The Space

NOTE: If your travel dates are more than 2 months in the future, please send an inquiry only, not a reservation request. I will note it down, but am not accepting bookings more than 2 months in advance for short-term stays. Same day bookings are welcome if my calendar shows availability. If you are staying longer (3 weeks or more), because you will be working or studying in San Francisco, I will accept bookings further in advance.

If you are a single traveler coming to San Francisco for an extended stay for work or school, please also consider my other listing which is priced accordingly:

My 3 room apartment is in San Francisco’s best kept secret neighborhood: The Lower Haight. This is where the locals hang out. Great cafes, bars and restaurants plus great parks within a few blocks in all directions. Centrally located, walking distance or a short bus ride to many other desirable SF locations: Golden Gate Park to the west, the Castro and the Mission to the south, Alamo Square with the famous Victorian houses and SF skyline just 3 blocks to the north and downtown to the east.

The room available for rent is a large (12x14 feet) fully furnished, carpeted bedroom with a California King bed with a down comforter, antique dresser and desk, large windows plus a large walk-in closet. I have a great selection of photography and travel guide books (I am a photographer and writer). Wifi, free local and long distance calling, towels and bedding included. Perfect for a couple or single person. (Sorry, but I cannot accommodate families with children or more than 2 people in this room. Each guest must be at least 18 years old.)

What is great about this apartment is how bright and quiet it is as it is set back from the street and overlooks the block’s inner gardens. You will have use of the sunny kitchen (with views of Mission Dolores and beyond) and share the bathroom with me and potentially another guest when the other bedroom is booked.

If you're looking for a quiet and safe place at a rate that’s the same or less than what you would pay for two bunk beds in a hostel, you've found it. Except you will have more comfort and more privacy. This is a smoke-free and drug-free house (alcohol in moderation is fine) and I expect you to honor this request.

Please fill in your profile including a recognizable picture, complete the verifications (incl. the popular social media site that Airbnb blocks me from mentioning). Then tell me about yourselves and why you are coming to San Francisco. If you are new to Airbnb and do not yet have any reviews, the information in your profile and what you tell me in your message weighs a lot in my decision. I love meeting new travelers, but I also like to know who I am inviting into my home.

Once the booking has been made I will ask to set up a brief video call, so that we can make visual contact before your arrival and answer any questions you might have.

I now have two bicycles available for rent. Explore Golden Gate park on 2 wheels or take a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. I am also making my car available for rent for day trips outside of San Francisco, (a Subaru Forester), as I work from home and do not need it on a daily basis.

If you let me know ahead of time, I can also get transportation passes for you (3 day and 7 day passes). This way you'll be ready to go as soon as you get here.

Thank you for for your interest in my listing and I look forward to hosting you!

  • I stayed at Christine's place with my boyfriend, Geoff. We had a great time. What is so amazing about Christine's place is that it is close to so many restaurants and cafes, all within walking distance. Little did I know that by staying here, I would have my pick of bars, restaurants, shops and cafes. Her place is super cozy and has the perfect amount of lighting. Christine is wonderful! When you arrive, she gives you a list of all the places within walking distances that you're able to go to. This impacted my stay in San Francisco by making it much better than expected. Christine is great to talk to and her knowledge of San Francisco is to be admired.

  • I attended a 5 day conference in SF, and was introduced to airbnb. Considering the cost saving compared to hotels, plus possibility of being able to make your own breakfast, I decided to give it a try. So I stayed Christine's place and I have nothing but good things to say about my experience. Her apartment is in a great area (my other conference colleague told me this too). The apartment looks exactly like the photo on airbnb site. Christine is a wonderful host who not only addresses apartment related query but also gives detailed tips about traveling in SF. Being a travel photographer, she also knows great places to experience. In all I had a great time, and would highly recommend her apartment to everyone.

  • Christine is a wonderful airbnb host, and the reason I prefer going the airbnb option over any other type of accomodation. She is very friendly, professional, and full of great ideas on how to get the most out of a stay in San Fran. The apartment is in a fabulous location, central to all best districts in the city, and best of all, close to some great coffee shops. The room is comfortable, quiet and spacious, and perfect for two people. I would absolutely recommend renting Christine's bikes for a day and taking a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge - Christine will show the best route so you have to tackle too many hills. Would definitely stay here again next time I am in San Fran, thank you Christine!!

  • Great location and a fantastic warm hostess!! Nice bikes for rental (15 $ a day), cheaper than the commercial bike-rentals in the city. Did not explore the kitchen but it was probably all shared. Bed and room were nice and big and only downside was the thin wall with a couple of holes against the hostess' bedroom.

    Response from Christine:

thanks for the nice review Rasmus. You probably didn't realize, but it's not a thin wall with holes, but double glass doors, like the old French-style doors behind the Klimt wall hanging. I taped the door over with black out material for privacy and to prevent light spills. The black out fabric must have loosened and thus the illusion of holes where light spilled through. I'll definitely fix that now that I know.

  • Had an amazing stay in San Francisco.
Christine was a nice host and very helpful with hints regarding the city.
Great neighborhood. Be sure to try a few of the amazing restaurants nearby...

  • We had a fantastic stay at Christine's. The place is in a great location - convenient to get into the centre by public transport, a short walk away from Hayes Valley and Lower Haight, which are lovely places to explore and eat tasty meals.

As for Christine, she was a brilliant host - extremely helpful with hints and tips for a jam-packed week, enabling us to experience the real sights of San Francisco.

We used Christine's bikes to cycle the Golden Gate Bridge, which I we would definitely recommend as a day out to anyone visiting!

Anyone wanting an easy-going, reliable and friendly host, a lovely relaxed living area right in the heart of San Francisco's diverse neighbourhoods, Christine's is the place to go.

We can't thank Christine enough for a wonderful time and we would highly recommend this listing.

    Response from Christine:

Aaawww - you two are so sweet! I loved how this whole surprise visit came together for you both and that I played a role in making it memorable for you. I loved hosting such brilliant guests! :-)

  • Hustle and Bustle - delivered! Oasis - delivered! Host, who still kind after crazy pair of Russians: loudly open & close door to restroom all night, already had a breakfast and morning foggy run and wants to chat at 8am (oh, we love jetlag - it's so productive) - delivered!

The Lower Heights area, where is apartment located is quiet by itself, but all possible perks (drug store, a lot of good eateries, transportation hops, all these colorful neighborhoods from travel guide and even a pool) is located by one-two blocks by foot.

And dear Christine even have a list of eateries (tried to cover it all - but no luck - so little time) and ready to point to another gem (Twin Peaks and Presidio on the last day in SF - brilliant walks).

Room is spacious and cozy, bed is soft, wi-fi is fast, table for writing is available.

    Response from Christine:

Definitely enjoyed "crazy pair of Russians'! Come back for the next marathon!

  • Great Location. Excellent host. Thank you very much!

  • Christine was born to host. That's what me and my husband, Lienio Medeiros, discovered staying at her lovely bedroom.

Besides from just falling in love with her and connecting immediately with her beliefs & life experience, the apartment is just what we needed: a cozy place to sleep (the bed is great, the wide windows are just amazing), with a loving friend to talk to and even some company for great wine and cheese.

    We totally recommend it.

    Response from Christine:

Aaaww Evelin - you are so sweet. I LOVED having you both and connecting with you sharing life experiences. Rio 2016 is not that far away now! ;-)

  • Warm accomodating host, amazing huge comfortable bed and a large room with plenty of space. Trees outside the window (we saw a squirrel) and lots of light make it a pleasant place to stay. Christine is very helpful re cafes, restaurants, places to visit etc and it's well worth hiring her bikes and doing the bridge crossing to Sauselito (ride through Sauselito to the Taco place on the left, colourful and wonderful!). It's Christine's home so she's there sometimes and you're sharing bathroom and kitchen (no living room), but found her happy to talk when we were but respectful and unobtrusive otherwise. Great location in the lower Haight and easy to get to buses to go elsewhere. Highly recommend!

Photographer & Writer
I am a freelance photographer and writer and endeavor to travel whenever possible, mostly teaching travel photography workshops or photographing for some project or client. I was born in Australia and moved to Germany as a kid, so I'm steeped in both cultures. The San Francisco Bay Area has been my home for most of my adult life. I love meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds and am spellbound by a good story. Though by no means an expert, wine is a big passion and has often dictated my travel itineraries. I have lived in San Francisco a long time and know it very well. If I'm around when you stay at my place I will be happy to give you insider tips, suggestions on where to go and what to do or simply chat with you over a glass of wine. If you let me know, I will even purchase a 3-day or 7-day transportation pass for you, so you're ready to go as soon as you get here. I also have two bicycles available for rent (much less than at the bike rental places and you can keep it for as long as you like). Top things to do in San Francisco: 1. Biking across the Golden Gate Bridge 2. Walking Ocean Beach. 3. Catching a dance performance 4. Exploring Golden Gate Park 5. Eating fabulous food - we are a foodie town. 6. Watching windsurfers at Crissy Field. 7. Going to one of the many bizarre or wacky events or festivals. We have a lot of them and I'm still learning about new ones! Insider tip: 1. Ride up the elevator at the de Young museum for a 360 degree view at the top of the tower. It's free. No museum admission required! 2. Walking the labyrinth at Mile Rock Beach along with the most stunning view in San Francisco.
