Interaction with Guests

We can turn you on to all things on offer from quirky to elegant in this amazing town. We are engaging hosts (as you can see from our reviews on our other listings.) We love to share our discoveries as lovers of great food, music, architecture, archaeology, history and both ancient and modern culture.

You will have all the maps and local suggestions you may need for a magical stay in San Miguel!
We have been managing properties a long time and are very aware of creating comfort for our guests!

The Neighborhood

Our house is nestled on a hillside in a country-like setting NOT in Centro San Miguel, but very accesible-which is what we love about it! Our safe, quiet no-through fare cobblestone street is located in Monte de Loreto, a new but typical Mexican Colonia which has both Mexican and International residents. We know all our neighbours and are part of "Neighbourhood Watch" Our street sits off a country road aside an old ranching property with panoramic vistas overlooking the mountains and the church steepled spires of the historic center. Besides the city markets, we have a local market on Mondays and Saturdays in the next neighbourhood about 5 blocks away. Every restaurant in town delivers-all for a $3 tip! Pizza and local street food is available nearby and there are also small "tiendas" or stores throughout the neighbourhood, and fresh tortillas and fruit and vegetables are delivered to our door daily. There is a very inexpensive but well equipped gym in walking distance and numerous yoga, dance and Zumba classes close by. At the top of our street there is a biking/walking/running track that leads to the to botanical gardens and water reservoir. There is also a children's playground a few minutes walk away.

Getting around

Located just 10 minutes north beyond the Fabrica Aurora Art & Design Center, a further 15 minute walk to center of town, central markets and Jardin! That is only one mile/a walkable 25 minutes total trip or 7 minute cab/local bus ride to the Jardin in Centro Historico.

-The local bus stops every 10 minutes at bottom of our street and for 50 cents takes you directly to the modern shopping mall/ supermarkets, "Tianguis" Tuesday market or into town.
-If you do not want to walk the whole distance into town and cabs are safe, plentiful and inexpensive at $3-4 per ride.
-We often walk into town and cab it back if shopping or if it is too hot or at night.
-Cabs will take you to the hotsprings for about $10 and private tours, shuttles and private cars are also readily available.
-Close Fabrica Aurora Art & Design Center and the Guadalupe Arts District-both with great restaurants, regular art openings, organic grocery and interesting shops and galleries.
-We are also well located to both the big central markets-one in Centro, the other San Juan Dios. Both are filled with fresh fruit, meats, fish, vegetables and flowers. (and great taco stands!)

Getting Out of Town
We are minutes from several hot springs, golf courses and horse trail riding and the highway that leads to all the shopping centers and other major towns of interest such as Atotonilco and Dolores Hildago-the talvera pottery center, antique yards, several haciendas, wineries and agarve and organic farms. A car is useful but not necessary except for touring. Cabs will take you to the hotsprings for about $10 and private tours, shuttles and private cars are also readily available.

Other Things to Note

Some rooms in San Miguel can be dark, cute but not comfortable, draughty and cold, or are in neighbourhoods that are crowded and constantly noisy. There are many benefits of being right in Centro but we offer the serenity of being just outside of the San Miguel yet having access to all the action whenever we want it being a short distance to town. Although we do not have traffic or music or crowded conditions in our area, this is Mexico and fireworks, domestic dogs barking and festival music is part of the culture and therefore part of the soundscape!

As a painter and sculptor we know the local art scene & where the best classes are. The property is close to both the Fabrica Auruoa and Guadalupe Arts District, where there are many art classes held. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you want answered before you arrive or travel options you want to explore.

  • I recently spent 3 nights with Cate & Judson in their lovely San Miguel de Allende home. Having read so many good reviews, I was expecting that my first Airbnb stay would go well. However, nothing prepared me for what gracious and accommodating hosts they are. I had been in Mexico City for a month prior to my San Miguel weekend and was looking for a chance to relax and leave DF's hustle and bustle behind. From the moment they met me at the bus station on Thursday to their final send off on Sunday, Cate & Judson were truly amazing. Their local knowledge is without equal and they went out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed. I wouldn't hesitate to return and have already recommended then to my friends. While they started as my hosts, they ended as my good friends.

  • I'm a traveler, and not a tourist. I always try to pick a location to visit and a place to stay where (as a single woman) I will feel more than just physically safe and comfortable. It is just as important that I feel this way with the people surrounding me. If my life is enhanced and enriched as a result of being with them, then my trip becomes even that much more meaningful and unforgettable. I think people come into your life when they do for a certain reason. No matter how great a place and people look online, it is somewhat luck, and an even more pleasant surprise to actually find things even BETTER than one expected them to be. Such was the case with me and Cate and Judson.

From the moment I arrived (very late - after 1 am!), I was warmly welcomed by Judson that night and by Cate (with white roses for my room) in the morning. His legendary coffee did not disappoint! This couple is the "real deal"! Their home is beautiful and tastefully decorated. Even though my room with a great bed (and ensuite) was not far upstairs from the dining room (and around the corner from their room), it felt like I had more than enough privacy and at times, even had the whole house to myself. It took me about three days to "unwind" from the hectic life I had left behind. It was lovely to come down to their kitchen, whenever I felt like it in the morning, to a great breakfast selection of cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, bread and eggs. I was rewarded one morning for getting up early, with a hot breakfast of huevos rancheros, that they were having and which they shared with me.

Cate took me with her one day to La Gruta, a nearby hot spring, and we had a wonderful time there. Both she and Judson anticipated every need, from maps and directions and language books, to restaurant and Spanish tutor recommendations, to arranging for a massage, rides into town, and calling for taxis. They also entrusted me with their house key, so I didn't feel at all like I was inconveniencing or disturbing them with my "I'm on vacation schedule".

They are both working artists and I had the opportunity to view their artwork in their home and also, at a local gallery, where Cate gave a talk about her paintings one afternoon. This experience was even more special, since I felt I already "knew" the artist! Their studio is on the third floor of their home and has an incredible view of San Miguel. My only regret is that I didn't have time to just sit up there with a glass of vino tinto and see the beautiful sunsets!

There were many things that made this trip wonderful. Most of all, these strangers who gave so much, "got" me (immediately!), and welcomed me into their home. My new lifetime friends.

Muchas Gracias Marcia! What a lovely description of your stay with us!
We are 'just do it" type of people and don't think too much about how we personally are affecting others-so having this reflection from you is a real gift! We love sharing our home and the life we have created here! Thank you for being such a gracious guest and opening yourself to all the possibilities San Miguel offers! Hasta pronto!

  • We were fortunate to find Cate and Judson on airbnb and secure a room for 4 nights.  From the moment we arrived, Cate and Judson welcomed us warmly and treated us like family.  They epitomize, 'mi casa es tu casa', and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.  The room is beautiful along with the ensuite, the room is quiet and I have to say, Judson makes amazing coffee in the morning.  As an Australian who loves coffee, this was a bonus.

In terms of value, Cate and Judson's home is a fraction of the price of hotels and b & b's in SMA and as it is a small town, getting into Centro is quick and easy.

We loved our stay and adore Cate and Judson, they are fantastic hosts who helped us make the most of our 4 nights in SMA, directing us to all the best places to see and eat at.

We look forward to seeing our new friends again somewhere in the world and thank Cate and Judson for their kindness and generosity.

We live in Byron Bay. New South Wales, Australia AND San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. We are both full time practising artists, Judson, a New Zealand born sculptor and master carver and Cate a USA born painter (and also life coach). We have created amazing homes in both Mexico and Australia that are filled with our paintings and sculptures along with surprising artworks of other international artists and many treasures from both our travels and from nature. We have both managed B & B properties as one of our many lifestyle incarnations and take pleasure in making travellers welcome and comfortable. We enjoy sharing our passions of art, history, culture, music, great food and of course traveling, with others! We ended up living in Mexico after going on a year trip through South America and across the USA visiting the national parks.Looking for a place to stop and do some artwork, we went to San Miguel de Allende and felt so at home in this amazing colonial jewel. We are currently exhibiting our sculptures and paintings in Mexico, California and Chicago. We also are enjoying sharing our skills and passion of art making with others. Recently we have opened our home studios both in Mexico and Australia up to both experienced and beginner painters and sculptors who want to have some fun and receive qualified, professional one on one art instruction. Feel free to ask us more about it! Adventurers at heart, we have soaking up as much of beautiful Mexico when we are there doing trips to various archeological sites and many colonial towns along the way! People often ask us where is home-and we reply that home is in our hearts because we have them with us wherever we go! Come visit! Happy Travels! Cate and Judson
