Stoneapple Farm is a fairy-tale country cottage sited overlooking 6 acres of oaks and pear trees. Built in late the 1800s as an apple-packing house, it has 29” thick stone walls of local rock. A well-known architect visiting Julian in the 1940s saw its possibilities as a country house and re-designed the structure into the charming two-story cottage it is today. Guests from all backgrounds and all over the world are invited to enjoy the literary and local heritage of Stoneapple Farm.

The space
There is easy access to the front door of the cottage from the parking area. The backyard is fenced in for dogs. The cottage a has a large stone fireplace in a spacious living room which has lots of natural light coming in from large deep set windows. The kitchen is fully equipped to prepare meals while you are on your mountain retreat. Please keep in mind the cottage is elderly. It is cleaned after each guest visit and maintained by a handyman but it’s not a 5 star hotel. Think clean, quaint, a trip back to a simpler life, local art, vintage books and the quiet and serenity of being in the country. The upstairs private master bedroom has a new queen bed. The room with 2 twin size trundle beds is at the top of the stairs, it has no door, guests going to the master bedroom walk through this room. The air conditioner is a window unit in the master bedroom.
- A note regarding taxes...San Diego County requires that we collect a Transient Occupancy Tax which is 8%. It must be collected on or after the date of check in and not at the time of booking. You will receive a request for this payment via Airbnb. Thank you

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire 6 acres of property. We ask that all children be supervised in the fenced in dog yard at the back of the house due to large boulders that create climbing hazards to adventurous children.

Other things to note
Stoneapple is unique in its astounding library of books including classic works of literature, southwest history, natural history and psychology, with an extensive collection of cookbooks as well. Numerous works of art created by local and regional artists and objects from around the world make a visit to Stoneapple a cultural experience. Well known author and historian, Scott O'Dell, wrote his Newbery Award winning book, Island of the Blue Dolphins at Stoneapple while his wife, Jane Dorsa O'Dell, wrote the advice column "Dear Jane Palmer" in the 1950s. She lived at Stoneapple Farm for over 50 years. Stoneapple has served as a writers' retreat to many authors over the years.

Stoneapple Farm is located in the lovely Pine Hills neighborhood of Julian. It is a great area to explore on foot or by bike, although it is important to be careful on mountain roads! Keep an eye out for deer, turkeys, rabbits the occasional fox, bobcat, coyotes, lots of different species of birds, Steller Crested Blue Jays, Robins, Goldfinches and Quail. William Heise County Park is a great place to go for a hike, take kids to a fun playground, or go have a picnic, it is only minutes from Stoneapple.
