Quirky, homey, spacious, this is my home: a cabin in the middle of the city on the ground floor one block off the Plateau's most storied street. A quiet sleep with the mountain, Place des Arts, and the rest of the Plateau at your fingertips. Welcome!

The Space

This is a ground-floor flat in an old (1885) brick building in Plateau-Mont-Royal on a quiet block despite being one street over from one of the city's main commercial / nightlife streets. My home is spacious but cosy with the patina of hand-me-down furniture, the decor of global travels, objets perdus, and DIY art. Slanted floor boards and exposed brick walls frame the eclectic and unconventional vibe of my place.

Guest Access

The goods:
-super well located for visitors
-large kitchen with everything you may need for cooking
-great quality (and firm) queen size bed
-telephone for calls to Canada and the USA
-BBQ on back balcony
-unlimited high speed wireless internet network access
-nice layout; very spacious at 60m² (650 ft²)

Interaction with Guests

This is my home, not a hotel or a business. If you are staying here I am probably out of town or staying with my girlfriend (she lives upstairs). It's a pleasure to meet who is calling my home theirs but I'm far from intrusive. Don't hesitate to ask me for anything. I've been living here for eight years and know the 'hood by heart.

The Neighborhood

There is still a neighbourly feel here, despite many passersby going to/from boulevard Saint-Laurent. This area was flooded with Portuguese, Greek, and Jewish immigrants after WWII. There are still some of the older families on the block, noted by the single Catholic azulejos on some homes. Boulevard St-Laurent, or the "Main", still has some vestiges of this: eastern European delis, Armenian cobblers, Portuguese rotisseries. The immediate area is decidedly mixed anglo/franco. There is, of course, the Parcs Jeanne-Mance and Mont-Royal, such a short walk away. But equidistant is Chinatown. My neighbourhood? It's a mixed bag and I love it.

Getting around

Have a look on the map and you'll see how close I live to:
-Parc Mont-Royal (runners, you can be at the top of the mountain in 20 minutes from the front door!)
-McGill University and l'UQAM
-the Quartier des spectacles and Place des arts (4 1/2 blocks!)
-boulevard St-Laurent (the Main) and rue St-Denis
-General, Royal Victoria, and Hôtel Dieu hospitals

You can see on the map that it's easy to get to the Village, the Mile End, the Quartier latin, and the Jean Talon market.

If you're DRIVING, there is frequently free PARKING space in front of the apartment on the street--just watch out for the correct days and times. If you play it right (depends on the timing of your stay) you can park a car right in front of the door for days at a time. Have a look on the street view to get a better idea.
The green and orange metro lines are both a 15 minute walk away, but the apartment is so much in the thick of things, you may not need it.
Plus, there are three BIXI (public bicycle system) stations within three minute's walk from the front door.
The closest (one block) north-south bus line (# 55 to/from Metro stations St-Laurent and Place des Arts) is part of the city's 10 min. max. programme (you won't wait for more than 10 minutes). This also includes the du Parc bus (#80) which goes up to Outremont and Mile End.
The #144 takes you crosstown to the west side of downtown.

Other Things to Note

There are a couple laundromats five blocks away. They're noted on the guidebook. There's a clothesline for in the summer or, if you prefer, drying lines in the bedroom for winter.

  • I rented out Chad's apartment for my mom and sister to stay in while they were visiting Montreal for my graduation ceremony (I live in my own apartment right around the corner). Chad's place was just like the pictures depicted: beautiful, rustic, and full of personality! Even though the apartment is 1 block off St. Laurent, it was dead quiet at night, which made their stay very relaxing and peaceful in the evenings. Unfortunately, Chad was traveling during our stay, so we never got a chance to meet. However, this was not a problem since I am extremely familiar with Montreal and was able to contact Chad whenever I needed, and was met with very quick and friendly responses! All in all, the trip went as smoothly as possible and I couldn't be happier!

  • Another terrific stay with Chad, this time in his lovely downstairs space. This space is pure Montreal, from the vintage typewriters, to the alluring artwork, if you're looking for the Plateau experience, look no further. Loved staying here and I plan to do so again.

  • We had a great stay at Chad's apartment. The space is definitely curated to be unique and to feel homey, and it successfully replaces all of the austerity I associate with hotel rooms and replaces it with charm. We did almost all of out travel by foot over the weekend, and the location was excellent both for exploring the surrounding area, which has lots to see, and for getting to downtown (a 15ish minute walk). I also thought that the apartment was amazingly quiet, even on Saturday night, even though it seems close to a busy night-scene. The bed was comfortable, the small back porch was nice, and we definitely enjoyed the fresh coffee, which Chad left us, while we lounged in the kitchen. Would definitely recommend for your visit to Montreal if you like unique spaces and you want to be centrally located.

  • Neighbourhood is in a good location. One street away from restaurants. A very artistic and rustic place. Seems to have travelled back to the 80's when you step into this place. It's either you love it or hate it. A good host.

  • The reservation was canceled the day before arrival. This is an automated posting.

    Response from Chad:

Cyril made his reservation request three days in advance of his intended
arrival. Initially, the dates he was looking for (for his eight-day visit)
were perfect and I accepted the reservation the same day as the request.
However, the following day my plans changed quite unexpectedly for the
final days of his planned visit and I needed to either alter the
reservation or cancel. After speaking with Cyril directly on the telephone
it became clear that a cancellation made the most sense for him. There was
a slight glitch in the plan though because cancellations need to be done on
the website and cannot be done with the smartphone app. I was travelling at
the time and did not have access to a computer. So, I did not make the
cancellation until the day before his arrival. I had communicated this with
him, though, and he was able to nevertheless arrange for another spot the
    day prior.
In sum, Cyril made a reservation request three days in advance and I let
him know that I needed to cancel the following day. He found a place to
stay and I paid the penalty. It all worked out well.

  • Chad was an excellent host. The apartment was very cool, felt larger than pictured and was very comfortable. Arrival and departure were hassle free, we appreciated the ability to come and go on our own schedule. The apartment was very well located, within walking distance to main street and the metro, bixi bikes right at the end of the block. We found street parking for our entire stay, free of charge, without a problem and walked or biked everywhere we wanted to go. Overall, the place had a very relaxed and welcoming vibe, we had a great time.

  • Great place to stay, forgot to leave heat on got a bit chilly in the evening.

    April 2014
    Response from Chad:

This was John's second time at my place. There are clear instructions on how to adjust the heat both in the house manual and in a note I leave in the entrance. All guests are free to adjust the heat to their liking. But, in the winter, don't forget your slippers!

  • Chad's place is great. Sexy art and whimsical decorative touches abound. The location is super convenient, and Chad and Emily are both easy to communicate with. A very comfy spot. I can't imagine staying elsewhere in Montreal.

  • Chad's place is very cozy, filled with art and vibrancy, and embodies an intimate spirit of what Montreal means to me, as a former resident and fan. Amazing location, right in the heart of the action yet amazingly quiet. So great and would love to stay again. Thanks for your prompt responses and clear facilitation.
    A la prochaine...

  • Chad's place is great. Very warm, cozy, and a great location. If you like having no TV and no car, this is a great place. This is where I'll try to stay if I get another chance.

I am a traveller and I know what it is like to need a comfortable place to be when away from home. I have been using AirBnB since 2010. I have stayed in people's homes using AirBnB in five different countries. The listing "rustic canadiana in urban milieu" has been my home since 2006. Life takes me to other places for certain periods of time and to help pay for the rent, I let it out. When I'm not in the city, my girlfriend, Emily, will take care of everything. I remain accessible by phone and e-mail just in case. The other listing, "cute, bright, simple, on two floors", is Emily's flat above mine. While she is away, I make it available to others. Please take care to read the reviews and references for unbiased takes on the two spaces. As a long-time traveller and as an AirBnB host, I have a great deal of respect for other people's spaces, as I like for others to have for my own home. I don't expect much when I stay elsewhere and I'm pretty resourceful. That being said, I like meeting people and it's a pleasure to be able to have a face connection with the place I stay in. N'hésitez pas à vous présenter en français. Je suis bilingue. Puedo leer en espanol tambien.
