We enjoyed all aspects of our two-night stay here, from horseback riding with Chema to the tasty and nourishing meals cooked by Marga to conversations by the fire in the evenings. Overall, a wonderful place to relax and explore.
Chema and Marga were wonderful hosts. Prior to our arrival at 'A Sustainable Lifestyle', Chema was in constant discussion with us over directions, tidbits of information and answered any questions we had. Upon arrival, we were met with peaceful and beautiful grounds. The home was clean, quiet, and well kept. Marga prepared us a coffee and cake once we arrived after a long day of travel into the mountains. We booked three days but unfortunately had to leave a day early because of a family situation. Chema's intellectual conversations and Marga's homemade foods definitely made this trip memorable.
Chema and Marga were great hosts. They were accommodating to us arriving late. We learned a lot about sustainable living and enjoyed their home made goodies.
Looking forward to staying in touch with them.
We spent 4 nights at Casa Tordesillas with Chema and Marga. The property is incredible with the sun setting into the Pacific behind The Whale's Tail at Ballena Marine National Park and the us rising in the east over the mountains. I rose everyday at 5:30 am to catch the sun's emergence over the mountains and through the hills outlined in mist. Chema is a wealth of information and we thoroughly enjoyed the discussions with he and Marga and the accounting of their journey and plans for the future. They are both truly inspiring. Maria's meals were innovative and outstanding. The road was washed out when we arrived ans was difficult to navigate even with the 4 wheel drive but was fixed the day before we left and was no problem going back down. We enjoyed our hikes when there and would definitely recommend it to others. Chema and Marga are a privilege to meet and we will never forget our time with them and hope to return.
Un gros merci à Chema et Marga qui nous ont permis de partager un peu de leur mode et lieu de vie. Le site est magnifique, et la cuisine de Marga délicieuse.
From the moment we walked into this amazing home, surrounded by beautiful mountains, we felt totally cared for in every possible way.
Chema is a natural educator, passionate about history, horses, science and organic farming, while Marga is quietly preparing food, managing the horses, working in her garden, and coming up with delicious menus every day. Truly, the food is so delicious, locally grown, and healthy. We (myself, 2 daughters aged 16 and 21, and husband) went for hikes each day, and came back to find a beautiful lunch prepared for us, or a cake made in the afternoon, which we greatly appreciated. The house itself is a labor of love. It is beautifully designed, and literally built by hand with great care for details.
I learned a great deal from Chema about training horses, sustainable organic gardening, and the history of the region.
The road to the region is stunning in itself. Coming from San Isidro, the road winds through the valley, up into the transition zone of jungle and clouds and great vistas. We enjoyed all the other guests as well, everyone sitting together for candle light dinners and great conversations. This place is a gem, and we will cherish our 3 days and nights with Chema and Marga always.
After some miscommunication and getting lost prior to arrival, I arrived to find the road washed out about 3/4 mile down the mountain from their home. Charma walked down in the dark to meet me and to try to help me drive the rest of the way but we could not make it and had to carry my things up the muddy mountain in the dark, which was not fun for anyone. But Marga graciously met us and fixed a nice meal even at the late hour. They helped me deal with the SUV and were incredibly kind, generous and honorable for the rest of my stay. Marga does cook wonderful, delicious and healthy meals and her kindness was most touching. I had to cut my stay a little short but wished I could have stayed longer and wish the road had been in better shape, but that was certainly not their fault and they did everything possible to accommodate that. I highly recommend when the road is good!!

About the Host, Chema Y Marga
We are native from Madrid, Spain. Residing in Costa Rica since 1976, following a sustanable way of life. We offer holistic health and sustainable practices seminars. We also offer horse back riding for experienced riders and nature hikes through the tropical forest and to the local waterfalls and pools.
For us to have a guest is a way to share our way of life, to promote a sustainable life and to make friends.
Our main object is two fold, first is to simplify our way of life by practicing sustainable techniques and regenerative activities; second is to be minimizing our impact on the planet, that is, that our ecological footprint would be less and as we see it, is about quality of life instead of standard of living.
