Beautiful house - maybe the most charming we have rented in 6 yrs living in Kenya. Directly on the beach with big veranda and sandy area on beach fenced in by cactus wall so kiddies can play safely while you sleep on the sunbeds. Great library, great chefs. Beach is thin and tide goes out so can't swim half the day - but this is the same for, most of the coast and there is a giant sandbar coming out from the beach we walked out and picnicked on! There is a pool but it wasn't full when we went. 30 min rough road from main malindi-watamu road...but only 3 min from there to airport. great great find.
Nyumba Ya Madau is such a gem. A big and airy house on turquoise water. The Kenyan coast is humid and it's really nice to have A/C units. Private bathrooms in all of the rooms were a huge plus too.
My family and I had a lovely week-long stay at Nyumba Ya Madau. The house staff were very kind and accommodating. As noted by many other guests, Gabriel is an excellent chef, especially if you are a fan of Italian and seafood cuisine - we ate VERY well. We also enjoyed a great grilled seafood meal at Safina, just down the beach - recommended by Benedetta. We spent a lot of time lounging in the comfortable outdoor spaces of the house, taking in the views of the sea.
We did find it a bit difficult to swim in the ocean due to the reef and the tides, but were able to go for long lovely walks at low tide. The sandbar in front of the house was especially fun for walking and exploring. The swimming pool is a shared by all of the houses in the "village", very close walking distance from the back of the house. The area is very popular with Italian tourists and home owners - I think were were the only people in the area who were not either Kenyan or Italian. The Kenyans along that part of the beach speak impeccably fluent Italian!
Benedetta has been a great host and the communication with her was excellent ,she cleared many things and re assured on many issues we had .
After a tortuous dirty dusty road track , we have arrived at Benedetta s house , we were welcomed by the staff and her very nice and lively mother who explained to us ,all the things we needed to know . The house sits in the most beautiful part of the beach ( 30 minutes from main watamu beach)has a wonderful terrace overlooking the blue sea and it s close to a couple of very good restaurants ( I strongly recommend Robbie Rasta ) . The staff takes care of the house so you don t have to worry about anything .everything is simple and back to basics which is great if you want to cut it from it all , but probably you do if you are considering Africa as your travel destination . This house and its location are beautiful. The staff were lovely and very helpful and the food was delicious. Benedetta was available on email or over the phone to help arrange things like nannies, massages and airport transfers.
We were traveling with 5 little kids, so the private fenced-in beach in front of the house was perfect for us. There is a sandbar almost directly in front of the house that was perfect for swimming and walking out on at low tide. The pool was warm and enjoyed by all of the kids and adults. It was the start of off-season so all of the neighboring resorts and restaurants were closed, the beach was completely empty, nobody was around selling things etc. This was perfect for us since we were a group of 11 and content on making all of our own fun. It was a great stay in a piece of paradise.
We really enjoyed staying at Nyumba Ya Madau - one of the most unique houses that we've ever visited. The location is excellent right on the beach and still very private and the house interior is stunning and inspiring. Hope to come back.
We had a wonderful time while staying at Nyumba Ya Madau for a long weekend. Benedetta, her mother and all the staff were very hospitable and made us feel right at home. The villa is exquisitely designed and decorated - the veranda looks out onto the beautiful blue ocean and is the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Benedetta was very helpful with organizing transportation and other activities. She had excellent recommendations for everything from restaurants, boat tours, or trips to the local textile markets in town. We had the most amazing time staying at Nyumba Ya Madau and hope to come back soon!

About the Host, Benedetta
I have been working in Sudan and South Sudan for a decade while completing my Ph.D. in Politics and International Relations at SOAS in London. I am now a happy mother and consultant in Nairobi and occasionally, less than I wish, I travel to Nyumba ya Madau and Casale della Via Francigena.
