Humble and fresh sleepout in the garden is about having a simple and fun time in Barwon Heads without spending an arm and a leg. Heart of town with shops around the corner and estuary beach at the end of the road!

The Space

Its essentially a one bedroom "bungalow" perhaps known in other countries as a cabin or cottage in seaside town of Barwon Heads Victoria. Located in the centre of town 400m to river beach and 1km to the surf beach!

Having traveled a bit myself, and noticing the lack of hostels and affordable holiday accommodation in these areas, I thought it time to share the little - and very humble- escape space in the back yard.

While living elsewhere, the house was rented, but I always had the benefit of using this when I needed a bed or respite surfing time . Now I live in the house, and think it would be great to offer the type of accommodation I would have liked while traveling. Friends and friends of friends have also often enjoyed a little independence.

The room is quite spacious, ideally suited for singles or couples, but sleeping up to 4 at a squeeze. There is a separate - (you go outside and walk a couple of metres ) shower, toilet and laundry/ kitchennette, sometimes shared with my office space during the week. Looks out to the garden where you are welcome to join in reaping the small benefits of the veggie patch.

There is access to wifi (if I can work out the passwords) and off street parking in the driveway - though most of us park in the street, and it is all very relaxed. There is a push bike to borrow (well there are 2 of them but one is for kids) so you can nip along to shops or enjoy a ride along the beach. Bedlinen and spare towels provided, and basics kitted out in the kitchenette.

It would suit people who want a weekend escape or travellers on the way to the Great Ocean Road or surfing the coast. Barwon Heads is a small town (well a few thousand people now) 20 minutes from Geelong. Its greatest attraction is the surf beach, but many also enjoy access to Bellarine Pennisula wineries and wetlands, or just wandering the town, with cafes and restaurants, bakery and supermarket to meet all your eating and dining requirements.

Pretty friendly place with a few 'characters' and good neighbours who will keep an eye out for you and help you enjoy the stay as much as they do for me! Let me know if there is anything else I can tell you!

Guest Access

Own bedroom and relax space separate from the house with external access to the bathroom and kitchenette. The bathroom and kitchenette are shared with the architectural studio a few days of the week during the day.

Interaction with Guests

Sometimes I am here, sometimes a couple of staff members are here sharing the amenities during the day.... and sometimes I am away or in Melbourne and you are on your own! When here the interaction is as much and as little as you like - though I may water the garden or potter near the bungalow when required.

The Neighborhood

Mmmmm Barwon Heads is seaside, surfing, kids, adult dinners and cafes.... quirky characters, relaxed atmosphere.
It is nicely located to explore the Bellarine or go further west to Surf Coast and onto the Great Ocean Road.
Hopefully you leave feeling relaxed, fed and watered and happy!

Getting around

Public transport limited but McHarry's run the services to get here.
Bikes available to borrow!

  • Lovely comfy bed in Barwon Heads bungalow. The feeling is like staying in your friend's spare room. I love airbnb for this trust.
Great location, and everything we needed.

  • We had a lovely stay in Kim's bungalow. It is a close walk to the beach and the town centre. The bedroom and kitchen/bathroom were tidy, with a great book collection, and the basic cooking facilities suited our needs well. Our brief interaction with Kim was very pleasant.

  • Kim's bungalow is lovely and light with a comfy bed, and a good little kitchenette. It's also very close to the shops. We would definitely stay again.

  • Kim's bungalow sleepout is in a great location very close to Barwon Heads shops and main amenities. The bungalow is lovely with outlook to the gorgeous garden and the bed is very comfortable. We would definitely stay again. Kim was also very flexible with check-out and in times.

  • Kim was a warm and friendly host, the room had clean sheets, and looked out onto a pleasant native garden. Unfortunately the room, kitchen, and bathroom weren't very clean with plenty of cobwebs, dust, and the occasional spider. The fly screen door had plenty of holes in it, which should be an easy fix - albeit was lucky enough not to have any issues with mosquitos. I'm not sure if the room's primary purpose is for accommodation or storage, with plenty of dusty boxes stacked in there. At the end of the day, this is budget accommodation, but a bit of cleaning wouldn't take long and would make it far more comfortable.

  • My getting-on-a-little-bit Dad stayed for 10 days while the rest of the family was camping at the campground. Great comfy little bungalow for those looking for a more-than-reasonably-priced option close to shops, cafes and the beach. A wonderfully homely feel. Added bonus of a bike if Dad wanted to go a little further afield. Kim was very welcoming to us and my Dad had a very relaxing stay. It got a bit hot on very hot days (no aircon!) but I figure that you can't have everything when you're on a tight budget. I wish there were more places like this around! :-)

  • Kim was very helpful on information of the local possibilities. And a good sense of giving her guest privacy. Also access to wireless was a great plus and free use of bike to explore the surroundings.

  • Kim's kindness and the comfort, convenience and quirkiness of the bungalow - and the more than reasonable price - made this stay a definite airbnb goer. The tasty bakery around the corner and spectacular beaches nearby gives it bonus points!

About
Friendly and busy person who has travelled and lived overseas a little bit, and one day will get time to do more. Running an architecture practice in Barwon Heads and working in Melbourne a few days a week, but still time to potter in the surf and enjoy the abundance of friends and other relaxing things Barwon Heads has to offer. Love coffee and reap the benefits of having a good few places here and exploring Melbourne's best laneways for the same and abundant food choices. Friends are often visiting and use the house as their own home which means it get pretty social and fun around here, kids playing totem tennis, coits and twister, adults playing a bit of bocce while enjoying a refreshing evening beer or G&T ( I sound like an alcoholic!!) . Loved Spain and Mexico for their relaxed and friendly lifestyle, fresh flavoursome foods, but equally love Ireland and Scotland for their humour, music and wild landscapes, then there are those Nordic countries for such good socialist principles and refined architecture, and Jerusalem for its uniqueness. But still to explore - Japan, India, Bhutan.... well they are my next hopes!! In the meantime welocme travllers here instead
