Ours is a post and beam home constructed without nails in a truly unique fashion. The Japanese style sliding doors allow you to completely join the indoor and outdoor spaces or slide them shut for more privacy. The upstairs bedroom gives views of the rice fields and the jungle right from your bed! Amazing to wake up to! This is our dream home but until we can stay all year, we will share it with you.
Guests have their own private garden and plunge pool as well as fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. The house also has a tv with dvd player (no cable), movie library and book library (take one/ and or leave one). Wifi access and small office area in home. Also part of a small compound of 12 houses that share a larger garden space, pool, courtyards and staff always available. Breakfast cooked for you in the house each day is included as well as daily cleaning. Towels and linens supplied.
I am available by email for any and all issues, questions or celebrations but live in Canada so am not on property and the time difference can be difficult. Wayan is our on site manager and there are night security if you arrive late. We recommend booking a local driver to pick you up as some drivers from farther away have struggled with directions. There is also a staff that includes cleaners, cooks and gardeners available as needed. You will be pampered!
I love that fact that our house and compound are tucked away. You feel like you are in the middle of nowhere with the rice field views and the farmers walking by but are only just out of Ubud by foot or a bike ride. Our staff are all local and if you are interested are always willing to take you to local ceremonies and include you in their culture or come to the house and cook for you. To me, we have the perfect balance of local flavour and culture with the comforts of home. That is why we chose the house!
Local drivers can be hired through the staff or you can just walk out to the street and wait for a honk. Town is also easily accessible by walking, biking or a quick ride on a scooter. Cars, scooters and bikes can be rented from the staff. And if all that is too much, most of the local restaurants deliver!
The shallow cool water plunge pool is a great place to hang out if the pool is crowded or a nice place to let your children splash about safely. Plus we have loungers and beanbag chairs on our separate patios. The house is not huge but it is comfortable and cozy!
With open air living, noise travels so we like you to respect the neighbours. We truly believe in karma and hope that you will treat our home with the respect and love that you would treat your own. There are no pets allowed. Smoking and candles are discouraged because of the alang alang roof.
We (2 couples) stayed at Michele's place for three nights in August. Her place is amazing and offers enough space for four people. The staff is really friendly and helpful and made us really good breakfast every morning. Actually, it was the best breakfast we had so far in the past three weeks that we've been traveling Bali & Lombok.
The open living concept is also quite nice. The downside of course is that you hear everything that's going on in the neighborhood. To be honest, that was quite loud. The first night it started with some cats, followed by the dogs and finally all the roosters started 'communicating'. It basically went on the whole night, so that some of us barely slept at all. Ear plugs really help those who are able to sleep with these things. ;)
The other night there was a ceremony or maybe a kind of school festival that started at 5 in the morning with loud music and an even louder speaker voice. We couldn't figure out exactly what was going on since we were too tired to get out of bed. To be fair I have to say that the downstairs bedroom is a lot better in this regard than its upstairs counterpart, which is completely open (only curtains) . The benefit of the latter of course being a nice breeze during the night, which we really enjoyed!
The place is also perfect for taking a walk through the rice fields and the locals that you encounter are really friendly.
The staff also arranged motorbikes for us which was really helpful (and necessary in our opinion).
Another amazing thing about the place was of course the pool. You feel like swimming 'into' the rice fields and especially in the afternoon / early evening (a little before sunset) the mood was just magnificent.
All in all we enjoyed our stay at Michele's place a lot and can highly recommend it to others. Bringing ear plugs certainly isn't a bad idea, but then that goes for all of Bali, to be fair. ;)
Michele was also really helpful prior to our arrival and also gave us some email tips during our stay. Airbnb at its best! ;)
Thank you so much for everything! We had a great time!
We've spent two days at the house, and our stay was really pleasant. We loved the position just in front of the rice fields . The house which is part of a pretty complex of wooden villas is really nice. Ubud downtown can be reached by 5 min by taxi or scooter. The staff arranged us some scooters in less than an hour and they were all very helpful. Michelle gave us very usefull information and was great.
I highly recommend the villa.
Our stay at Michele house were amazing, totally what we were looking for, staying in Ubud. A quiet place in the middle of the nature. This open house is an exceptional experience and a cozy place perfect for 2 couples as we were. The best part about it the room being open is that all the different sounds of the many animals and insects humming you to sleep, so it doesn't matter if you're a light sleeper. The staff is really nice and professional! The only point is that we were there during rainy days, so because it's all open, our clothes were a bit damp. Indeed that was not a grievous factor for us, as we are travelers on an enduring journey & adaption is part of our nature! We strongly recommend this villa/resort for any & all travelers, may it be families or couples. This place is unique by all means. Perfect, being one with nature!
My friends and I stayed at the villa for three nights. The villa is a bit smaller than we had expected but sufficient for four people. The dip pool was empty at the time we arrived and we were unable to fill it so we didn't get a chance to enjoy the pool. The shared pool is quite big, but due to the rain, there were quite a lot of leaves floating around.
The villa is located about 30min walking distance from Ubud center which is not too bad, but the roads are quite dark at night, so it might be wise to rent a scooter. The staff were quite friendly and helpful. They arranged scooters for us in about 30 minutes.
The design of the villa means you need to be prepared with mosquitoes and other bugs.
Overall we had a great time!
Michele was amazing. She was extremely helpful during our conversations and assisted greatly with arranging transport from the airport to her space in spite of my booking being last minute. Her space was conveniently located, 'close' to Ubud's center but still very quiet away from the noise of the main road. Even though we managed to walk to the city center and back on our first day, it's best if you rent a motorcycle to explore the city and Michele's space is central enough to facilitate that.
It was an interesting experience with the indoor/outdoor living concept especially when we were frequently visited by insects and the occasional frogs, lizards and spiders. Not that my guests and myself minded that, but it's definitely not for those who are afraid of bugs. I'd be nitpicking if I were to mention mosquitoes, but this is Bali, and mosquitoes are in abundance throughout the whole island! So if you're planning a Bali trip, don't forget to pack your mosquito repellants!
There's no immediate 'view' from the space but a short walk to the shared pool provides an immaculate view of the surrounding rice fields. We wished there was better lighting though because it gets really dark! But ultimately, travel mates and myself thoroughly enjoyed the serenity and the simplicity of the space that assisted with us having conversations away from any distractions.
I'd definitely recommend Michele's space for those who don't mind the indoor/outdoor living concept - almost camping in the jungle with better facilities! Would definitely consider staying here when I visit Ubud again.
Thanks for the thoughtful feedback Firdauz! Lighting is something we have been continually working on as the switches are in the upper corners and are hard to locate in the dark. With the glass and wood structure we haven't been successful yet. We do keep adding freestanding lamps to make it easier. I have also taken photos of the light switches in the hopes of printing a how to guide to help guests get settled. I will be sure to replace the mosquito lamp as well. I will check with the neighbours as the cows had been moved further away last summer. Sometimes it is a rotten coconut that has fallen and imitates the smell! We will work on it! Glad you had fun and enjoyed our space!
I am a teacher on a mission to retire to Bali. My husband and I got married on an elephant in Bali in 2003 and have been on a mission to move there since. Our current goal is to be there by 2021 but for now we have the home of our heart there and spend a portion of each summer there enjoying all that Bali has to offer. We currently sponsor 4 families' children to keep them in school to give back and spend a part of each summer visiting these families. 2 of our former students have graduated and are currently working or raising families. We would love to host you in our home when we are not lucky enough to be there and hope you love it as much as we do!
