About This Listing
Newly renovated with pristine, modern decor, the carriage house offers a private retreat in the heart of Jamaica Plain. Set in a quiet, off-street location, just steps from shops, restaurants, public transportation, parks and more.
Back in 1907, the carriage house was home to one of the world's oldest horses: Jeff, a 38-year-old "equine Methuselah," per a Boston Globe article of that era. While Jeff is sadly long gone, many of the structure's historic details have been preserved, including the original floorboards, a sliding stall door, and a pulley once used to lift hay up to the loft. Today, that hayloft is a bright 625 square foot studio apartment, perfectly suited for a single traveler or couple.
The carriage house is a stand-alone building, with a private entrance. As our guest, you'll enjoy full run of the apartment.
We have a Bose speaker compatible with your iPod or iPhone, and a flatscreen TV equipped with Roku and Wii. There's also a selection of board games for old-fashioned fun.
Interaction with Guests
We respect our guests' privacy, but are available to answer questions and offer assistance as needed, either in person or by email/text/phone.
There's so much to love about Jamaica Plain--we wouldn't want to live anywhere else! Below are some of our neighborhood favorites, and we are always willing to make additional recommendations!
JP boasts more green space than any other neighborhood in Boston, and it's well worth exploring. Take a stroll through Arnold Arboretum, a gorgeous living tree museum, or head over to Jamaica Pond where you can rent a boat, or join the joggers circling the perimeter.
FOOD AND DRINK:
For groceries, head to the local Whole Foods or the Harvest Coop. City Feed and Supply offers great sandwiches, high-end groceries and good coffee. Next door at the Purple Cactus, you'll find quick and healthy-ish burritos and salads. On the other side of Centre Street, Bukhara is a good bet for Indian food. Petite neighborhood favorite Vee Vee offers creative American fare with vegetarian and vegan options, and brunch on Sundays. Ten Tables is another much-loved dinner spot, though booking ahead is a must as it only has--you guessed it--10 tables. Attached to Ten Tables is the more casual TT Bar, offering excellent craft cocktails and bar bites. Just down the street, local gastropub Canary Square serves solid food and cocktails. Save room for an ice cream cone at neighborhood institution JP Licks.
For a unique selection of jewelry and other handcrafted items, don't miss Fire Opal. All the kids love our local toy store, Boing, and all the pets love the Polka Dog Bakery. Check out the incredible selection of hats at trendy boutique Salmagundi and dig for secondhand treasures at Boomerang. Fans of modern design will enjoy Room 68, while the well-curated and quirky selection of merchandise at On Centre appeals to just about everyone.
Catch a play at the Footlight Club, America's oldest community theater, or take a tour of the Samuel Adams Brewery (21+, suggested donation $2) and get the lowdown on craft brewing. On Monday nights, Bella Luna hosts a trivia night, and on Wednesdays, swing by Costello's Tavern for live band karaoke.
The 39 bus stops a block away, and the Orange Line (subway) is a 10-minute walk. (Green Street Station.) There is a Hubway bicycle rental station a block away. There is free parking on our street, and we offer off-street parking in our driveway upon request.
Other Things to Note
Because the apartment must be accessed by a short, steep flight of stairs (pictured), it is not appropriate for mobility impaired individuals. We are willing to accommodate children (and have a loaner pack n' play free of charge), but we are not able to assume responsibility for childproofing.
There is a wash-and-fold laundromat one block away.
No smoking or drugs anywhere on property; no pets; no unauthorized guests. We expect guests to be respectful of our property and the neighborhood. When possible, please remove shoes in downstairs entryway. Upon check out, please leave the apartment as close to how you found it as possible.
The host was super friendly and gave us a short tour of the carriage house. The house is exactly as described, and even look better as I really enjoy the setting of the room. The neighborhood is tranquil during the day and at night and is also convenient to both subway stations and to a beautiful pond where u can walk and boating. Overall a really good stay and would recommend anyone staying in or near boston at this place! Would definitely consider staying again!
Our stay at Tom and Sarah's carriage house was wonderful. The apartment was just like the listing and pictures. It was everything we expected and lots more. The neighborhood was great! Amazing coffee shops and restaurants were very close by. Tom and Sarah were lovely hosts. We would love to stay there again!
Our stay could not have been anymore comfortable! Best Air BnB experience yet. Sarah's place was homely, convenient and well thought out for guests.
Sarah was also very quick to respond to our questions. And, understanding when we accidentally lost our key!
The Carriage House was a great place to stay....An affordable alternative to downtown hotels with parking and a newly renovated kitchen- what more could you need? Sarah and Tom were great hosts who made sure their guests had all the essentials for a comfortable stay, from toiletries to a wii. We enjoyed exploring the the Jamaica Plains neighborhood as well as taking public transportation into the city, and would definitely recommend the Carriage House as a modern, tidy, and comfortable accommodation!
We had a very lovely stay at the Carriage House. The property was charming, clean and well-fitted with modern comforts and facilities. Sarah and Tom have done an excellent job with the interiors which are accurately reflected in the photos. Carriage House is located in a quiet neighbourhood within a short walking distance to a lively high street filled with cafes and shops and a 10-15 min walk to the local metro station with trains that take you straight to Boston downtown area. Sarah and Tom were very responsive and were fantastic and considerate hosts. I would definitely recommend the Carriage House to anyone thinking of a 2+ day stay in Boston.

Our hobbies include skiing, running, tennis (me) and golf (him). We both have a fairly healthy obsession with interior design.
