The Space

If you're looking for a cozy retreat in the magestic setting of untouched Europe, look no further. The Bakony, the former hunting grounds of Hungarian royalty, is a quiet land just 2 hours in between Vienna and Budapest. Nestled in the center of the tiny village of Porva, our house sits on an acre of land ripe with fruit trees and cultivated rows of eggplants, squash, blackberries, strawberries and more.

Our simple, rustic home is the perfect getaway for families, writers and artists looking for a retreat from the modern world. Cook on a wood-burning stove, and eat your meals in the kitchen or in the yard with a view of a church built on a 1000-year-old foundation which sits just behind the house.

Sleep in our hand-crafted four-post King master bed, made by a local artisan out of wood from our own forest. A second set of guests will be comfortable in the twin beds in the next room. All beds boast Hungarian goose-down comforters and pillows, and plenty of extra blankets for fall and winter months.

Outside the house doors, enjoy quiet and utter safety of our large yard--gather eggs from the hens (or, if as has just happened, the coyotes get the hens, we'll provide eggs from other locals), picnic under the shady plum trees or take a walk into the garden and beyond, deep into the forests behind the house.

Hikers, cyclists and adventurers will love the proximity to the Bakony mountains hiking trails. Wine enthusiasts can use our home as a perch from which to explore the wines of Lake Balaton, just 40 minutes drive. Explore historic Zirc, and the castles and cathedrals of the many nearby (website hidden) of all, let our family-- welcoming and accommodating {German and Hungarian speaking} hosts-- be your guide to life in Porva.

Available for weekend or week stays, or longer sabbaticals.

After a weekend-long wedding-celebration near Budapest, we were looking for 5 days of peace and quiet in the countryside and that is exactly what Sarah&Andras' little house offers!
We had some trouble finding the place, as we didn't know what house-number to look for. After showing some local people the Airbnb print-out (most don't speak German or English), we managed to locate Andras' aunt, who kindly gave us the keys and left us to explore the place.
The house itself is very nice and clean, with a cosy and well-equipped kitchen. Both bedrooms are charming and spacious, with beautiful furniture. If you're a light sleeper, you may want to bring ear-plugs, as the neighbourhood-dogs tend to wake up early and barking, and cars drive by right pass the bedroom-window.
We had one very cold and rainy day and we did miss a place to sit and read inside (the kitchen-chairs are not all that comfortable and there's no living-room). But on the warmer days, we really enjoyed the yard, playing games, drinking wine and reading under the tree, and walking in the beautiful surrounding woods and fields. We also took lovely day-trips to Lake Balaton, which is about 40 minutes away.
Supermarkets are located in Zirc, a 15 minute drive away.

Sarah and Andras are very friendly hosts, and easy to communicate with. They made sure we had all the details and were very quick in responding to our questions. The local host we met was also very friendly, and kept to herself mainly. She lives next door, so is very easily available for questions.

If you're looking for a quiet and basic retreat in an authentic Hungarian village, this is the one you want!

  • we had a great time in Porva. It is a small village, were time stood still. We mainly stayed at the house, sitting in the garden and looking at the great view in front of us, with the little church and the lovely landscape. Every day I made a meal in the lovely decorated kitchen, although it was very hot outside, it was great fun. I loved walking through the vegetable garden in front of us and we took some herbs and zuchini for cooking. We also loved to play boule in the garden. It is not the perfect playground I think, because my husband was always the winner...;-).
We are a couple from Germany and so we could talk to the aunt living next door in German. English is not very common in this village, some German words could help. For shopping we drive about 10 min. to zirc. where you can find everything you need. I found a bakery which I loved and the nice young baker come from behind to help me with my decisions. But there are also some small shops nearby - I know, but I did not use. If you do not want to make sight seeing tours in the near area and you want to enjoy the garden with the lovely tree, love cooking with very good cooking dishes you will have a great time. We would love to come back some time.

  • My boyfriend and I wanted a romantic getaway in the countryside, and Sarah and Andras's place was wonderful! The location is a nice balance of town and country - the front of the house looks out onto the main street of Porvo and the back looks out onto their garden and fields. There are supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants two towns over, but the house itself feels like a country getaway with a large kitchen and a picnic table for eating dinner or breakfast outside.

  • We had a lovely 5 days in Porva,at Kkis Madar Haus. It was a little confusing when we arrived as no one speaks english, and we were a little late, but we got the keys. My problem was that I was looking for a farm house on land, not a house on the main st of Porva. The house was very clean and everything you needed to have a great stay. We ate under the old pear tree in the back yard of a late afternoon, read books and played games.
We found the noise of the cars and dogs that set off barking early in the mornings etc was not the best for what was a most tranquil setting. But all could be forgotten once you were in the backyard under that pear tree. Andras and Sarah were the best with communication to us,overall we had 5 good days in Porva ,and would recommend to,people, but just let them know first it is not a farmlet.

  • Seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, we found our way to Porva for an idyllic 5 day visit. We arrived to welcoming hosts who had the house ready for our toddler with a crib and high chair set up. In addition, our gracious hosts provided us with fresh eggs and veggies from the garden, as well as homemade bread. The house is totally comfortable -with lovely details like fresh cut roses and lavender bedside - but we spent as much as time possible enjoying the yard and beautiful scenery. Great spot for day trips to Lake Balaton and surrounding hills and sights. Sarah was extremely helpful before we arrived by sharing ideas about kid-friendly day trips nearby. Highly recommend this lovely country home, we'd love to return someday.
