About this listing
Your private single room is in a 2 bedroom period stone cottage in the beautiful Lune Valley, nestled directly between the Lakes District and Yorkshire Dales.
Your room is newly renovated - with traditional furnishings and pure linen bedding.
A quick drive to both the Lakes District and the Yorkshire Dales and a short stroll to banks of the River Lune - nestled beside the A683 - originally the cottage belonged to the Manor House and then was converted in the early 1980s to the current layout which is atmospheric as it enjoys a central position within the historic village of Melling.
* Please note this listing is for the single room *
(There is also an additional fold out single guest bed available for an extra £10/night, which can be booked in addition to the spare room).
We love hosting guests through airbnb. Everybody's so friendly and we enjoy swapping tips of best places to see and visit.
Everyone is welcome. We are ESL and disabled friendly (n.b.your bedroom and the shared bathroom are upstairs), as well as LGBTQ and straight friendly. We are members of the National Trust and love history, storytelling, the arts, music (Bronwin is learning harp) and world cultures. Our home is relaxed and friendly.
For your breakfast we provide a basket of 2 free range eggs and bread (and/or porridge if you prefer), coffee/tea and spreads for you to prepare at your leisure. You are very welcome to make use of the kitchen at any time - and please help yourself to tea and coffee (But best byo dairy if you don't like almond milk). The cottage is attractive, full of traditional furnishings and cottage touches. It is a charming traditional building that includes an open plan living room, smart TV, feature fireplace and Bosch appliances.
The quiet village location in the Lune Valley is idyllic. In the nearby market village of Kirkby Lonsdale just a few minutes drive away (also accessible by bus, as is Lancaster) Turner painted a view that has been described as the best in all of England. The waterfall walk in nearby Ingleton is equally scenic. Beyond the peaceful surrounds there are the nearby Dales and the Lakes national parks. The cottage is right on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales. You can be exploring the beautiful village of Ingleton in just a few minutes. Meanwhile the panorama of the Lakes District is only thirty (Kendal), or forty (Windermere) minutes drive away. Close to two areas of outstanding natural beauty, this is an uplifting place to be any time of the year.
There is a small grocer in the nearby village of Hornby and supermarkets within easy driving distance in both Kirkby Lonsdale (Booths) and Carnforth (Booths, Aldi).
Your own private bedroom, shared bathroom, lounge and kitchen.
Interaction with guests
We are happy to interact as much, or as little as you like. We both love swapping travel stories, although as writers we often work quietly on our own too. Evenings tend to be our peak chat times.
A fluffy white cat called Fluffyhontas also lives here. She loves to be patted and play.
A special place - having the fells, the dales, mountains, rivers and sea just a short drive away. No traffic jams, a slower pace of life and historic cities like Lancaster, Kendal and Windermere in easy access. All welcome guests to the area.
Bus service runs right past the house. During the day buses run every couple of hours, or so in both directions to Hornby, Kirkby Lonsdale and Lancaster. (Please note buses run daytime only, Mon to Sat).
The cottage sits beside the A683 in Melling, less than 2 miles to Wennington Train Station, with services to Leeds.
There are stunning drives in every direction. Drive to the Lakes District, the Yorkshire Dales, to Lancaster, York, Liverpool, Manchester and Scotland.
If you don't have a car we can pick you up from Wennington Train Station. For an extra fee we may also be able to pick you up coming to, or from Lancaster (£15) and/or if our schedules allow we can take you out touring to the Lakes District, or Yorkshire Dales some days for the cost of petrol and lunch for the two of us (but please check if we're free first as we may have other commitments) - just let us know if that interests you and we'll happily do what we can to help you have a perfect holiday.
Other things to note
Check in is from 6pm - 8pm (unless previously arranged).
We would ask that you please help us to maintain the cottage by using the provided shower curtain inside the claw footed bath so that water doesn't hit the bathroom walls and floors when you shower.
You are SO WELCOME to read any books stored in the cottage. If you could please replace them on the shelves before you leave that would be much appreciated.
Also, we ask you to please use the protector stands if placing hot pans on the kitchen bench - otherwise the pan leave burn marks on the bench.
Guests who are as mindful of the peace of this home as much as their own enjoyment are very welcome to come and enjoy this country haven.
Cancel up to 5 days before your trip and get a full refund, including service fees.

Happy, professional couple who are both writing novels and when they're not doing that.... Bronwin is a recent PhD graduate and teacher, Matt is a disability carer and exhibits his own photography. We both love the arts, music, films, theatre, philosophy, reading and writing, computer games (Bronwin studies them, but we don't have a PS4 in England yet, so no playing at home for now) friends, travel, fun, meditation, fair-trade, local and eco-friendly living (without being obsessive about it). We're open-minded, grounded and happy. We are Sydneysiders (from Australia) who moved to England in 2014 and we LOVE it. Our big thrill at the moment is visiting National Trust properties - being Australian all that history fascinates us.
