The Space

Come and stay in our beautifully converted warehouse in a vibrant, growing neighborhood in Brooklyn. Enjoy our expansive kitchen, bathroom, darkroom, ceramics studio, foundry, junkyard, rooftop and more, and enjoy the company of artists, makers, builders, and other good people. Your host, Kellam, is a Brooklyn artist, and the property always has a lot going on. A unique and awesome place from which to experience NYC.

This room is ... special. A work in progress, one of the walls is a a fabric curtain, the lime green paint job is odd at best, but that's what gives it such character. The room is large, bright, and airy, with a comfortable mattress on the floor and a small desk. It is cozy, cheap, clean, and can accomodate up to six people (3 double beds.) Ideal for 2 people though. Shared bathroom. 24/7 access to common areas. Wifi. A/C. Heat. Power outlets. Max Capacity: 6 people - 3 double beds.

With a woodshop, a metal shop, a ceramic studio, a large format darkroom, a foundry, a forge, Brooklyn Arts Studio (email hidden) workspace. Your chances of waking up to the filming of a Beyonce video are as good as coming home in the evening to live music around a fire in the junkyard.

It is alive and vital to an ever-growing community of artists and creators who over the years have seen it as and seek it out as a refuge for open mindedness, experimentation, and more than anything else, space! A rare commodity in this city.

"Move quickly through the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, down the main thoroughfare Eastern Parkway, past a conflicting intermingling of beautiful terraced homes and marred vacant buildings, and you could easily miss a modern cultural landmark. Hidden in plain sight, packed inside a shuffle of industrial architecture, is the wondrous workshop loft space."

Kellam, your host, is a Brooklyn artist and moved into the residence in 1999. He has been renovating and evolving the space ever since. Over the years, his space, projects, and art collection have grown into a force of their own. Kellam has opened the 6 other rooms in his home for short-term rental - to foster an exciting and growing community of NYC-based creatives. He lives and works on the property full-time. It is an ever-morphing community of open-minded individuals, pursuing creative agendas and projects in the NYC area.

Guest Access

24/7 access to all common areas - parlor, kitchen, bathroom, and junkyard spaces. With some notice, access to other parts of the compound - the workshop, the darkroom, etc - can also be arranged. Just ask!!

Interaction with Guests

We are friendly, but everyone has a lot going on. Each guest and person at Brooklyn Arts Studio generally has their own projects and agenda to pursue and should not expect to be entertained. Happy to sit and chat for a bit over hot coffee, but keeping to yourself is fine, too. You will be a welcome, but temporary addition to this odd and transformative space. We like our guests to feel at ease.

The Neighborhood

This is an up and coming Brooklyn neighborhood - located between Crown Heights and Prospect Heights. An old industrial district turned yuppy condo haven, you will find the area very safe and the community extremely friendly.

We are a nice walk to the Brooklyn Museum, Prospect Park, The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, The Farmer's Market. There are several bars, sushi restaurants, authentic Oaxacan joints, extremely small and expensive Italian and French places. A few of the old dives are still around as well. In short you will not starve for want of good interesting places to pass the time close to home.

Getting around

We are located 2 blocks from the Franklin Avenue C train. We are located 8 blocks from the Franklin Avenue 2, 3, 4, 5 Trains.

Other Things to Note

Journalists and bloggers staying here must announce their profession or hobby and any intentions to write about the space.

People are coming in and out of the studio throughout the day and sometimes at night. If you are a light sleeper chances are you will have no issues, but parties can happen randomly during the week, sometimes the shop is in use late. We cannot guarantee you'll have a quiet night. We believe you should always travel with earplugs anyway.

All permanent residents may work in the shop 24 hours a day. Of course we are all here, working, living, travelling together, so if there is a problem created by noise or whatever, let’s talk about it.

By entering an agreement with us and AirBnB, you are also agreeing to hold harmless myself the other guests, the owner of the property, BYG realty, and Airbnb. In staying with us, you agree to use and stay in the space at your own risk. So don’t be stupid. Don’t jump on the skylights, don’t attempt to walk on coals. There are many large tools in the shop, often odd events with explosives, workshops with the foundry and the kiln. Just be a normal smart person, and you will have a great time.

Everything you bring into this space is your responsibility to manage, track, and store. This includes luggage, clothes, toiletries, towels, and food. Please keep track of your personal effects, leaving your things in your guest room when you can and keeping your door closed. While we consider our property very secure, we are very open here. We do not have locks on guest room doors, though each guest receives a key to the property’s front gate.

It’s really not a huge deal - we’re not a nudist colony or anything, playing naked Putt-Putt in the Junkyard, but still - permanent residents reserve the right to be nude, when it is not inappropriate. If it does offend, please just say something. We’re all adults here.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Completely enjoyable experience. When you book a night at the Brooklyn Arts Studio, you know you're not getting a "cookie-cutter" experience. Although our arrival time was unpredictable, communication was good & Kellam was there to let us in and give us a quick run through the "what's what." We had booked "the dorm", but to our glee we ended up with "the chateau."
I totally enjoyed all the details of Kellam's house, his work in progress; the inner workings of the wall (framed copper pipes, dishes, old bottles,) repurposed, "re-mused" cabinet doors, furniture, bits and parts.
Although other guests were staying (here and there?) we still had a lovely quiet morning to ourselves.
We actually never got to know the immediate area, (an orientation would have been helpful ) but, we found our way to other parts of Brooklyn, where there were more restaurants and shops.
Casual and make your own experience.

  • Best word to describe the Brooklyn Art Studios is experience. It's located in Crown Heights Brooklyn which is still not as gentrified as other parts of Brooklyn which I enjoyed. The neighborhood is pretty safe and is close to the subway. The place was very interesting. I didn't know what to expect and what I experience was something I will always remember. Tori, Kellam, and Adam were great host. My friends and I stayed for a week and in that week I saw many people come and go throughout the week. I met some great people from around the word. This place is in sort like a community/hostel but without all the rules of a hostel. Very artistic place. I stayed in the Dorm which hosted 3 of is pretty well and is probably one of the more quiet rooms in the place. I had no problems there and would stay there again.

  • This was our first time using airbnb so we weren't sure what to expect, but we'll definitely be back! Kellam, Torie, and all the guests were very friendly and made us feel welcome. Shower pressure was fantastic. I miss the friendly cat already. One-of-a-kind experience, and much more memorable than staying in a hotel. We stayed in the Dorm but I'm itching to try one of the campers next time.

  • Sleeping in an old camper in Brooklyn was a wonderfully unusual experience. The uniqueness of the compound's design and decor made a visitor feel welcome. Recommended for the adventurous, the curious, the gregarious.

I am a furniture designer and maker. I've been living in this space for 15 years. An experienced traveler for sure, my favorite modes of travel are Barging and Hitchhiking, in that order. I speak a few languages -- well enough to make people laugh and find my way. I enjoy meeting people on my best days, and in all my years, I can only think of one person I really didn't like. Now I'm over it.
