The Space

Make yourself at home in this elegant and well-appointed 104-square-metre (1119 sq ft) apartment with high ceilings, wooden floors and fine architectural details. The 60-square-metre (645 sq ft) living room has 3 sofas (one of which is a very comfortable double sofa bed) and a spacious desk/dining area, which seats 10 comfortably. The spacious master bedroom has a kingsize bed (180 x 200 cm).

Computer, high-speed wireless internet and free landline calls to Europe and the USA. i-Tunes is packed with hundreds of hours of music from Abba to Zappa and from Adams to Xenakis. There should be something to suit most tastes.

There's also a DVD player hooked up to a widescreen TV (but without TV reception) and a decent selection of films. Sorry, I don't watch TV, so there's no cable - but have you really come to Berlin to sit in front of the television?

Third floor - no lift!

Eccentrically skinny bathroom. You have to climb up into the bath/shower. N.B. this is not suitable for frail people, people with mobility issues or unusually wide people.

There's a washing machine and a large walk-in closet with plenty of hanging space. The heating pipes run through this room, making it ideal for drying things. Hang your coats in here and they'll be toasty warm when you come to wear them. There's also an iron and mini (tabletop) ironing board and a hairdryer. In fact you should find everything you might possibly need in a home away from home. If not, just ask me.

There is an enormous, well-stocked kitchen with gas hob and electric oven, and all the equipment you might need to rustle up a delicious meal.

If you fancy eating locally, you can take your pick of a host of restaurants and cafés serving everything from hearty rustic Swabian fare, elegant modern German cuisine, old-fashioned French classics, tapas, Indian, Korean, Jamerican (yes, that's right), Thai and Vietnamese to the best falafel for only €2.50. There's a cafe on the corner that doubles as a chocolate emporium: sheer chocolate heaven!

The area is a foodie's paradise, with speciality delis and vintners galore - including a Rioja specialist - and reputedly the best coffee in Berlin. There is a supermarket around the corner and Berlin's best farmer's market at the end of the street every Saturday. And it's only a 20-minute walk to KaDeWe, which has one of the largest and best food halls in the Western world. And there's a dishwasher, so you don't have to worry about the washing up.

The flat is in the heart of bohemian Schöneberg, a two-minute walk from the subway.

My street is lined with speciality shops, selling vintage clothing, books, jewellery, antiques etc.

The area is packed with bars and cocktail bars, and Schöneberg's gay bars are a hop, skip and a jump away.

I may well be away when you arrive, but one of my friends will give you a warm welcome and explain anything you need to know. Make yourself at home!

No parties and no smoking please!

  • I stayed in Gerard’s apartment for a week, which was a fantastic experience. The apartment is located on a really trendy and hip street in Schoneberg and provides a very authentic Berlin experience. The size of the accommodation is really large with beautiful original features including high ceilings, wooden floors and large windows. The living area is bright and airy with beautiful
streaming sunshine coming through the windows in the evening. The bedroom has a really comfortable bed and is located at the back of the apartment, which makes it a very quiet and peaceful place to rest and sleep. The kitchen is very spacious and well stocked for everything you need while cooking. I rented a bike for the week, which you can easily lock downstairs in the courtyard. As a guest, you are spoiled with such a great selection of restaurants and shops nearby. I particularly liked Sudaka across the road, which is a South American restaurant that served up an unbelievably juicy steak with excellent service. I didn’t get to meet Gerard but he was an excellent host who was very responsive to my requests and made sure my stay was an enjoyable one. If you are looking for a authentic place to stay that gives you the experience of living in one of Berlin's coolest neighbourhoods, be sure to check out this apartment.

  • It´s a truly wonderful apartment. Lots of space, lots of sun! It is exactly as shown on the pictures with Gerard as the perfect host.
We also loved the neighborhood. Don´t miss to have a Foccacia at the Italian Restaurant at the end of the street.

  • I've spent a long weekend on my own in Gerard's place and I can only warmly recommend it. It is not a usual neutrally decorated, company operated rental apt, but the place where someone actually lives, appointed tastefully yet minimalistically.

  • We were a family of five staying in Gerard's apartment and we couldn't have been happier there. There was plenty of space for all of us and, most importantly for a bitter cold and stormy Berlin winter, it was warm and comfortable. Plenty of delicious coffee in the well-stocked kitchen and a stellar music selection on Gerard's Mac. Phillip, Gerard's lovely neighbor, gave us a warm welcome and Gerard, despite being on a road trip in the U.S., was extremely accommodating and attentive. Wonderful apartment with loads of character (including the quirky bathroom) and Gerard was a perfect host. Would definitely go back!

  • I stayed in Gerard's flat for a week in September-October 2013. It was my second visit there - and I enjoyed every day of the visit. Lovely combination of an old-style house and modern furniture and design. Really a lot of space, a reasonable price - and a perfect host. Would enjoy to come back as soon as possible ;-)

  • A great apartment, bright, spacious. A great neighborhood, restaurants, bars, market. And Gerard, a great host !
Merci Gerard. Je suis tomber en amour avec Berlin !!!!

  • My partner and I spent a great week in Gerard's beautiful apartment in June 2013. The flat is simply stunning: spacious, stylish, comfortable and well-appointed. Gerard's is a friendly and welcoming host who immediately made us feel at home. He was very professional to deal with also.

The apartment has everything you'd need for a stay of any duration. There is definitely enough space with high-ceilings and big windows. You can cook and eat in the big kitchen, relax in the living room and have a restful sleep in a quiet, airy bedroom.

The neighbourhood has plenty to offer in terms of bars, restaurants, shops and market. And with Berlin's efficient public transport you won't have any problems with getting around the city.

I have no hesitation in recommending staying in Gerard's apartment. We hope to be back there soon.

About
I love to entertain. I'm never happier than when I'm in the kitchen cooking for my friends. And that is reflected in my home: it is spacious, welcoming and comfortable. But I also love to travel. I'm travelling to the States a lot at the moment to research a book. So, why not make yourself at home at my place while I'm gone?
