This space was built as a Model T Garage in 1926 behind a 1915 bungalow but it has had a face lift and has taken on a new life as a cozy, little freestanding studio made mostly from reclaimed materials. A "tiny house" if you will.
The sleeping loft comfortably sleeps two and there is a futon below the loft where one can enjoy a book while the other naps above. Occasionally you will hear the trains in the distance which adds a touch of nostalgia and you get to wake to the relaxing clucking and cooing of the neighborhood hens as this area has a nice spattering of urban farms.
You may get an occasional visit at the door visits from Sita (short for Mamacita), a sweet black and white cat. She loves to come to say "hi" but is not allowed inside to maintain this as a "pet dander free" space.
The table pictured here has been replaced with a "garden shed" counter that houses a small, removable basin sink. There is also a rustic, rough hewn armoire to hang clothes and tuck away your backpacks. The little kitchenette corner is stocked with utensils, a two burner cooktop, a mini fridge, a microwave, coffee grinder and a coffee press.
Internet access can be spotty at times for sure. Oftentimes folks come inside to the kitchen or go hang out at one of the neighborhood cafes to write and people watch.
The studio's setup is more akin to a cabin, and as many cabins go, there is no no bathroom. you will be given a key to the main house so please feel comfortable enough to come in and use the facilities. Internet is easy access in the house.
By the way, it is insulated, stocked with plenty of blankets and does have heat so it is a wonderful, warm hideaway in the fall and winter months as well.
The yard is plentiful with fruit bearing trees in the summertime, as well as tomatoes, onions, garlic and strawberries in the gardens...
It's within a 5 minute walk from the heart of Woodlawn which has some fantastic spots to shop, drink, dance, and dine:
-Firehouse Restaurant, somewhat romantic with good service
-Woodlawn Coffee House, for plenty of people watching
-Breakside Brewery, to grab a bite and catch up on the game
-ReViva, a funky resale shop for gifts, jewelry, furniture, music
-Good Neighbor Pizza, laid back and late night too
-P's & Q's Market serves meals and a few grocery items
-The Village Ballroom, for Zumba and Ecstatic Dance
-Koken Market, for almost any beer you want, snacks
-Café Eleven, art, coffee, lunch & some gluten free pastries
-Oregon Public House, the nation's 1st nonprofit pub
-Alchemy Cafe, good smoothies, burgers and breakfasts
The Alberta Arts District is also just minutes away so you can hop on a bike and be right in the middle of the jam-packed Last Thursday Art Walk or make a day of it with shopping, dinner and some delicious ice cream from the infamous Salt & Straw. Then come "home" to your quieter retreat where you can just relax and lay in the hammock.....ahhhh. And as the area is well surrounded by beautiful, mature trees, you may decide to enjoy dinner in the love seat swing under the pergola and watch the evening sky. It is a wonderful theatre for watching small bats do their sky routine in the distance.
Flying in? This spot is only 10 minutes from the airport. And if you let me know when you book, I can come retrieve you by minivan from the airport or train station for $20; this might be especially relevant if you have bikes, lots of bags or equipment. Let me know!
And while in Portland, you may want some wheels! Well, this location is very close to Zipcars and you can sign up with them or Car2go on their sites in advance of your stay. But if you want to explore the city on two wheels, Everybody Bike Rentals or Ebikes ( electric bike rentals) are the spots to hit first (10 min. by bus). They provide helmets and locks too!

Nice host and the stay was nice.
My little sister and I really enjoyed this cozy space! Andree was really flexible in meeting which was great and took time to chat even though she had a lot going on! so good!
Andrée nous a accueilli très chaleureusement. Le studio dans son jardin est superbe. Un petit coin de calme et de sérénité. Tout était parfait !
This was a delightful weekend and Andree was very accommodating of our late arrival. She made us feel welcome and was fun to chat with. The sleeping loft if adorable. Everything was tidy, clean and fun to explore when we arrived and everything we could have needed was inside. There is a heater if it's cold outside and if you need to use the restroom the main house is only steps away!
The garden studio was amazing to stay in! Very cozy and peaceful after a day of adventures. Andrée was also a wonderful host. We had some great conversation any time we came across each other. The bathroom was clean and not a problem to access. This is a great space to stay in if you're traveling alone or with another guest!
Andrée was a sweet and accommodating host. We ended up being very delayed in arriving Friday night, and she was great about making that possible. The neighborhood is terrific - very quiet, near a wonderful park, great (natural foods) market, and the best breakfast / coffee spot!
The garage cum studio/loft is small (and very interesting!) but adequate if you're not going to be spending too much time there. There is no running water in the studio, so you do have to go into the house to wash up, bathe, and use the potty. If that doesn't bother you, this is a great, quirky spot -- and very reasonably priced.
Andrée is amazing! She was very welcoming and friendly. She had great insight on things to do and things to avoid in the city. The studio was better than I could imagine. It looks like something out of a blog. Very clean, cozy and well decorated.
The listing was as described, with even a couple more piece of furniture in the studio. Andree was helpful and accommodating with our late arrival and the studio had information on a number of local options. The property is a short walk from 3-4 eateries and a bus stop. I would recommend it if you were looking to stay in that neighborhood.
Andrèe was a wonderful host! Room was wonderful and quaint, exactly as listed. Would certainly stay again.
