The house is situated at the edge of the village which is the start of the Haut Languedoc National Park. Walk out of the house and in 3 minutes you are in the vineyards and hills around. This is a medieval village dominated by the ancient church whose bells ring out the hours. Most of the local families have lived here for many generations. There is a good bar restaurant in the village which serves food all day. There is also a small grocery/bakery. The village has public tennis courts. This area is famous for its cycling and within a mile or two of the house are numerous chateaux where one can sample the wines and carry home a bottle or two on the bicycle! There are many historic sites in the vicinity and charming villages such as Roquebrun with its Mediterranean garden and Olargues with its cobbled streets. There is river swimming at various beaches within a mile or two of the house and the Mediterranean is less than 20 miles away. There is a major canoeing centre at nearby Reals and one can also spend an enjoyable day canoeing from Roquebrun. A visit to the twice weekly market in St. Chinian is a must but most awe-inspiring has to be sight of the towering hills of the Haut Languedoc National Park. The evening light on those hills is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. The restaurants in the area are superb and inexpensive and one is spoilt for choice. The city of Beziers with its bustling streets and tragic history has many art galleries and historic buildings. We are close to the Canal du Midi and love to cycle along the canal to one of the nearby Mediterranean beaches or small villages on the canal. The area has everything to offer in terms of outdoor and cultural activities. Barcelona, Marseille, Nice and Andorra are less than a 3 hour drive away.
There is a twice daily bus from the village to Beziers which has a train station from which one can travel by tgv to Paris or Barcelona. There are also regular trains to Nice, Marseille and areas around France.
