Jack and Jill went up the hill!

Apartment - Private room · Carrer de Ramón y Cajal, Barcelona, Catalonia 08012, Spain

The Space

To start with, let me tell you a little more about this wonderful neighborhood:

You walk by Gaudi's houses on Passeig de Gracia and you start climbing the hill to the neighborhood of Gracia, the artistic and intellectual area of Barcelona. It is the Barcelona's Montmartre, a 30 minutes' walk to the center, or 5 minutes on the subway (the flat is close to 2 subway stations and a bus stop to the beach).

Once upon a time, en 1628, the village of Gracia was built around the parish church, and became a district of Barcelona en 1897. Montserrat Caballe, Moncho (the king of bolero) and El Pescaílla (singer and guitarist: rumba and flamenco) are all children of Gracia.

Lovely Art Nouveau pedestrian streets and squares to promenade, the church of Saint Joan, the central clock of the Square of La Vila de Gracia that still rings the bells every hour, and that we can see and hear from our terrace...

Also, lots of tapas bars and restaurants, theaters, the famous Cine Verdi, the Teatre Lluire, and original clothes stores, bookstores, schools of art, creative writing, graphic design, dance, yoga, music, and organic food stores.. and we have the market with fresh fruits and vegetables, spicy olives... just down the street!

The neighborhood is very safe, and has playgrounds for children on the squares, where often musicians and magicians, come to play, too!

I will give you a detailed map of the city where, on the day of your arrival, we will do drawings of the things you want to see.

*** THE FLAT ***

The flat is in the heart of the neighborhood, a typical Gracia building from the 19th century recently renovated and very well taken care of.

It is 80 square meters, has 2 bedrooms (just you and me and Lion the cat in the flat), a fully equipped kitchen with a microwave, living-room, bathroom (shared with me), 2 terraces, and is on the third and top floor (-- no lift -- as in most buildings of the 19th century in Barcelona), for this reason it is very quiet and very sunny.

Your bedroom has a double bed, a night table, shelves for clothes, and access to a small storage room where you can leave the suitcases.

We also have heating, fans, a washing-machine, a hairdryer and an iron, so you an even get ready for a wedding!

And you will find bath towels as well, extra soaps and shampoos, breakfast, tea, coffee...

*** IF YOU ARE 3 ***

* If you are a couple with a small child, the bed is large enough.
* If you are 3 adults, for a few nights, 2 people can sleep in the bedroom and one on the sofa in the living-room. The sofa does not open but is quite comfortable for a few days, and has the view on the terrace.

The living-room has a terrace ( facing South) where you can have breakfast and lunch, and dinner in the summer, and also work, as we have Wi-fi.

*** SMOKING ***

And for the smokers, the terrace is a great place to take a break. Thus we keep the flat smoke-free.

I am a painter and like to decorate the whole space, so we are inside the painting instead of looking at it from the outside. I love theater and movie set, so I thought it would be fun as a Airbnb listing.

You will meet Mozart and some of his creations, Picasso, Matisse, Stravinsky, Molière.. It is all mainly collages of ecological papers on cardboard. I use a re positionable glue, so it is easy to move shapes of colors.

The neighborhood: everyone falls in love with Gracia
The terrace
The bed is very comfortable
The decoration
Lion the cat has a lot of success!

It is a walk-up to the top floor (third floor)
The bathroom is shared -- (but always very clean)

*** LION ***

My cat's name is Lion. He is 3 years old, so very dynamic and fun. The Maine Coons are often chosen by families, as they are very sweet with children (and with adults too!)

1. We are close to 2 lines on the subway:
* The green line at the Fontana station, which goes to most of the touristic places (Parc Güell, Plaça Cataluña...),
* The yellow line at Joanic, which goes to the beaches.

2. You can go to the beach of La Barceloneta vith the bus: the bus 39 stop is just across the street and is a 20 minutes ride.

3. The train station at Gracia, which goes to Sarria, Saint Cugat, Terrassa...

It is a 20 minutes' walk to the Sagrada Familia or the houses of Gaudi on Passeig de Gracia.

4. I have a bike that you are welcome to take for a ride, and if you are two people, you can rent the other bike for 12 euros in a shop just around the corner from the flat, (12 euros for 24 hours). Biking is definitely a great way to visit Barcelona, as it is quite flat and easy to get around.

You can:

1. Buy a T10 (a card that includes 10 trips for 9.60 euros), and with this card come to Barcelona (Station PASSEIG DE GRACIA), and then use the card for the rest of your stay, in general, as you walk or bike a lot, and do not use public transportation much.

From PASSEIG DE GRACIA, get on the green line of the metro and get off at the metro FONTANA. The flat is a 10 minutes' walk from the metro station.

2. The Aerobus (5.65 euros) takes you to PLAÇA CATALUÑA, the center, in half an hour, and from there it is a 10 minutes' ride on the subway to FONTANA.

4. A cab costs around 30 / 35 euros.

*** PARKING ***

Since Barcelona in now organized in green and blue zones, it is difficult to park.
1. The first option is the parking just down the street at 25 euros a day.
2. If you don't plan to use the car during your stay, you can park it at Val d'Hebron. just above the Parc Guell, for a few days. It is a safe neighborhood and just a couple of stops of the subway from the apartment.

*** THE HOST ***

You will be sharing the flat with me and my cat! I am from Paris and been living in Barcelona for 8 years. I am in the process of starting my own company: the most surrealist cruise ship in the world: it is a giant art installation / gallery / floating amusement park for adults and children, where each cabin is fun and unique, -- all built and decorated by international artists, and we'll practice all the arts as we travel via rivers and oceans around the world -- music, acting, yoga, pottery, aromatherapy, creative vegan foods...

Until then I am in Barcelona, preparing the project, and I will be happy point out the sights you don't want to miss, and the bars and restaurants for good tapas and paellas.

I worked as a tourist guide during the last summers, going to the monastery of the Montserrat, the Dali Museum in Figueres, Girona, the Costa Brava and medieval villages, so I can answer your questions about the best times and most enchanting places to see on those trips.

  • The funny thing is, I had the feeling, even before I met Carine, that we were no strangers to each other. Thanks to the website I knew lots about her, even what she looks like and she knew nothing about me.
    Now she does.
The apartment is situated in very nice neighborhood.
I had a wonderful time, Carine was very thoughtful and gave me good information. I felt very much at home, also thanks to the cat.
I certainly prefer staying with her over any hotel.
    It was a good experience…
    Thanks Carine

  • She was truly a lovely and exceptional host, made the whole experience more rich. Carine was thoughtful and fun to hang out with. The apartment itself is a work of art, and very comfy to spend time in. It's location couldn't be better, Gracia seems like the ideal neighborhood in Barcelona, laid back but still exciting. Perfect place to stay while visiting!

  • Our extended (three weeks), and off-season European trip was Boston to London to Toulouse to Barcelona, back to London, then home. First two stages, we stayed at my daughter's house in London, and good friend's house in Toulouse..both familiar territory..Barcelona, not so much. First time trying AirB&B, first time Barcelona..and there for four days, including New Year's eve.

I read many of Carine's Reviews, prior to booking, so had a feeling about the place and the host, and was attracted to the slightly off-beat tone, description, photos, etc.

So glad I followed my intuition. Our stay with Carine was magical..great, great location, please see earlier reviews from other guests. Great host...Carine is an artist, and her apartment very much represents her. Art in progress, art finished...art and expression everywhere!!

Had just spent time at the Saachi Gallery in London, and thought her art would be great there. Suffice it to say, we developed a bond much beyond bedrooms and bathrooms with our lovely host...and we spent New Year's eve together, spoke about many things, and watched the New Year come in from her balcony!!

For us, it was the experience we did not even know we were looking for. Way beyond seeing Barcelona...we, of course, DID see Barcelona, and spent several nights at the Placa next to our apartment...eating Tapas and actually feeling like we were in "our neighbourhood" Carine left us everything we needed to be "on our way", in the morning, including fresh baked bread from the local bakery, coffee, and memories of conversations from the previous evening.

As an aside, I am from Holland, although I have lived in the US for many years..so my review reflects both my cultural backgrounds. Hotel stays are never what I enjoy, and I generally stay with friends, if the friends happen to be living in the places I want to visit. In this case..no friends living in Barcelona..but now, I/we made a friend living in Barcelona, one we would be excited to have visit us in Maine, should she every decide to do so.

    Wonderful stay..thank you Carine!

  • Carine is the most helpful, delightful and tactful person, and the place is not only ideally located to explore Barcelona but also an unusual delight in itself.

    December 2013
  • Carine is a very very great host! We really enjoyed our stay with her. The flat is simply amazing and offers everything you need to have a great stay in BCN! Thanks a lot Carine for everything!

  • Bonsoir,
    Merci Carine. Sylvie et Vincent

I am French and have lived in Barcelona for 8 years. The city has given me so many opportunities and the way of life I enjoy today is easy going and creative, with plenty of beach time in the Spring and Summer. I paint and do collages with Japanese papers and various materials. I love literature, music, going to the gym and socializing... I also work as a tourist guide in the summer, so will be happy to answer your questions about Barcelona and give you a good map of the city. I can also take you on board of my day trips to the Dali Museum in Figueres and to the medieval villages of the Costa Brava...
