Bright and warm country family home with patio and large garden, only 30 mins to Galway city, 10 mins to the lively village of Kinvarra. We are 3kms to the sea at Galway Bay for swimming and where we can arrange kayaking, and have bicycles for guests to borrow. We love cooking - guests seem to love it too; walking in the Burren, and swimming at the local pier. We share the house with two small, friendly dogs and enjoy visiting Kinvarra for the music at weekends.
The area is rural and safe with several good walks locally and further afield, such as Athenry Woods, Coole Park. The local village of Kilcolgan is 5 minutes by car, 15 by bike. There are also nearby beaches for swimming. At low tides you can visit the deserted village on Island Eddy out in the bay.
Guests share the home, garden and patio, they may borrow bicycles. You can eat with us of an evening - typically a starter and main course - for 15 euro pp, but bring your own wine! This is a non-smoking house; however, smokers are welcome if they smoke outside. It is a rural community, so nights are generally quiet but, hey, if you're out for a pint or two locally, let yourself in quietly.
Interaction with Guests
We live here so guests share the family atmosphere. Guests share breakfast and may accompany us walking and swimming. If pre-arranged they can enjoy an evening meal with us (15 euro pp) comprising local seasonal delicacies (eg: oysters, mussels, nettle soup). We are good cooks. I have fairly extensive knowledge of the local history which I love to share.
Overlooking the 6th century church at Drumacoo (see Wordpress for more info), this is a quiet rural road close to Galway Bay. A short drive or cycle to nearby Kilcolgan for local amenities including buses to and from Galway so one can enjoy the buzz of the cityand its racing and arts festivals and escape to a rural idyll. Ideally located for tours of the Burren National Park and other excursions. The area provides for swimming, walking, kayaking, horse riding, cycling, and a short 20 minutes drive to Oranmore golf club. Visit (website hidden) for further details and photos.
The nearby village of Kilcolgan (accessible by walking, or we could lend you a bike, or hitch a lift) has bus access into Galway and other towns as well as the Burren National Park. Local taxis are readily available. Locally, hitching is normally do-able and safe.
Other Things to Note
We love hill walking in the locality and guests are welcome to join us and to enjoy a pint in a local pub at the end of a climb.
We have two cowardly Jack Russel terriers so have no objection to pets. Smokers are welcome to smoke outside the house. Please do not invite strangers into the home.
Best place to stay!!! Giles and Ruth are great hosts and very lovely and interesting people too. We had an unbelievable tasty dinner and a lovely breakfast. We and our baby felt very welcome in their home and we had a great time.
We had a really lovely stay here, Giles and Ruth welcomed us like friends and we spent a great evening having dinner and chatting. The bed was comfortable and the location nice and quiet.
Breakfast was delicious and Ruth even made us a packed lunch to take on our walk from Doolin to Cliffs of Moher.
Giles and Ruth could not have been more friendly and helpful.
We would thoroughly recommend staying here - we felt very well looked after and would love to go back again.
Our stay was brief, but lovely. After a long day of travel we were made to feel welcome by Giles and Ruth and a pot of tea. Giles gave us a brief rundown of the history of the little church nearby, which we explored that evening. Full Irish breakfast the next morning was delicious, and left us ready to take the beautiful hike Giles suggested from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher. Thanks for a great stay!
My husband and I stayed here while visiting Galway and the Cliffs, and we were so impressed by this place! We felt welcome from the second we walked in the door. Ruth and Giles were the best hosts in the best house you could ask to stay in. Everything was impeccable: the communication, the price, the room, the shower, the food(!), and the company. My only gripe is that we didn't stay longer. If you're coming to the West coast of Ireland, do yourself a favor and stay with the Hillsons.
Our first night in Ireland and we could not be more lucky. Gils and his wife are so friendly that we felt at home. We love everything of this place : the bedroom, the kitchen, the garden and even the dogs. And if you need any suggestions for your holiday, just ask to them!
Giles and his family provided an excellent home away from home. They were very welcoming and we were very comfortable in the accommodation. Local information and tips were shared and Giles' breakfast was delicious.
We'd definitely stay again and highly recommend other people to stay.
