Kalamaja was recently chosen to "The 20 most hipster neighbourhoods in the world" by Skyscanner. The area is undoubtedly popular among locals, but has even received a lot of publicity in foreign media and therefore attracts many tourists. Even The New York Times has discovered the best places in Kalamaja. I recommend you to take a walk in this beautiful wooden house area with bohemian charm. Just some 50 meters from the apartment you will find one of the most popular Cafés - Boheem. Some 4 minutes walk away you will find Telliskivi Design District where you can enjoy Estonian design, take a glimpse of retro furniture or visit one of the nice restaurants (affordable prices and great food).
Some 50 meters from the apartment you will even find a tram stop (Telliskivi). Take a tram to discover the rest of beautiful Tallinn. I recommend you to take tram no 1 to Kadriorg. In this magnificent district you will find many parks and gardens, KUMU art museum (recognized as best museum in Europe in 2008) and the Presidential Palace.
The medieval Tallinn Old Town is just 5 min walk away. Take a walk to discover this best preserved medieval old town in Northern Europe with its churches, cosy cafés and restaurants, museums and the great city wall.
I will be delighted to give you more recommendations in order to plan your stay in Tallinn. In case I am not in Tallinn upon your arrival, you will be met by my friend who is a local guide in Tallinn so you will be taken care of!
In case you are not fluent in English, I also speak Swedish, Estonian and Russian.
The apartment is exactly as described, very clean and with a lovely minimalist Scandinavian style, yet well-equipped. Everything went well. We appreciated the free parking spot that was high enough for a jeep with a roof-box. The area is supercool (Shoreditch of Tallinn :-)), there's a bakery across the street and the Telliskivi compound with its bars and restaurants is very close by. The apartment is big enough for a family of 5. The kids appreciated the great selection of TV channels and free wifi. The balcony is lovely. Nice bedlinen and towels. Also great to have a dishwasher and a washing machine. The building is very quiet, we hardly heard the neighbors. The center is very close by, 10 min walk to old town. There's a supermarket 5 min away but we hardly needed it since some nice restaurants are within easy walking distance (we recommend F-hoone and Kukeke).
Nice location , nice decor. It has everything U need for daily life there. And Johan replies promotly often. We love the flat so much. It made our stay in Tallin memorable.
We loved the apartment! We were met by two friends of Johan, which showed us the apartment and gave us tips about the area. Johan himself did all he could to make us feel welcome, and even helped us get a cab to the airport when leaving Tallinn. The apartment was cozy, practical and very clean. We felt just like at home. It is quite central, some hundred meters from the old town, and the area where the apartment is located is very hip, and there are a lot of restaurants etc. a short walk from the apartment.
Although we didn't have the chance to meet Johan, we think he really deserves his SuperHost status ! We really want to thanks him a lot as he helped us because we had a problem with our car rental, he phoned every company of the airport to tell us what they had and it was really kind !
First, the indications were really good on how to come and enter his flat. Then one of his friend Karol came to tell us more about Tallinn and Estonia and we really appreciate that.
The flat is exactly as in the picture, it was really good to chill on the terrace and it's really bright and fully furnished !
Beddings are confortable.
Pretty close to the old town center (5/10 minutes walks top) and from the train/tram station and from a supermarket.
We were really happy to stay at Johan place. We felt safe, welcome, nearly at home !
We had such a wonderful stay here! The apartment was very clean and provided all that was necessary for a comfortable stay. Johan arranged for someone to hand us the keys and she told us a bit about Tallinn, where to go and what to see. He also left some maps for us, which was very useful! I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a pleasant apartment in a nice neighbourhood within walking distance of the old town.
If you're reading this from outside Estonia then you're half way to making a very good holiday decision to visit the country's beautiful capital.
I chose Johan's flat because we were taking a road trip from Tallinn to Riga and wanted somewhere to park the car safely whilst being only about 15 mins walk to the old town.
The flat is in a quiet neighbourhood with people strolling up and down outside at all times. The flat is very luminous and around midsummer never got really dark. It is well equipped and spotlessly clean. Leave your shoes at the door to protect the light coloured flooring. Johan's parking place is allocated and the lot has electronic gates.
We were welcomed by Johan's delightful friend Carol who spend some time with us offering dining and visiting suggestions. As good guests we followed them to the letter. Locally, F-Hoone (400m) was our favourite - a bar/resto in a former locomotive factory with a mainly younger clientele. Boheem is even closer (200m) but is really only for snacks. In the city, Porgu (down in vault) served up the best food and Hell Hunt was enjoyable because we fell in with other tourists. Order the (email hidden) in Kompressor - ask for one to be split between 2 persons - they are very filling.
Kadriog Palace and the open air museum are ideal for trips by car. If pressed for time hire a bike at the open air museum - the exhibits are widely spaced. The ballet at the opera house was fantastic (GBP 22).
I hope you'll enjoy Tallinn and Johan's flat as much as we did.
Driving tips - watch out if you have a TomTom satnav because in Tallinn it will send you up one way streets (the wrong way) or down dead ends - my map was up to date before I left. Also, take special care as pedestrian crossings are indicated only by posts - they are ubiquitous and not protected by lights and the paint on the crossings is faded.
