Our little gem in Hovsund, on the outer edge of Gimsøy in Lofoten. The sea is right outside the door, and Mount Hoven rises behind the cabin.

In winter you light the fireplace and watch the northern lights move across the sea. Clear view north, no street lights — you don't need to walk further than the terrace.

In summer: midnight sun, white sand beaches, fishing straight from shore.

The space
The cabin was built by my father around 50 years ago, in a small fishing hamlet on the north-west corner of Gimsøy. We've renovated it over the years without taking the soul out of it.

Inside: a bedroom with a double bed and wardrobe space, a small kitchen with fridge, oven and hob, a living room with a fireplace, and a bathroom with shower and toilet. Firewood and kindling are ready for you. We turn the heating on before you arrive, so the cabin is warm when you unlock the door — in January too.

Outside: a furnished terrace facing straight out to the sea and the northern sky, plus a barbecue.

Winter: The road is ploughed all season and you park right outside. We recommend renting a car — Gimsøy sits midway between Leknes and Svolvær airports, both around 40 minutes away. The nearest shop is 6 km. Bring warm clothes and ideally a pair of ice grips for your boots. It's dark, beautiful and very quiet out here.

Northern lights: The terrace faces north with an open horizon over the sea and no street lights nearby. On clear evenings from September to April you can watch the aurora from the cabin itself. Bring a tripod.

Summer: Midnight sun from late May. We also rent out a boat if you'd like to get out on the water.
