The San Benedetto Houses are located just minutes from the historical centre, in a panoramic position along the rocky west hill overlooking the vibrant city of Modica.
The three one bedroom houses are now superbly updated and refurbished following the ancient traditional building techniques with many original features. Each studio (sleeps 2-3) with separate entrance and parking, is full furnished with bathroom with shower, kitchenette, complementary LCD TV / SAT, WI-FI, air conditioner, towels, luxurious bed linen. The furniture in “Arte Povera” and floors made by local stone (the white stone from Comiso and the black one from Ragusa), the handcraft ceramics, the typical Sicilian objects, all speaks about Sicilian tradition, history, culture and love for simple life of old times.
The houses are surrounded by a "beam", a typical cobbled courtyard, furnished with chairs and tables and all the facilities for breakfast and everything you need for a truly restful and relaxing vacation.
Wild and uncontaminated nature, the major archaeological sites, fantastic sandy beaches just a few miles away are all good reasons to visit Modica and the Province of Ragusa.
Modica, pearl of Sicilian baroque along with Scicli and Ragusa Ibla, was declared World Heritage by UNESCO and is the handy place from which to explore the all meridional Baroque Valley.
The area has been also protagonist of the fortunate television series of novels and stories “The Commissioner Montalbano” shot in the cities of Modica, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla and the seaside resorts of Punta Secca, Donnalucata, Pisciotto, Marina di Ragusa.
Casa Maru was our first airbnb experience and we were completely blown away! Fabulous in every way. What a welcome from Rosa & Mara so excited to show us around & to offer us the glass of Proseco! We were lucky enough to stay here by ourselves and so had the full use of the wonderful outdoor facilities where we were able to completely relax and unwind with a stunning view down and over the valley to the old part of Modica. Casa Maru was spotless and spacious and provided everything you would need for a self catering holiday (no kettle was the only fault). The fridge had been filled with a few tasty things to start us off on our first breakfasts. The attention to detail with the décor is charming and fits in perfectly with the environment. The plot where the 3 houses are has a great area out the back to rock climb and explore - we even discovered an old grape vine bursting with ripe fruit, a lime tree on the patio & olives ripening on their trees. All very romantic. We felt, for us, that it would be best to have other people you know in the other houses as it is quite intimate.
Modica itself is put down as the lesser town to Ragusa but they are both well worth a visit - make sure you climb those steps to justify the continual eating of Panini's, pizza, gelati and more gelati all washed down with excellent coffee &/or delicious Sicilian wines!
We headed down to the s.e. coastline to the small fishing villages recommended in the guidebooks but despite taking on board that it was out of season and they looked somewhat forlorn, we far preferred the small, scenic villages inland where you can happily lose yourselves for a few hours.
Final tip: hire a small car!

Very friendly hosts, who gave us a warm welcome (of course with the famous sparkling wine). The appartment is clean and fully equipped (especially in the kitchen you will find everything you need). This apparment is surrounded with a big garden, where you can sit, relax and even barbecue. We would definitely stay there again.
Rosa Anna is the perfect hostess. Always ready to accommodate. Casa Maru' is a wonderful small house with an exceptional setting. I highly recommend it.
