This cottage on a thousand acre farm in Connamara is breathtaking! We were so happy to return. The remodel is beautiful and everything feels new and clean. Kate is a wonderful hostess. The only thing I didn't like was having to leave!

We loved this wonderful house, and Kate was a great host. To begin with, we never would have found the place but Kate arranged to meet us at an easy-to-find landmark. She was there on time and led us to the property, where she went over the rules of staying there, including how everything works, the sheep, the peat, and the roads. She quickly responded to the one question I had. Second, the house. It is a lovely little house with all the Mod Cons one needs except TV and wireless, which were not missed. The beds are comfy and it has a great kitchen, eating area and family room. Every room offers lovely views of sheep, bogs, and forests. There are ample tracks throughout the property for walking. It's so sweet to wake up listening to the sheep calling to each other. They come close but really don't want to interact with people, so they don't pose any problems. Third, the location is great. It is right off the N59, a main east-west road that will take you from Galway to the edge of the Connamora National Park. The house is about 3 miles from the village of Oughterard, which has several grocers, good restaurants, a bunch of pubs, shops, and parking, and free wireless at a number of locations, so the lack of it at the house is no biggie. Fun things to do include a cruise on Lake Corrib to Ashmore Castle and Inchegoille Island; Aughenure Castle, a 13th century partly restored stronghold; Bridget's Garden, a formal Celtic garden; Kylemore Abbey; the Connamora Forest; and guided fishing trips on Lough Corrib. Less than an hour to the south is the Wild Atlantic Way (the coast road), and the villages of Barna and Spiddal, with shops, pubs and restaurants. Also not too far away is Rossaveal, and ferries to the Aran Islands. There is public bus service into town, and also in the Spiddal-Barna area, but you'd do best with a car if you're staying here. So the area is a great place to visit, and this house especially is wonderful. It is peaceful and homey, and it really did start to feel like home - I could easily live there. Highly recommend.

The house was clean, cozy, and spacious. It was quite remote, so there were beautiful views of countryside on all sides, but you definitely can't walk to the town for restaurants or shops. We figured out how to use the peat stove (after watching YouTube tutorials) and it warmed the house right up and was cozy. We were just a little surprised on arrival when the host's husband asked us to sign a 'contract' with common sense behavior rules. Other hosts I've had just told us what to do, and of course we obliged.

We enjoyed our visit thoroughly. The cottage is so private and the views are breathtaking. Several times, we tried to do some video or panoramic pictures and agreed that there is just no way to do it justice. You have the most amazing view of Connemara right from your table or bedroom! The baby sheep were so cute and we loved that there was no TV or internet to distract. It was quiet and peaceful! Kate and John were wonderful hosts. They welcomed us with bagels and jam, ran us through how to make the fire, and checked in whenever we needed them. They have just recently remodeled the cottage and it is gorgeous. We loved the floors and new staircase! We were able to tour the Central West part of Ireland from our little base there and have to say that we agreed, this is the perfect area. The nearby village of Oughterard was our absolute favorite. I would recommend this cottage for anyone who wants to enjoy nature and quiet living.

Splendid isolation is how we describe Countryside Cottage. This is a lovely and well-appointed cottage alone on 1000 acres of spectacular Connemara scenery. This is a working farm with sheep, horses, and peat harvesting, about 3 miles west of Oughterard. Oughterard is small, and with several good choices of pubs and restaurants. While there, we explored most of Connemara. The views and peace and quiet were just what we were looking for. We also enjoyed long walks around the property and evenings spent warming by a peat fire. John met us and provided a brief orientation--he was a gracious host. If you're looking for a relaxing stay with plenty of space and quiet--this is definitely a great choice. My wife and I would definitely return there.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at John and Kate's country cottage. The country setting was comfortable, delightful, and homey. It was a delight to go on evening walks without leaving the premises. As city dwellers, it was fun watching the sheep and seeing the turf processed.

Kate was wonderful, she was very welcoming. The cottage was just as described in the posting, absolutely perfect. It was located on a private farm so it was a very quite area, we only saw cars pass by 2 or 3 times, perfect area to hike as well. The town of Oughterard was a 5 minute drive and had everything we needed; a grocer, butcher, and about 4 pubs/restaurants to choose from.
