Description

The space

Casita Laurita, built in 2008, is an architectural gem centrally located on one of San Miguel’s best loved streets, Calle Loreto. Open the door to this seemingly small house in the Centro and be amazed at the gorgeous, light, airy, beautifully-appointed casita, with terrace gardens, a gourmet kitchen, and plenty of places to lounge. Two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, plus an extra napping couch/bed in the studio. A convenient base to explore all of San Miguel de Allende, you may never want to leave the house.

English and Spanish-speaking house manager will greet you, show you around, and help you out. Maid service 2x/week.

Casita Laurita was featured in the Great Homes and Destinations column of the New York Times.

Built on three stories with terraces on top, the 2-bedroom, 2.5-bath house is an easy and flat walk to the jardin, near language schools, and steps away from the town’s famous artisan market. Great cafes nearby, as well as an organic market.

The 1000-sq-ft house is Mexican modern style, built around a central courtyard, with clean design and exquisite details. The house has up-to-date amenities (iPod docks, flat-screen TV, wireless) and dreamily comfortable beds. The top terrace has a lovely 360-degree view of San Miguel and its famous Parroquia church. A second patio with lounge chairs is private and cozy, perfect for dreaming, surrounded with lavender, jasmine, and other scented potted plants.

A sunny studio with a 13-foot wooden desk makes Casita Laurita a wonderful retreat for a writer. The gourmet kitchen is a splendid spot for a cook who wants to explore Mexico’s cuisine.

Guest access

Entire private house. You will get instructions to meet my property manager, who will give you keys, show you around, and get you settled.

Interaction with guests

I will interact only by email. This is your private house. There is a property manager to meet you and settle you in, and he is available when you need him. There is also a maid two mornings a week.

The neighborhood

Calle Loreto is one of the oldest streets in San Miguel, filled with artisans, cafes, and central to everything. Very safe neighborhood. Easy, flat walk to the jardin. Very centrally located to cafes, mercado, Aurora Design Center, Via Organica market, central jardin and Parroquia. Fantastic location.

Getting around

Easy walking distance to everything; cabs on the corner. Property manager can arrange private cars for tours.

Other things to note

Designed by noted Mexican/Norwegian architect Anja Fauske; appeared in NYT Homes section, also featured in owner's memoir, All Over the Map. Tall and narrow with lots of spaces to sit, read, dream. Kitchen with everything you need, from sharp knives to Le Creuset. Excellent linens, attention to detail throughout, book and film libraries. Parking lots nearby.

The Jewel Box really is lovely. People in the neighborhood are very friendly. Everything we needed and more was there. Breakfast in the morning on the kitchen, staying in a few nights for dinner, and an evening glass of wine on the roof deck made a nice balance between staying "home" and exploring San Miguel from this very convenient location. Laura's library is exceptional which made for some late nights staying up reading. With 4 levels, there were lots of various spaces to relax. Laura's suggestions for places to eat, places to see were spot on! Because we were in town at New Year's there were some nights that were quite noisy. A party next door one night that went on past 4:00am and a loud parrot next door made using the recommended earplugs a necessity. We feel so lucky to have had the use of this wonderful home for our first trip to San Miguel.

This home will truly impress you with its rustic details, modern finishes and comfortable rooms. There is an incredible amount of light throughout. It's location is far enough away from the main town activity but a very short walk to it. I'd recommend Casita Laurita to anyone visiting San Miguel. It is ideal for two couples.

Laura'a house was perfect for our weekend stay in SMA. She was very responsive and accommodating. The house was just a short distance from the city center on a quiet, lovely street. The house itself was clean, organized and a great size for two couples. The pictures don't do it justice! We hope to return in the near future.

We loved the atrium, the pretty dishes, the countertops, the lovely lighting, especially the pattern from the cut iron lanterns at night, the library collection (I enjoyed "Flirting in Spanish"), the art...the French press, the housekeeper ... so much more.

We rented from Laura the last two weeks in January. We had a wonderful experience in this lovely "casita". It is nicely situated on a quiet street near the center of SMA. We were able to walk everywhere-restaurants, theater, attractions, shopping etc. The kitchen is very nicely equipped, the beds comfy, east to light heaters for cool mornings. We hope to return!!

Laura's house was perfect! We all loved it and would stay here again! Location was the best, so close to the center but far enough away to get quiet sleep. Her house manager was so helpful and arranged all of our airport transportation. The house itself is adorable, the pictures don't do it justice. I will be visiting SMA again and would book this Casita in a second!

We truly enjoyed our stay at Laurita's house, everything was perfect, from the location, to how clean and equipped the house was. Just as an observation if you're expecting three beds, you will only find two; which are amazingly comfortable and one sofa that is in the studio, very capable to satisfy your resting time. 100% recommended.

Response from Laura:
So glad you enjoyed your stay! Thanks for alerting me to the bed issue; I changed the listing so it says 2 beds. A lot of people (especially kids) sleep in the studio, but it really isn't a proper bed. Thanks!
