The Space

I have a single room that is very small and cozy that only will accommodate one person. It is the perfect room for the traveler who is just looking for a place to rest for a few nights in any given week. This is a shared apartment that has two other rooms with one room already being occupied by me. The traveler would only have to share the bathroom with one other person, since my room is self-contained and has its own bathroom. This room is located on the second floor of my home. It is in a beautiful duplex apartment in Brooklyn that is 15 minutes away from downtown Manhattan by trains. My neighborhood borders both a Jewish and a West Indian community and I live on a small block. It is located across the street from a playground and one block away from the Interfaith Hospital. There are post offices, pharmacies, grocery stores, hair and nail salons, supermarkets and other places that provides a variety of amenities nearby. The C train is just one block away & the A trains are two blocks away, the LIRR is also a block away and other means of public transportation are very convenient just in case one does not drive. There is a parking garage that is located three blocks away from my home, also a BP Gas station and a Seven Eleven is located around the corner just in-case one does drive. Furthermore, The Children's museum, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Bridge, Prospect Park and the Botanical Garden are all amazing sites to see while staying at my home.

  • I can honestly say I was planning on leaving Brooklyn, NY in great spirits..but I didn't and this is my story.
Everything was great about the stay up until the last night. The room is very small but it is described in the description so I can't complain. You will be next to her mother across the hall which wasn't a problem for the most part. The bed was the worst bed I've ever slept on in my life, there is no cushion ALL SPRINGS.
Like I said this is a negative response stemming from the fact my last night I was there it had reached record lows in NYC 5 degrees. Portia decided not to take out the air conditioner (why i still don't know) and obviously anyone owning a air conditioner knows in the winter you take it out! I ended up sleeping in a hoodie, jacket, hat, and everything. I barely slept and when I woke up, I could literally see my breathe in the room, it was that COLD! Now I understand my situation most likely might not affect your stay, because its a unusual situation, BUT the common sense to take out the air conditioner for your guest when its WINTER should be a given. For all that may be reading it was actually 50 in the morning, so I'm not here to just give a bad response..its just simply horrible management.
This trip was supposed to be memorable for me, which it was but the last night was literally stripped from me due to poor lack of judgement on her part.
I most defiantly do NOT recommend this stay, there are plenty of offers on this site you'll find a better more comfortable arrangement somewhere else I guarantee it!

  • Portia was a great host and very hospitable. She let you do your own thing if needed, but if you had any questions or concerns, she would be very quick to help you out with anything.

The room - as mentioned - is cozy, small and simple. Very suitable for the single traveller who needs a place to rest their head after a busy day checking New York out. Very close to public transport the subway, bus routes and LIRR train have stops nearby.

The neighborhood was very friendly and safe as well. It's relatively fine to walk the streets at night if you keep alert.

  • My stay was very nice!. I spent nine nights and the room and the apartment are exactly what you see in the pictures. The space is very clean and simple, common areas are large, clean and cozy. My room was small as inidicated, only for one person, but enough. The district is in my opinion very interesting and genuine, a 20 mins metro ride from down and mid Manhattan. Express A line is very convienent to go to Manhtattan and JFk. Near the aptmt there are a lot of local shops and supermarkets. I didn't see Portia much but she was always ready to help. Her mum was there too and she was also very nice and approachebale to help. I think is a good place to stay. No bad surprises and good people!.

  • Amazinggggggggggggggggggggg!!!!
Portia was an extraordinary host!!! Very very quickly I felt at home (when you will meet Portia's mother – Angie – you will realize what I am talking about – a real angel with a great soul!).
I have received free (and very comfortable) access to the entire apartment. Very beautiful living room, kitchen, free Wi-Fi, LCD, refrigerator, newly renovated space – everything is painted very nicely, bathroom new, beautiful and clean.
When I arrived, clean towels and linens were prepared. I have received a map and a patient guidance from Portia for easy commute throughout the city. The apartment is located 5 minutes to C train to all over NY.
To summarize with one word – amazinggggggggggggggggggggg!!!!

  • Das Zimmer ist klein aber fein. Alles sehr sauber.

  • Portia is a rockstar! She was an excellent host throughout my stay. I've been to NYC many times but it was a whole different experience this time as she has so many friends and introduced me to some awesome people and great nightlife spots.

Her place is great, very clean and I always felt welcome and comfortable. One tip though...make sure you know what dish you're putting in her microwave as I almost blew it up :). Overall great time and looking forward to hanging out with her next time I'm there.

  • The place is really good, clean and calm. Portia and her mam are very hospitable and friendly. The room is really small, but if you plan to be outside most part of the day it shouldn't be a problem. I enjoyed my time here.

  • Pros: Portia keeps her place very clean. Portia is very nice and has great communication; she's very fun to talk to.
Cons:The neighborhood in bed-stuy was poorer than I expected. I didn't encounter anything dangerous, but I definitely did not feel comfortable walking home at night. There are no coffee shops or nice restaurants in the immediate surrounding area, you would have to go on the subway for a couple of stops for that. I was a student and I didn't realize how small my room was, so studying was impossible. There are no chair/desk available in the room otherwise you have to study downstairs where the TV was on loud most of the time. As a student, I would recommend living somewhere more conducive to studying. I hadn't realized that no coffeeshop or library was in this neighborhood so it was very inconvenient. The A/C line sometimes has very loud obnoxious people that may ask you for money or harass you at night. I should have visited the neighborhood before I made my decision.

I love living a life that is full of adventure and new experiences. Music, art, foods are all wonderful adventures that can be very exciting to indulge in. Hence, living in Brooklyn enhances the excitement while adding a diversity that never gets dull. In my free-time I love to have a nice lunch or dinner at a trendy restaurant in Manhattan. When I crave a lovely glass of wine and some escargot the place I like to go is Balthazar. I also love sushi and foods that are spicy so there are many other wonderful restaurants to go to for that too. Music, music I love all types of music, especially Latin and world music. I also enjoy going dancing with friends or visiting an art gallery. The Broadway plays are fun to see too and afterwards, going home to Brooklyn is a nice escape from the big city. Having me as a host would be quite an experience because I understand what hospitality means; I have worked within that industry for many years and I take great pleasure in welcoming guests into my home. Besides visiting a big city and enjoying what it has to offer one also must be able to go home to somewhere that is quite relaxing and soothing to the soul. I also work as a real estate agent, so if you are interested in residing in Brooklyn for the long haul I can certainly help you with finding an apartment or home- p.joseph at hlresidential
