Your British born host, Penny Cox Ray, has lived and worked in Bermuda and the Caribbean for almost 40 years.
Penny will ensure your stay at Portsmouth is a memorable experience and can provide information about Nevis and all the activities available.
She can arrange car hire in advance of your arrival and recommend dining options around the Island.
Nevis is a 36 square mile (96 square km.) unspoiled island jewel located in the Caribbean Sea 200 miles south of Puerto Rico and just west of Antigua. The Island is dominated by Nevis Peak which rises to a height of 3,262 feet in the centre and is encircled by one main Island road.
On his second voyage to the New World in 1493 Christopher Columbus spied the Peak covered in clouds, which he thought was snow, and named the Island “Nuestra señora de las nieves” or “Our lady of the snows” - hence the name Nevis. She is also affectionately referred to as “the Queen of the Caribees”.
The interior of the Island boast a lush rain forest while on the Caribbean side there are miles of unspoiled quiet beaches.
The capital Charlestown is a charming town with many historical buildings , including the birthplace and childhood home of Alexander Hamilton, the first United States Secretary of the Treasury.
The average air temperature is 79F (26C) with humidity of 71.5%. An average annual rainfall of 55 inches contributes to the lush green foliage and abundant wildlife. You will find goats and donkeys wandering along the roads, as well as the green vervet monkeys which inhabit the Island
The unspoiled charm of Nevis allows visitors to step back in time to a quieter way of life which is unhurried and relaxed.
A few years ago when enquiring in a local hardware store when they expected to receive a shipment of screwdrivers, your host was informed by the sales person “the boat fetches when she fetches” – that says it all – the ultimate relaxation of this magical island.
