The Space

Grand reopening with newly remodeled kitchen!

Come and experience the real Portland. From the comfort of our 1907 house, it's an easy hop to just about everywhere!

There's easy access to bus and train lines, bike around town, or just stroll the Alberta Arts district - there's a park with a playground just up the street, and our Walk Score is 86. There's plenty of free street parking in our neighborhood, so your car will have a great place to sleep too.

Ordered too much food at one of Portland's 10,000 great restaurants? Come in through your own private entrance, and pop your swan-shaped tinfoil creations into the refrigerator. When you feel hungry again, there's a full kitchen complete with pots and pans, microwave, coffee maker, and all the dishes and utensils you'll need. Tucked into the nook in the back you'll find a washer and dryer, so you don't have to pack your entire wardrobe.

Looking for a quiet evening in? The cozy living room features an electric fireplace, a bookshelf stocked with light reading, and an entertainment system with a flat screen TV and DVD player. We even have some a Wii and some games for you, and a Netflix streaming account you can access through the Wii.

Feeling sleepy? The bedroom features a king-size bed with a memory foam pad, soft sheets, and a down comforter, and the sofa in the living room converts to a full-size bed. Have a crowd? No problem: there are two cots in the closet. Young kids? No problem! We have a pack-and-play, a high chair, and a full-size bath tub.

When you wake up, you'll probably be hungry again. Feel free to eat your leftover pizza, but we'll also have micro-roastery coffee and breakfasty items for you. There are a couple great grocery stores within a mile, so you can stock our kitchen with all your favorite foods, and cook while you are here, if you feel so inclined.

Everything you find in the apartment is for our guests to use. You will have your own unique code to get into your apartment; no keys to keep track of and carry around. Be advised that our little family lives upstairs, and the floors aren't made of soundproofed concrete, but we do our best to keep quiet.

Whenever we travel, we like to manage our own time, so we give you lots of space to do your own thing. You have your own entrance, so we can avoid those awkward half-conversations. If you'd like to chat, feel free to come find us. We both work from home, so are around most of the time.

Our neighborhood is great, there are SO many fantastic restaurants and great shopping areas and several monthly community events! We are within a quick walk to both the Alberta Arts District and North Williams St. Just a bit further out is N. Mississippi Avenue. The apartment is also just a short 2 miles up the road from the Convention Center and Rose Quarter. A quick bus ride whisks you there! If you have pets or kids, there's a park just a 1/2 block away where they can expend some of that energy.

If you want to go somewhere else, there's a bus stop about 100 yards away, and from there it's a quick hop to MAX. If you have your bike, we are right along one of the major Portland bike-ways.

  • We stayed in Ben and Becky's apartment for 4 nights and it really felt like home. They have everything you could want in a kitchen (appliances, cereal, milk, bagels, fruit, juice) bathroom (lots of towels, extra soap, extra everything else). The apartment felt brand-new and is just super comfortable. Our interaction with them was minimal, but Ben greeted us as we arrived, showed us the layout and left us to it. They even left us a nice bottle of beer which was perfect after a long drive. Highly recommended.

  • Great place to stay- very clean, well appointed, and comfortable. Nice area for walking to restaurants and public transit just around the block for getting all around the city. If you are inclined to stay in and do your own cooking, the kitchen is well equipped and very nice. They seem to have thought of everything a visitor might want.

  • Our stay at the Alberta Arts district apartment was perfect. My daughter, her friend and I were very comfortable in the space. it was large enough for 3 to 4 people. The apartment was stocked with waters, juices, milk, bagels, teas and coffees. We didn't need a thing. It was spotless and clean.
The bus was one block down the street, and the Arts district was a short walk away. We ate at a few wonderful restaurants, all a short walk to Alberta St.
The neighborhood is very safe and I went out most mornings early for a run down Prescott St. When Prescott runs into 15th St. there is a wonderful coffee shop and a nice brewery/restaurant that also serves breakfast.
The Apartment is a basement apartment and the family lives above it. They were very quiet and didn't intrude on us in any way.
I would stay there again the next time I am in town. It was a pleasure.

  • Our stay in the Alberta Arts apartment of Ben and Becky Straub was excellent. I particularly recommend this apartment for those with children because there is a good selection of children's games...my son really enjoyed discovering Ninja v. Ninja! The king-sized bed was very comfortable.

  • My husband and I had a great time staying at Ben and Becky Straub's place. The apartment is spacious and well stocked with everything we needed. The hosts had a lovely aesthetic sensibility when they decorated this place, i.e., totally in sync with our taste, so we felt quite at home. We had a great time walking to the Alberta Arts district including the Kennedy School and local restaurants. There was even a craft store with daily classes nearby and I enjoyed taking advantage of that. On top of all of that, the public transit was less than a block away! We loved that.

  • Fantastic place with great attention to detail - our kids loved all little extras and it was an incredibly easy bike ride to everywhere we wanted to go.

  • My sister and I enjoyed our stay at Becky and Ben's for 3 nights. The apartment was in a great location, about a 10min drive to everywhere we wanted to go. It was very clean and spacious. They provided some fruit, juice, bagels, coffee and tea for breakfast, which was really great. We loved the king bed too, very comfortable to sleep in.

  • We really enjoyed our stay in this apartment. First of all, Becky was an amazing host. She was incredibly responsive, usually responding within minutes of any email. The apartment is the lower part of a house, with a separate entrance. It's a good size, certainly much larger than any hotel room you'll find. We were traveling with our two kids and wanted to be in a neighborhood rather than downtown Portland, and we wanted the extra space. We could not have found a better spot: close to a park and playground, walking distance to great restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, etc., and right on a 'bike way' which enabled us to bike around much of the northeast district with ease.

The house was well furnished with lots of little extras. The kitchen and food left for us were much appreciated. There were toys, books, games and even a Wii for the kids to use, plus free Wi-fi and easy street parking (we did take everything out of our car as city-dwellers, and we saw broken glass up the street so use caution in that regard). We were able to use the backyard to park our bikes and the kids played with toys and enjoyed the yard as well. Overall we had a great experience and would return to stay here again!

  • Absolutely beautiful, and comfortable apartment. I found the apartment to be very convenient and it was easy to get to highways as well as all of the hot spots in Portland. Also, not one thing is missing from the apartment - they've thought of everything (hand lotion, extra razors, breakfast foods, etc.) GREAT hosts!!
