Guests are welcome to use grounds as seating spaces and tables throughout. Restoration.

Interaction with Guests
Interaction is made upon your arrival greeting and departure farewell. As this is our family home, you may engage family members on the property grounds as well.
If guests would like to join for morning coffee at the large family table on weekend mornings, they are welcome. During the summer months (beginning mid June), we will host Sunday brunch with homemade quiche Lorraine, fruit, good coffee and Prosecco.
You'll have to drive since it's the beginning of the rural area; close to the Interstate and easy to quickly get out to your wine country or Northern California destination. Approx. 83 miles east from downtown San Francisco - quick drive from Oakland/ SF East Bay or south of Sacramento.
If you are driving, load up your bike(s) for some backcountry cycling. Ground is flat. Or for water sports, bring your kayak, canoes, and jet skis for San Joaquin Delta and other waterways excursions. Or bring your fishing poles or go rent a boat for deep port fishing.
A major ski diving school for novices and experienced divers is approx. three exits north of Bella Donna.
There are major (big box) stores, cleaners, major grocer, drug store, etc. within 2 miles if you need that kind of thing. Trader Joe's is within 4 miles; Delta College and the University of the Pacific are within 5-6 miles each.
Other Things to Note
This is a country property in an agriculturally zoned area not within city limits; so make sure you are seeking a rustic environment with some animals, maybe a pile of leaves, some equipment out or a worker on grounds for property maintenance/ planting, etc. during your stay.
-Please make sure to wash dishes, glasses and pots/ pans before your departure from the cottage.
- Leave soiled and used items in a pile if possible.
-You can find a space to smoke on the grounds for smokers; yet please no smoking inside of cottage; just step outside.
-Take the time to rest, reflect, and get restored.
-If you have time, take a drive through this part of Central California and visit our wineries, farm stands, and downtown Lodi for food/ movies and other small towns. Great way to spend an afternoon.
House rules for your pet:
-Make sure your pet does not damage the cottage in any way; there is plenty of space (3 acres) to take your pet out onto the grounds. Pets love Bella Donna.
-If you have a pet please notify us through an inquiry in advance of making your reservation to address both host and guest expectation, needs, and the additional fee.
-Good communication is the key and we are glad to host both you and your pet.
We booked the wine country cottage on the fly during our trip through California and planned to stay four nights to relax, hang out in the garden, read, enjoy the pool, attend some wine tasting, cook dinner and just chillax.
Mary and David were very responsive and we were looking forward to meet them, which we did not but their lovely and very helpful daughter Hannah. When we arrived we could not immediately get hold of someone but when sending a text the door was opened within minutes. Already outside the property we realized that it was very near to the highway and therefore as noisy as you would expect. We did not understand this from Airbnb's map as this shows only the approximate location...
The property is designed as shown on the pictures. The cottage is decorated with love and the kitchen is fully equipped. In the fridge fresh eggs from the chicken in the garden were waiting for us as well as water, lemonade, butter and fruits. The bathroom would profit from an update and one would enjoy more using it when brought to modern standard.
As we expected a Tuscany like silent, laid back environment we decided straight away that we would not wish to stay the entire four days as planned. Thanks to the help of Hannah (the internet did not work in the cottage), we could discuss our thoughts with Mary over the phone. She arranged with Airbnb that the stay was shortened down to two days.
The place is nice and although some things are a little outdated, it can be a good starting point for people who want to discover the Lodi wine country and do not have any issues with heavy traffic noise.
The little loft at Bella Donna is a perfect place from which to explore Lodi wine country. And then bring your fave bottle back and enjoy it as the sun sets in this romantic estate. Mary and David were lovely, gracious hosts and made us feel very welcome. If you have a friendly dog, this place is fabulous as it is fully fenced and our male dog had a huge crush on their female dog, Isis, and they had a great time running around safely and checking out the sheep and the chickens. Highly recommend it!
We agree with the other reviews. Mary (we unfortunately didn't meet David) was wonderful! Their property is great and we enjoyed hanging around and taking in some sun. Their "puppy" (she's quite big) is sweet and our dog was pooped from all the playing after the weekend. The cottage is really nice. However, we didn't realize that the cottage is a loft/studio, the pictures don't show that clearly and we were a little surprised. So we quickly had to figure out where to have our baby sleep while we were still up and how to make sure cooking smells didn't linger .. but we made it work and had a good time!
David and Mary were very hospitable. The property was beautiful and we really enjoyed our time in Lodi and getting to know them too, as they happened to be in town. This was our first time using Airbnb and are happy to report that we'll use it again and hopefully come back to this same property. We felt welcome and taken care of. It was easy to access wineries and they had great recommendations for us.
David and Mary were wonderful hosts, and their place was exactly what we needed while we were in the area. We stayed there for a month, and got to experience lots of the nearby wineries which make delicious wines (we shipped home three cases!). The location is perfect - 1.5hrs to Napa, 2.5 hrs to Lake Tahoe, 2ish hours to Yosemite. We visited it all. Our dog also enjoyed his stay - they have a HUGE gated yard where our dog and their dog played together like the best of friends. Overall I would definitely recommend staying here.
Mary was a wonderful host, very welcoming and helpful. The property is beautiful and very well maintained. The apartment was clean and bright and conveniently located just about 15 minutes from downtown. Had a great stay and can't wait to come back again.
We had a great stay at the cottage. Communication was excellent, location was perfect. The cottage is adorable, except the rat traps on the kitchen counter and throughout the rest of the cottage. Their wifi was not working the entire 3 days which was pretty inconvenient. We resulted to watching one of the DVDs they had available which was nice since there was no wifi, however the dvd was scratched and skipped the entire movie. We ended up just turning it off and going to bed early. The toilet made a pretty loud ringing noise which required us to have to turn on and off the water each time we used the toilet. They did have an amazingly sweet dog that we had a lot of fun playing with. Overall it was a good experience, however it could have been a lot better. I am sure these random problems will be fixed in the future, because this cozy little cottage has great potential!
We delegated check in responsibility that weekend and did not walk through as we normally would to support and ensure the best for Alex and his wife. The issues with internet, etc are being corrected and DVD's are being replaced now that Alex brought forward publicly to our attention. We only wished we had feedback if that was possible during their stay. We would have done our very best to mitigate and address those issues right away because they deserved immediate attention as guests.
Come to our beautiful, historic and most elegant estate with a lovely cottage for you in the Central Valley near the Lodi Wine Country and University of the Pacific.
We like to travel and do interesting stuff: last year we were pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago in España walking from town to town across the gorgeous Spanish countryside (actually the Camino de Ignacio). This was the most challenging yet transformational engagement we have done as a couple.
On weekends we may work the property along with tending to sheep, lounging by the pool, and restoring different aspects of Bella Donna. After a hard day's work we like to head over to one of the 40+ wineries in our community. We have a few favorites.
We are busy executives during the week, so Bella Donna is both a place for retreat and restoration. Our friends LOVE to come out to our home and stay in the cottage or the guest room for a restorative getaway.
