Located in an historic 16 unit courtyard condominium complex, this large three story town home is in the heart of the Northwest Alphabet district. Portland is one of America's few cities that can be lived "car-free" and this neighborhood is the best - forget neighborhoods with an 87% Walk Score - this one is 100%! - 4 blocks from the streetcar stop, 10 blocks the the MAX light rail, 1 block from two bus lines and a 15 minute walk to downtown. The airport can be accessed from the MAX line at baggage claim and transferred to the street car. Not to mention that Portland is America's most bicycle friendly city with hundreds of miles of bike lanes, bike parkways and cycle tracks. But if you have a car, we have an off street parking space which is a rarity in this neighborhood, just let us know you'll need the space.
Trader Joe's grocery store is one block away, Fred Meyers Supermarket (Kroger) is 5 blocks away. Cinema 21 (art movie house) is one block away along with dozens of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and boutiques. NW 23rd, only a block away, is considered one of America's best shopping destinations.
If you need a car for a day trip to the Oregon Coast, Mt. Hood, the Columbia River Gorge or the Oregon Wine County, try Zipcar, Car2Go or GetAround, hourly car sharing services in Portland with several cars parked within a block or two.
The condo was built in 1927 and features a living room, dining room and kitchen on the main level, two bedrooms and a bath upstairs and a master bedroom and bath downstairs. Both the downstairs king mattress and upstairs queen mattress are Tempurpedic, the 3rd bedroom has a double sized sleeper sofa. The common entry courtyard is one of the gems of the neighborhood and features camellias, pink dogwoods, and rhododendron. The kitchen was completely replaced in 2007 along with the upstairs bathroom. There is a coin operated laundry room in the common area portion of the basement. We have a television monitor for watching DVD's and an Apple TV (but no cable or broadcast television).
Sometimes our dates are flexible by a day or two so if it isn't available for the exact dates you need, try us, we might be able to change our schedule a little bit. We will always call you several days in advance to go over how to key exchange, parking, etc. and we have a very complete and detailed house manual.

- Please understand and respect that our home is part of a small, intimate and close-knit condominium community. Any inappropriate actions by our guests affect all of our neighbors.
- We only allow mature, responsible guests.
- This property is probably not suitable for families with elementary school-age children.
- Due to the small size of our home, you must agree to having absolutely no parties or gatherings within or on the grounds of the condo.
- With rare exception, we only accept reservations from guests that have been previously reviewed on airbnb. If you have not been reviewed, we will ask for further information, references and identification about you before we consider accepting your reservation.
- We only accept guests who have complete profiles with information about themselves and a clear photograph of you. We know that some social network profile photos are of landscapes, pets or other subjects, but that is insufficient for our needs.
- Guests must have an “airbnb Verified ID” (connected to your social networks, and scanning your official ID or confirming personal details - see airbnb website section "Verified ID" for information).
- We only accept reservations from the guests that will be actually staying here - we don't accept reservations from parents, children, friends, etc. on behalf of potential guests. Those who wish to make a reservation must be the ones actually staying in our home.
- When making a reservation, please state the number of guests, ages, relationship and purpose of the trip.
- We review all of our guests, good and bad and hope you will do the same.

Dabney and Allen's place was so wonderful! We met our friends in Portland to explore the city together all for the first time, and this apartment provided an incredibly convenient, comfortable, safe and quiet home base for our (email hidden)e neighborhood restaurants and nearby Washington Park are reason enough to choose the Northwest. Dabney made us feel right at home, a really talented host, he even provides a binder full of recommendations of places to eat and visit, along with comprehensive information about the house. We all would stay here again in a heartbeat.
wowza! staying at Dabney and Alan's was super super great, everything you need and want is right there. The house is perfect ie beds, linens, kitchen, comfortable chairs etc. the neighborhood is really nice and you can walk to everything you need...really good food and coffee, movie theater etc but it is small and quaint with lots of character. The best is that there is always a parking spot for you when you come home. This is a really nice spot to stay and Dabney was always right there by text or phone if I would have needed him. This place is the cream of the crop of Airbnb....where someone opens their home up that is full of true comfort and caring. I highly recommend them
Wonderfully engaging, Dabney and Alan, should be running a large B&B, they've got the personalities for it. Wish we could have spend some social time with them.
Everything spotless and first class. Didn't expect all the toiletries, etc., but this is our first Airbnb experience. Kitchen was extremely functional with everything we needed for serious cooking and baking, even provided spices, condiments, etc. Reminds me I forgot to replenish the coffee beans.
Outstanding, classy, comfortable decor. Courtyard as beautiful and secluded as in pictures. Even a loose-leaf binder with procedures, rules, extensive tourist materials.
The kicker was they offered to cut and install a Christmas tree for us--one of the many highlights.
A note for people who have trouble negotiating stairs: no bathroom on main level.
The Essence of NW Portland is exactly that ... historically handsome, with lots of soul and a little magic. We arrived after dark to an enchanted courtyard entry sparkling with Christmas lights, and opened the charming front door to find a beautifully furnished, comfy-cozy haven, smack-dab in the middle of the best neighborhood in Portland. You just can't do better! We've stayed in every upscale hotel in the city, and Essence NW rivals them all. If you are fortunate enough to book Dabney and Alan's house, you'll be living like a very lucky local. Dabney was a joy to work with, and we hope to be back soon!
We had a great stay at Dabney's place! Awesome location, very close to multiple bars, restaurants and coffee shops. A great place to wind down after long days of exploring Portland. Highly recommended!
This was my first airbnb stay and Dabney made everything so easy! The condo is beautiful and spacious, it has everything you need. We loved the neighborhood – it was very safe and we walked everywhere, even downtown. Dabney was very attentive and checked in on us through texts during our stay. Portland is a great destination and Dabney is the best host you can ask for. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Portland!
I want to live in this home! My mother, adult siblings and our partners all came together for a wedding in Portland and it was the perfect place to stay. Dabney's home is both charming and comfortable. The location was amazing - great neighborhood, close to everything, great restaurants in the vicinity. I highly recommend a stay here.

Great row house and a great location for a visit to Portland. The accommodation was very comfortable to stay in for a party of 5 adults. The location in Nob Hill was great for walking to nice restaurants and the downtown area.
We had considered a few other AirBnB options in Portland before choosing The Essence of NW PDX condo, and let me tell you would be crazy to want to stay anywhere else. Dabney and his home were absolutely perfect! Our group of friends and I felt instantly at home. The location was ideal with plenty to eat, drink and see right around the corner. Having a parking spot for our rental car was also paramount. The beds and chairs were super comfortable. Dabney was very easy to reach and quick to respond via email or text. Next time I'm in Portland, I hope to stay here again.
