Interaction with Guests
I live on-site and would love to be there to greet you and guide you in your stay, when I'm not off at my community garden nearby!
The neighborhood can be hard to find, for some, but we think it's a total gem - not downtown proper, so parking is a cinch, but within walking distance of most of the epic sites like Sun Studio and Stax. The street is quiet and surrounded by local nonprofits like the Memphis Interfaith Association and the Memphis Food Bank. We'd love to do a voluntour, if you're interested in giving back while you're here!
We know you're going places and we love to help you get around! We've got tons of on-site parking for the drivers out there. If you're on foot, the house is within a few blocks of eight different bus lines, 1.5 miles from downtown, 0.4 miles from the trolley and just a short ways to catch the free shuttle to Graceland from Sun Studio! We also highly recommend Lyft, which just rolled out in Memphis :)
Other Things to Note
PLEASE, oh please bear with us, as I just moved into this place and it’s over 100 YEARS OLD. My wonderful friend Andy is my partner in crime as an innkeeper, and we're still getting the hang of things. He's got an adorable dog, Bentley who might come visit, as well. One day we hope to turn the house into a nonprofit center, so any support you give us gets us closer to changing this city for the better!
Smoking is completely cool outside on our spacious front porch and pets are allowed, as long as they're cuddly and you clean up after them if they have accidents ^_~
My boyfriend and I stayed with Jamie for three nights during the Beale St Music Festival. She was a wonderful hostess - welcoming, full of good Memphis tips, and an amazing cook. As a bonus, she has a very sweet, well behaved dog.
The house is big and old in a charming way. It's big enough that you will have plenty of privacy, if that's what you're looking for. We also had a great time sitting on the porch with other folks staying with Jamie. The room was exactly as pictured, plus an addition closet. It was extremely bright in the morning. If you're an early riser, you'll love it. If not, bring a sleep mask.
The neighborhood is a little rough around the edges. There aren't any restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc. in the immediate neighborhood the house is in, but you can easily get to areas where there are (5-8 minute drive to downtown, 10 minute drive to Cooper-Young, etc., 25 minutes to the airport). We walked to the famous strip of Beale St (about 25 minute walk) and downtown Memphis during the day, but didn't feel comfortable doing so at night. Uber's were easy to get and never costs more than $10, even during 2x surge pricing.
Overall, we had a great experience. I would recommend staying here for anyone who is looking for an affordable, but charming truly Memphis experience.
Jamie was very inviting and made us feel like part of the family as soon as we arrived. The house is amazing inside and out. Great front porch, and cool music memorabilia all over the place. The house was very close to downtown for easy access to Beale Street, Sun Studios and other Memphis attractions.
Jamie was an amazing cook ready with creative breakfast treats in the morning. She also provided some terrific recommendations for lunch, dinner, and late night options. We were very happy with our decision to stay with Jamie!
Jamie and her fantastic house were the epitome of "southern hospitality". Great location: easy to find from freeway and easy to get to riverfront and Beale St.
Room was great, even with a live-in guest....the King. Front porch was a great place to just hang and enjoy the neighborhood.
Lots of little extras (mmmm, Moon Pies) to make you feel welcome.
When I come back to Memphis...this is the place I'll stay again.
Jamie's place was a perfect match for our needs. The decor and atmosphere are absolutely charming; very appropriate to the artists after whom the rooms are named. All linens and bath accoutrements were fresh and clean. Her breakfast and coffee offerings were enticing and yummy. Anything you might need - a little room in the refrigerator, use of a microwave, wifi available, and to my surprise..... A television in the visitation room, but not in our personal room. I thought I was disappointed, but after the best night's rest I've had in years, I realized I was grateful for that fact. Jamie was very professional, yet always warm and personal in all her correspondence with me. The location is absolutely perfect, as far as I am concerned. You are not plagued with manic downtown motel traffic, trying to find a parking place. Yet, when you are ready to go downtown, your car will be just outside, parked seconds away. At that point, you are a five minute to ten minute drive from any place you might want to visit downtown in Memphis. If she'll have us back, we cannot wait to get back to The Elvis. Highly recommended for your stay in the city of Three Kings!
Unfortunately, this was not at all what my girlfriend and I expected.
-Uniquely decorated - The owner obviously put a lot of work into making the place cute & kitschy.
-1.4 miles to Beale St.
-In a very seedy part of town. (Think, "the club" on the car parked next to us.) We walked down to Beale St. and I'm pretty sure my girlfriend has not forgiven me for that. Word of advice - cab it.
-Never met the hostess. Only interaction was through text/email and weird post it notes all over the house.
-While chatting in the downstairs common area, we were told via text that we should "take it elsewhere because we were bothering other guests". The only house rule we were aware of was "smoke outside", so this confused us as we were told to "make ourselves at home" from the get go.
-The floors and bed squeaked SO LOUDLY. If we were "bothering the other guests" by talking quietly downstairs, then they must have been livid at the fact that every time I moved an inch on the mattress or tip toed to the bathroom, it made the loudest noise ever.
-Train station runs right by the house. If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs.
Summary: Cute house. Definitely more of a hostel than a B&B. Bad area of town. Hostess should post quiet times to house rules and/or be more clear about which areas of the house are for use by the guests.
