About this listing
We are a small family run guest house and writers’ retreat in a historic building dating from 1852, set among trees, with a stream running past our front lawn. Our house is only 3 miles from the beautiful town of Westport with its tourist amenities.
We have three large guest bedrooms all with double and single bed. They are also available as single rooms, especially outside of high summer season. The rooms have very different styles, each looking out on a different garden. You’ll find a desk and seat and comfortable chairs and a kettle to make that much needed cup of tea. The largest room has its own bathroom beside it. The other two share a large old fashioned bathroom: the room with the best view in the house.
We also have a new wooden cabin- "The Tigín", which is fully self contained, with double/single bed, shower, kitchen facilities, sitting area and writing desk. The stream runs past it and trees surround it. You will be welcome to our beautiful sitting-room at any time, whether you stay in the Cabin or in the house.
We offer 4 different experiences:
* Bed and Breakfast in a real family home in a secluded environment.
*The Tigín- a small but perfectly formed hideout -fully self- contained cabin with semi-divided living and sleeping areas (double or single bed), as well as fitted kitchen and shower room. There is a bed settee in the living area.
* The Artist’s Retreat – a creative space for anyone looking for a quiet working place or just time out, in the house or in the Tigín. This can be B&B, full board or self catering.
* Weekend Writing Workshops in a small group setting.
There is broadband available throughout the house.
We can take up to 8 people depending on cabin bookings.
We have a lovely sittingroom which guests are always free to use. If you let me know we'll light the stove for you.
This is a family house as well as a place where we welcome guests. If the kitchen door is open, you're welcome in! If it's closed, please knock.
For those elusive but wonderful sunny days, we have a number of different garden spaces with seating areas and tables. Should you wish to use the barbecue at any time feel very welcome.
Interaction with Guests
Our aim is to create a space for anyone looking for time out in a welcoming home from home or a quiet working place where you can be a total hermit or as social as you wish.
The big old fashioned kitchen/dining-room is the hub of the house and you'll be welcome there, whether to pass the time of day, share a hot drink from the almost always boiling kettle on the Aga or make yourself a quiet cuppa to sit with or take away.
.I('ll be delighted to share any information or help I can give you about the locality and what to do here. Sometimes sharing stories is what we end up really wanting to do!
Westport is a Heritage Town situated in beautiful countryside on the shores of Clew Bay. It's one of Ireland’s few planned towns and a walk around town shows how beautifully designed it was. The town is always bustling with life but still keeps that small town feel that’s so relaxing in these often stressful times. The sea and the Holy Mountain are at our doorstep. The Greenway goes from Westport to Achill and has become beloved by cyclists and walkers. Our local area is full of beautiful walks and stories from history. There's a strong community and people of all sorts including artistic, musical and sporty people are drawn here. What a lovely combination!
We are situated on the Leenane Rd. just 3 miles from Westport Town. Westport has a train station and Bus Eireann stops in Mill Street. There's a bus from Knock Airport. We're 5 minutes drive from town. There is a taxi service available if you want to go out at night. If daytime travelers don't have transport, I'm very happy to collect you and take you into town, if I can. Many people like to travel by bike. Cars can be parked in our grounds.

We assume that guests will treat us with the same respect for ourselves our house and grounds and our needs for privacy that we accord them. We share with a dog, a cat, several hens and some horses. If you want to bring another pet into this menagerie, talk to us first. We'll do what we can.
As in all buildings in Ireland, no one smokes inside our house.
I’m Róísín – your hostess and general organiser. From the first time our family set eyes on The Old Rectory at Knappagh we knew we wanted to share it with others…so this is a dream come true. I’ve written with and been involved in writers’ workshops on and off over the years and worked in amateur and community drama in one of many past lives. Having hosted and cooked for so many family and friends’ gatherings which included evenings of music and poetry and found our house offered a creative space in many ways, it seemed a logical step to extend our hospitality to the wider community.
These days I have a new partner in my son Maitiú. Maitiú is 25 and studying Performing ~Arts with Blue Teapot in Galway. When he's at home he helps keep the Togón clean and tidy and welcomes guests. This year he also plans to do a bit of gardening. The hens are his good friends because he looks after them so well.
