The Space

This house is located on Ilha Grande, Brazil, a tropical island paradise 3 hours from Rio de Janeiro. The island is located in the Angra Bay and is the largest of 365 islands. The island is 60 square miles of mountain covered rainforest and 106 beaches. There are no cars, no roads just miles of hiking trails and plenty of boat trips to beautiful locales. The island is rustic but offers plenty of amenities - restaurants, shops, travel agencies, internet cafes, laundry etc. The house is located in a private area 20 minutes from the center and 10 minutes to the nearest beach. There are two big suites with bathrooms. One room has a double/queen and the other has a double/queen and a single bed. There is also a sleeping loft with outside bathroom. Internet access is available and there is hot water in all showers. The house has incredible views of the mountains and forest as well as the bay of Ilha Grande and the dramatic Brazilian coast. It is situated on a trail to one of the most celebrated beaches in the world - Lopes Mendes.

Inquire for prices on renting a suite for a couple of nights or a week or the entire house. Holiday pricing is also subject to changes from what is listed on the site. Ilha Grande is an amazing place and offers everything for adventure and nature seekers - monkeys, exotic birds, surfing, hiking, rappelling waterfalls, and more..

Please note: if you hate nature, don't like to hike or are afraid of the rainforest, this probably is not the place for you. You must walk 10 minutes across the town beach and climb another 10 minutes on a rainforest trail to arrive at the house. Our guests have a unique experience at the Rainforest House and we are delighted to provide it, but the main attraction is the secluded and gorgeous location... we use the trail as do 6 nearby houses, day or night, rain or shine... if you have a sense of adventure and a hankering for something authentic, please come! ....

BUT Don't forget your flashlight as rolling blackouts happen frequently (in summer, but you never know!) and you need it for the trail at night.

Please inquire for holiday pricing. Packages are required for Carnaval, Easter, Brazil day, Christmas and New Years.

  • I love Ihla Grande! I did not want to leave..!
It is a fantastic privileged experience to live in the Rainforest House. Not only is the rooms or suites fantastic, but the outside area and kitchen is amazingly well put together. The view is breathtaking, and the early mornings was my favorite part of the day. Everyday they created a great breakfast, with fruits from the beautiful surrounding garden and forest.
It is about 10-15 minutes walk though the jungle from the little town Abrãao. The town is a sweet little place. It has some of that cool backpacker feeling, but you get away from that the moment you step into the forest and on the path to the house.
I did not meet Jair & Jen, but their lovely manager Valentina, Fernando and Ricardo, where great hosts! They took me in, and made me feel like home. Fernando even took the time to show me the magic of the island, hunting bananas in the jungle, snorkeling at the beaches and climbing the top of the Pico do Papagaio.
I will recommend this place to anyone looking for something extra for the stay on this beautiful island. I will definitely go back again!

  • My friends and I loved Ilha Grande and the rainforest house! We were welcomed by Ricardo who was very friendly. Valentina hosted us and was literally the best. She went out of her way to make sure my friends and I were comfortable and helped us plan activities around the island. Her breakfast each morning was amazing! Jair was also very nice and accommodating. He made our group feel very welcome and when it was time for us to go, none of us wanted to leave. The Rainforest house is truly a one of a kind experience that i would recommend to anyone. Hopefully i will be back soon!

  • We loved Ilha Grande!! Ricardo & Valentina welcomed us with a big smile on their face, gave us some advices. Jair came although to welcome us. We had the upper room, which was nice, but without "private" hammock.
The breakfast was good and we had a great feijoida with the other nice guests cooked by Ricardo!
It is just a pity that the room is not cleaned everyday (especially the bathroom).
I think it is a bit expensive but this was still a really great experience. The view is outstanding, and even if it's hard to get there, this is definitely worth it ;-)

    Response from Jair & Jen:

Hi Iohanna! Thank you for the message and thank you for letting us know the bathroom was not cleaned every day. I am sorry you did not let us know while you were there as that is something standard in our service. We were going through new staff training at that time so this is good to know! Also the hammock will be replaced in the room. It was being cleaned, but must not have made it back in time. Glad you enjoyed the island! We love sharing our home with people who recognize how special the place is! Many thanks!

  • We had a magical weekend on Ilha Grande because we stayed at the Rainforest House. It is such an amazing place to stay!!!!! Well worth the short hike to get there (our five year old daughter managed the climb no problem). Jair, Valentina, and the rest of the staff were warm, friendly, and made us feel so very much at home. Amazing views, great vibes!! I cannot recommend this highly enough. Staying there made our experience. Thanks so much!!!

  • We had an amazing experience in the middle of the jungle! The island with it's hundred beaches is awesome, and so is the Rainforest House. The place is exactly like in the pics and even better. Rustic and cosy. We stayed in the upper room next to the kitchen and it was beautiful. (The kitchen is to share.)
Unbelievably beautiful view, a hammock and fresh fruits and scrambled eggs every morning on a table - what more could you expect?
You need to prepare for some hiking everytime you want to go, for example, to the Village, so remember good shoes, flashlight and don't be afraid of the noises from the woods in the night - it's just a monkey or some shy armadillo. :) Jair, Ricardo and the Birthday - Party-Boy, you all were the best hosts man can get. Greetings from Finland and thank you all so much.

  • The island in general is awesome with lovely beaches and great paths to walk for hours, and the Rainforest House is incredibly amazing! The rooms are really nicely decorated, with comfortable beds and useful (and romantic!) mosquito nets, each one with a small and clean bathroom. The kitchen is functional and the terrace is just fantastic with great views. All these things would make already the stay a great one, but what makes it unforgettable for us was the kindness and help of Riccardo! greatest guy ever, with plenty of tips to profit the island and also a lot of lovely chit chat! we all really enjoy that a lot and we are really grateful!! We just came across once with Jair, so I cannot say too much about him and Jen, though we just met her by email, I can say that she is the most available and helpful host ever.

For us it was just perfect as we all really enjoy the Forest and nature life, but there are some minor things that can be really annoying for some people (we were warned by Jen in advanced, so it is not a complaint, just an advice). The house is far away from the village and there are plenty of mosquitos and bugs, especially during the breakfast (sooooo good the breakfast made by Riccardo by the way!). All in all, I do strongly recommend the experience, we were six occupying the whole house and it was just incredible awesome and we are looking forward to coming back again!

  • Marvellous house, the view is superb, everything seems very romantic here.
The hosting is a bit akward though...
Two people are taking care of you, Jair and Riccardo.
Riccardo is the sweetest person on earth, helping you for everything, preparing for you the most adorable breakfast. He perfectly knows how to receive people, with kindness and discretion.
Jair on the other hand, does not seem to have the same definition of discretion.
If you want a romantic stay avoid the house, Jair seems to make you understand that the house is not yours and your couple's privacy does not exist.
After telling you that you will be alone in the house, you suddenly find him preparing himself a coffee while you go out of your bedroom half naked...

Why telling us we would be alone?

I'm not that shy and I love low key atmosphere, but he made us feel very embarassed.
Thank you to Jen his adorable wife and Riccardo for their help and advices.

    Response from Jair & Jen:

Hi Claire! Thanks for your review. I am sorry if there was some kind of miscommunication with Jair. The house is always a shared space unless you rent the entire house to yourselves. I am sure he was simply advising you that you were the only ones sleeping there. We have to use the house to clean rooms, do repairs and such regardless of you staying there alone. If you rent the entire house, we leave you to your own devices. I am sorry if Jair made you uncomfortable by his being there. That is the last thing he would want and will be very embarrassed to hear he was in any way a nuisance. Thank you again for staying with us and I hope the rest of your trip was terrific. Abracos, Jen

About
My wife and I are consummate travelers. We divide our time between Brazil and the US being a couple of mixed nationalities. I am Brazilian and from Rio de Janeiro originally. I came to Ilha Grande 18 years ago and have (email hidden) in Brazil and a boat captain in the US and Brazil. I am a surfer, hiker and skater. I love radical sports and nature. Staying at the jungle house is a special experience and one you will not have in any other place. As a guest, I will give you as much information as you want about the island, the nature, the activities or leave you alone to experience it as you please. I am delighted to host people from all over the world and share our special island.
